ScoobySounds Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 had to drive from Edinburgh to a place called wanlockhead this morning for a meeting and discovered my new favourite road! in between abington and wanlockhead its only a stretch of about 4 miles, but you can see clearly around every twist for oncoming traffic so you can just keep it in 4th and go- had an blast! I bet collectively we know loads of these types of roads, so any of your favourites spring to mind? On a sadder note, this road pushed me into the very unfortunate decision to cancel my mcrae gathering trip  I just can't afford the fuel!! Its gonna be about 250 quids of fuel and thats a lot of whiteline-love.. There's SO much I want to do to the car and finances are just too critical at the moment. My respects to the great man will have to be done from home, in a turmoil of jelousy of all you guys. ..and as if to rub it in, my sticker had arrived when I got home!
micra_wrc Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Glad you're out and enjoying the scoob again. but where do you get "250 quids of fuel" from?! you've never driven off boost at 60mph have you?? its going to be 3 full tanks tops, possibly even less. the mods can wait, the Gathering is a once-off event. plus with all the attention its got and the stuff we've got planned you'll be even more gutted when you see the pictures and writeups post-event - its going to be a huuuuge weekend we're going to be breaking records babe.

LOL haha, no I haven't, certainly not for a whole tank! I was working on the basis its a 700mile round trip and I get 200 miles to a tank (70 quids a tank) its going to be 3 full tanks tops, possibly even less.the mods can wait, the Gathering is a once-off event. plus with all the attention its got and the stuff we've got planned you'll be even more gutted when you see the pictures and writeups post-event - its going to be a huuuuge weekend we're going to be breaking records babe. owww I know I'm awestruck at what you have organised here Imy, really - its incredible, and i'd love to be a part of it - I was gonna bring my sister down as she loves scoobys, but she cancelled so I'd have noone to split the cost with. my two mortgages, two cars, and freelance wages all feel a wee bit wee bit stretched. whip-round for the poor? lol. Chris.
dan_jess Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 I know the road you mean mate, its brilliant. Just need to watch out for Kamikaze sheep tho
martin_allen Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Money is the same reason i can't make it though. Even 3 tanks is £180 and with accomodation and food it just isn't possible right now. To say i'm gutted is an understatment but needs must so will just have to swallow it. 5t.

I know the road well - it is a magic wee stretch of road, I discovered it when I was out and about over the Summer (just after I got my whiteline goodies fitted )
Richie Cross Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 (edited) Great road. Being from Dumfries originally me and a mate have been up there....on our push bikes! It's quite a slog from the main road all the way up to Wanlockhead and then continue up to the weather station golf ball thing. Great coming down!!! As for the Gathering....like Imy said, it's a one off. My hotel room etc will just go on the credit card. With Mrs Richie being on maternity leave, money isn't the greatest but I've just got to go!!! I know the road you mean mate, its brilliant. Just need to watch out for Kamikaze sheep tho true that Dan, true that. they were very well behaved today though!

terzo neil Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 3 tanks of fuel.................. i can manage to go to banbury from glasgow in 3/4 tank as done it on way to france
andy Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 When we did the recce in my 07 WRX, I fuelled up in Lanark before I met Grant and Imy to make sure I had a full tank. We did the recce as close as possible to the "real thing" i.e. We left Lanark Market at 10am, stopped at Charnock Richards for an hour and drove at between 60 and 70 all the way down - assume an average of 60-62mph. The journey was 320 miles and I still had a 1/4 tank left when we arrived at Prodrive, Banbury. Okay, coming back was an entirely different story as we were no longer in "simulation mode" but the point is it needn't be expensive. You could do the whole thing on less than two tanks if you took it easy. Personally, I'm doing here to Lanark, Lanark to Banbury, Banbury to Warwick, Warwick to a nice hotel somewhere in Buckinghamshire, Bucks to Cambridge and Cambridge to home in Fife. Fecking long weekend, but would not miss it for the world
scouk Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 (edited) As for the Gathering....like Imy said, it's a one off. My hotel room etc will just go on the credit card. With Mrs Richie being on maternity leave, money isn't the greatest but I've just got to go!!! Agreed... Total waste of money doing this gathering (from a financial point of view)..... But...the cost of fuel coudl rise to over £2/litre next week and I wouldn't care I'd still do it... Credit card is already filled up after buying new tyres and various other bits last month.. and it's gonna be full again after this... (Not good) but I don't care about that.. This is something that has to be done.. This sort of event will NEVER happen again!!! This is purely a one off! And I'll be damned if I'm missing it! Especially after the effort you guys have put into it BTW - Motorway driving at 60-mph is probably the most economical way to drive the impreza! Last year I drove down to Southampton from Elgin some 600+mile trip , admittedly probably a little more than 60mph, and used just over 1 and a half tanks of fuel! Ok my car seems more economical than most at 270miles a tank on the daily commutes, but even still! Edited August 21, 2008 by ScoUK
st3ph3n Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 It is possible to stretch it. I got down to Lancaster from Larkhall in well under half a tank. But then I've covered that same route and needed a top up..... was mildly spirited.
iain01 Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 had to drive from Edinburgh to a place called wanlockhead this morning for a meeting and discovered my new favourite road! in between abington a My favourite road too, very fast, drove it a few times, head of the m74 just to have a wee shot on it. You could do part of the journey, rather than the full trip and still be part of it

You could do the whole thing on less than two tanks if you took it easy. haa, yeah - i'd expect I too should find it difficult to keep under two tanks! For the journey back I was even considering using 95ron so that i'd HAVE to stay off boost! of course, this is a ridiculous thing to think. ...the cost of fuel coudl rise to over £2/litre next week and I wouldn't care I'd still do it... Credit card is already filled up after buying new tyres and various other bits last month.. and it's gonna be full again after this... (Not good) but I don't care about that.. £2 !?*!# is that true!? It is possible to stretch it. I got down to Lancaster from Larkhall in well under half a tank. But then I've covered that same route and needed a top up..... was mildly spirited. thats 145 miles nice going and encouraging.. how thirsty is your scoob usually? My favourite road too, very fast, drove it a few times, head of the m74 just to have a wee shot on it. this bit wasn't that fast though more like hold-on-to-something twisty ninja driving
ScoobySounds Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 You could do part of the journey, rather than the full trip and still be part of it and not be a double guiness world record holder two times over, in two records!
scouk Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 £2 !?*!# is that true!? Lol! no don't panic (not unless Mr Brown reads this and get's ideas)... I was saying it "could" and I wouldnt care but there's no indication that it will.. Infact last I heard the price of oil dropped 40% this month...
iain01 Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 and not be a double guiness world record holder two times over, in two records! sorry thats went over my head
ScoobySounds Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 (edited) sorry thats went over my head two world records will be broken and i would love to be a part of that! then we'll all be double world record holders (edit: ie i'd have to do all the jouney to warwick i was just bein silly!)
