Subaruman5
Hi all, I firstly posted on bbs.scoobynet.com, but many suggested this site since it may have more information on the Edinburgh area. I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I am planning on living in Scotland temporarily for a couple years. My girlfriend will be attending the Stevenson college. I am just wondering if anyone would be able to help in situating for an affordable, safe flat and anything that I should be aware of in the area. I hear that flats are around £500. And areas I should stay away from are: Pilton, Niddrie, and Wester Hailes. Please feel free to reply if you have a suggestion on places you know of someone renting a flat or a car that is around £1,000-2,000. I have a few questions if anyone would kindly be able to answer them please. Which are the areas to stay away from in Edinburgh? Which areas would you recommend renting a flat/apartment? What is the best place to buy a used car or even a Subaru? Is anyone selling theirs or anything smaller and affordable? Are there Subaru meet organizations often? I probably have more questions, but these are good for now. I will introduce myself. I currently live in Washington State USA, but have the opportunity to work overseas including Greece, Australia and Italy as a helicopter maintenance technician. This is the only reason I am able to travel like this. My girlfriend will be attending Stevenson more than likely for the next couple years. I have organized Subaru events in the past in the States, but never made it over the beauty of some of your Subaru's you have. I also am interested in the Toyota Corolla AE86s. I'm aware you have the Corolla Levin's, which are just as cool. I attended Rally Finland this year and it was pretty breath taking to watch. I would like to make it to the Wales rally at one point too. I'll post a few pictures, but any information would help. Thanks again, Bryan & Maja Local Subaru Meet - Vancouver, B.C. Phil MC
Hi Bryan, Welcome to the SIDC Scottish section, it's good to see you made your way over here from Snet . I see Cathy (Midnight21) has already offered to help you seek appropriate accommodation . www.pistonheads.com and www.autotrader.co.uk are sites with loads of cars for sale, but it's maybe worth holding out for a well looked after model from a fellow member of SIDC or Snet? Good luck with your house/car hunting, and hopefully see you at a meet soon. Phil P.S. I know it probably isn't, but the 2nd picture of you guys at Rally Finland looks sooooooo Photoshopped Lol Edited October 10, 2009 by Phil MC Link to comment

mystery machine
Hi there - and welcome to the country! Edinburgh can be an expensive place to live, but on the upside it is a largely nice-looking, clean and tidy town. Edinburgh folks IMHO aren't necessarily always the cheeriest people in Scotland... but then there are always exceptions to that rule! (e.g. the guys on this forum ). In any case, it's undoubtedly a very interesting and cosmopolitan city with plenty to see and do all year around - I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Some of the Edinburgh locals (e.g. Midnight21) will be able to advise on accommodation, etc. Scotland's generally a very good place to be a Scooby/driving enthusiast, although the big downside is the high fuel cost (currently around $6.70 for a US gallon of super unleaded!). However, you don't have to go far from Edinburgh to find some great twisty roads (the Borders region, in particular). The Highlands also has plenty of great driving roads to offer if you don't mind a bit of a trek getting there. All the best! Edited October 11, 2009 by Mystery Machine Link to comment
wrxcook
Hi i never noticed how old the post was, but i live just outside edinburgh, and know the area where stevenstons is, if i were you i would look into getting a flat or maybe even a house in either Broxburn, Uphall, West Calder, Uphall station, or Currie these are all nice surrounding villages a much nicer place to stay than the ones you mentioned and you should find somthing for £500 hope this helps Link to comment
Subaruman5
We have decided that a 1 Bedroom Flat for around 380-450 will work out pretty well. Something small since it is better in heat efficiency, outside parking, windows are energy efficient and most importantly a decent and safe neighbourhood. We were able to come up with a few. Have you heard anything negative about these areas? Fauldburn , East Craigs, Lindsay Road, Newhaven Wardlaw Terrace, Gorgie Another choice is a Double Bedroom flat. We were thinking something around the same price or a little cheaper than the 1 bedroom flat. If you happen to know any of your friends that you trust that are looking to fill in a double Bedroom for a couple, that would be great. Awesome. Cheers, Bryan Link to comment

Subaruman5
Hi mate firstly welcome to the madhouse Wester Hailes, Niddrie, Craigmiller, Granton, Muirhouse, The Inch and Pilton are proberbly not the best places to live am talking from experience of working in some of these places Have you thought about living on the outskirts of edinburgh or surrounding areas as rental is a bit cheaper and plenty of trains and buses into the city centre PS nice pics Gordy Outskirts of Edinburgh is an option too. Do you have any names off the top of your head that you can think of? Thanks for your opinion on those areas you stated too. P.S. Thanks on the photos Link to comment
jimmy_AyrshireScoobs
welcome to scotland mate, its a brilliant place and very subaru friendly.like every city centre the flats tend to be on the dear side so i would reccomend the outskirts. some nice pics you've got there Link to comment
