Losing Faith

fitted new head gasket 6 weeks ago, been running perfect since until last night. took it out for a gid run and it started knocking/tapping. think (hoping) its coming from the head (pass side). now going to have to pull the engine out again and strip it to find out whats wrong.

starting to lose faith in the old scoob now!!!! not sure weather to fix and keep it or fix it and sell it and go to the dark side!!

only mods done are turbo back decat exhaust, filter and a fuel pump. not had a remap yet (credit crunch n all can't really afford it) could this have damaged the engine in some way??

I've heard fitting new head gaskets on a "tired" engine can lead to bottom end failure due to the better compression(although it might be engine builders trying to get more money haha),might just be the gasket gone again.did you have the head checked to see if it had warped? as I've had a couple of failures within a few days due to not getting the head(s) checked so always get this done now.i had an m3 which started tapping and knocking, told it would be the bottom end and when stripped, turned out to be a head gasket failure.cheers bryan

Have you ckecked the engine for compression!? If your going to strip the heads, go over them with a fine tooth comb to make sure nothing is cracked.

As far as re-mapping goes, I doubt the modifications you've done would affect the engine.

You can check the cylinder head is perfectly flat with a straight edge be it a metre rule but look along the edge to make sure its perfectly straight .Then go cornner to corner then along the middle either check by eye or with feeler gauge for gapes .Then its machine shop for skiming and valves lapped in if the heads badly warped

before taking the engine out check your cam shafts are not tight as this can be a cause of a knockin/ ticking if they are tight you can take them off in place and clean up the caps. Make sure u don't over tighten them think they only go to around 8Nm or so .

I had the heads pressure tested and skimmed at border engines in Berwick when i did the head gasket so they "should" be fine.

no not checked the engine for compression yet but was planning on doing that before pulling the engine out.

cheers

lifted the engine out yesterday and stripped it.

a tappet shim had jumped out of place and was hitting off the spring retainer!

subaru parts are shut today so can't get any bits! :)

only good point is it's nothing a major, so decided to keep the car.

got stainless steel headers sitting in the garage so going to fit them when i put it back together and speak to mr forrest about a new ecu and remap!
