Mike M Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Craig contacted me to detail his STI wagon, so I decided to take a wee trip down to Cumbernauld and spend a day off detailing!! As always I'll keep words to a minimum and piccies to a maximum, there'll be a detailed thread on scoobynet in a couple of weeks. Before The car was firstly snowfoamed with a mixture of Megs Hyperwash and Shampoo plus This was then rinsed off and the car was washed, clayed dried and tardis'd before being atped up and any defects inspected. It was at this stage that Craig went through all the areas he had wet sanded before my arrival that had to be fully machoine polished, I'd brought my G220, but happily I'd also packed my big rotary, cause I was gonna need it!!! then we checked the swirls - and the wet sanded areas, especially the bonnet and bumper which would need the most work -
micra_wrc Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 looking good surprised Craig's wagon needed detailing - it always looks immaculate mine on the other hand
Mike M Posted October 19, 2008 Author Posted October 19, 2008 once all prepped, Craig then asked, is that a rain cloud?? So after a couple of false starts, we managed to give the car a full machine polish and finish using blackfire produst that make the car look good as new and Craig seems happy with the finish. Sorry for using 2 posts, but there were too many photo's Hope you enjoy Mike
RS Grant Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Lovely simple looking wagon, Black Classics really are my favorite. Great results. Cheers, Grant p.s: those headlight protectors look great.
mystery machine Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 You're a dedicated man, Mike Just out of curiosity, when did 'valeting' become 'detailing'? I always thought of 'detailing' as a very American term, as in "you shot the motherf****r, so how come I'm on brain detail?"
RS Grant Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 As far as I understand it: Valeting: Sponge bath for the outside, wheels cleaned etc and then on the inside a quick buzz with a hoover, glass and dash wiped down. Time taken 30-40mins. Detailing: Correction of paint defects, rebuilding layers of protection and cleaning things to make them look as good as they possibly can.. using various different methods and tools for the job. Time taken 3-4hrs+. Cheers, Grant
marky.t.s Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 superb job Mike,Craigs wagon looks minted,if i knew you were in town i would have popped down for a nosey......instead i got cold and wet at knockhill.
wulsey Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 looks like a good job well done! I use the blackfire stuff on my black VW Golf & i like the wet look the polish leaves behind!
seafar99 Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 (edited) Detailing: Correction of paint defects, rebuilding layers of protection and cleaning things to make them look as good as they possibly can.. using various different methods and tools for the job. Time taken 3-4hrs+. Grant, This was a marathon, 8am start............6PM Finish......10 hours with about 1 hour loss due to rain/lunch break. When Mike told me it took 2 hours just to pack his car ! I then had some sort of idea what the car was in for. An education would be an under-statement, with what went on, i'm still bamboozled with what products and in what process went on . I thought as many have mentioned that the old girl was quite clean but had quite a few problem areas. Like a man possessed the guauntlet was thrown down , the challenge was on! Dedication, enthusiasum and commitment......over and over...........and let's go over it again!.......10 frigging hours of it! Outside and inside (which now smells edable...marzipan) because someone cares about his workmanship! A rare commodity these days, something i can / would take my hat off to, if i wore one! Chuffed isn't the word....Amazed. Craig. Edited October 23, 2008 by seafar99

Mike M Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 Thanks for the comments guys and Craig, as always, you're welcome and again, say thanks to Evelyn for the soup!! I only do the details for fun ( I think that's what it is??), but as my wife is pregnant, I don't think I'll be doing any more for a while as everyone has been warning me that my life as I know it will be over soon!!!
C_WRX Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Nice work as usual Mike. Your end finish is cracking every time !! Main thing is the owners are pleased with your work every time.
Mike M Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 Thanks, yeah, I always find if you try your best (especially with the owner helping out when they can) it really makes a difference. I think if I went out thinking I can't be bothered, I wouldn't do it as it'll show in the finish!! Nice work as usual Mike. Your end finish is cracking every time !! Main thing is the owners are pleased with your work every time.
sparky_sj04 Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 That looks absolutely brilliant.. Pity you're not doing anymore, because i'd definitely want you to do mine next time i get back from work!!
colzo Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Great work as usual Mike. Didn't know you had a rotary as well as the G220, now thats a skill. As said valeting is completely different to detailing and when you are detailing someone else's car as a 'hobby' you need the same dedication as you would for your own pride and joy. Your car looks mint Craig. The marzipan smell is great (I use the same product as Mike) although it always makes me feel hungry!
Mike M Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 Again, thanks for all the positive comments, sorry I can't do any more details (apart from ones already promised) but who knows what next year may bring, I may actually be allowed out!!!!
frank c Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Stunning results Mike.. a cracking job, well done Craig..you must be well chuffed mate
colin_ross Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Amazing results Mike - again. Everyone who see's my car now asks who did it. I just tell them, all my own work Craig, now you'll feel guilty about getting it dirty. I know I do.
