Any Special Tools Required For A Pad Change On A Wrx?

Going to be doing this hopefully today or tomorrow if my pads arrive. Any special or weird tools required for it. Will be doing it at my mates garage which is well stocked but just thought I'd have a quick check.

Cheers

Fronts and backs Stephen? I've got 2 pots rears but believe you may have the singles? If so you may require a wind back tool, any decent garage should have one or you could always borrow mine.

just did mine a few days ago along with new discs, all i needed was an alan key to remove the caliper from the disc, this was APs though dunno if your is different

you dont req a wind back tool ,just push back with a screwdriver. you only req widd back tool for calipers with self adjusting hand brakes ie mondeo golf renanlt etc geo

yup canter, done the disc and pads all round myself. i would however recommend having a G clamp handy. i broke two trying to get two of the pistons back. was at it ages. sticky caliper though i think

Cheers chaps. 2005 WRX is 2 pot rears so sounds like everything should be alright.

They never arrived today though so fingers crossed for tomorrow. So this evening's entertainment instead consisted of the reinstallation of a diff into a westfield. Great fun!

I think the only thing I'll need to pickup then is some copper slip as my mate has run out he thinks.

EBC Reds again John. Can't complain about them at all and this will be my 3rd or 4th set (on the front anyway). I know a few people don't like them and some people used to go through them more often than hot dinners back but I guess they suit my driving style. I've got 18K+ out of this last set but with only 1 trackday mind you.

Cool. I am currently trying the PFs. Only managed half track day with them but they seemed fine. Good luck with the change, I'm sure it will be cool.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow as then I can go up to my mates and we'll get them done. Otherwise I'll do it myself this weekend.

I'm planning my slowing down carefuly as they've got pretty bad quite quickly there!

Red Stuffs went from New to Metal on me in 2 hours at KH. I currently have them on the 2dr, but only because the Brembo's came with them, don't like them, nasty 'oribble Pad !!

Well complete nightmare this evening. Made it up to Paul's and we were both brimming with confidence that changing brake pads after doing the differential last night would be a complete walk in the park. Started on the front driver side caliper and after an hour and 20 minutes we gave up as the pins just wouldn't come out with none of the other calipers even attempted. Phoned Spooks halfway through to seek his professional advice, then phoned Paul's dad (ex-helicopter engineer) and the advice was the same - WD40 and just hit it. Never worked though.

So going to book it in and get someone professional to do it.

I feel rather defeated.

lol you defeatist stephen!! i had the same carry on then had to chisel every bloody screw off to remove the bell from the disc, took 8 hours to do both wheels, then spent alot of the next day stripping everything down again cause the calipers were rubbing against the discs!

Well I had a 15 miles drive back home and wouldn't be able to have another bash at them until Monday or Tuesday evening anyway, so didn't fancy a half finished job on my daily driver.

I had no spare pins either if I had broken something.

i wouldnt recommend pushing back pistons with a screwdriver, one slip and you will cut the dust seal. i use a tool like this

http://www.justoffbase.co.uk/Disc-Brake-Pi...ol-Sealey-AK711

you will need a brake bleeding tube as well as its not recommended forcing bake fluid back through the abs system. far better to loosen nipple then push pistons back. also gives you the chance to renew fluid which is hyproscopic.

regards pins not comming out im unsure of that type of caliper but there may be little pins holding the bigger pins in iyswim

The retaining pin had been removed so the pins were "free" to come out. However despite coaxing with a hammer or 3, some WD40 and what not, they weren't doing feck all.

Phoned Hypertech this morning so they're going to order me some pins and sort it out next week. I guess if the pins are stuck you just cut them?

surprised they arent comming out with a hammer, i take it your using a roll punch between hammer and the pins or something similar.

since they are the four pot fronts i would try splitting the caliper and see if that makes it easier to get them out, perhaps the pins are bent somehow. look out for the two little o rings if you do decide to split the caliper.

I need discs and pads and wondered if you can get Ferrodos for the WRX? I had them in the FTO after many years of Red Stuff/Pagid/Green Stuff and they were a different class. I used 3G disks which are Brembo casts iirc.

What do people recommend for a daily driver that are a bit uprated from standard? Prob just get Hypertech to do it all in one go as I know I'll end up with the same problems as Stephen did lol - I get easily defeated too! :)

Yes, you can get the Ferrodo pads for the WRX. I used them for daily driving and the track and they were good. Nice to meet you today!

The Trendy One :)
