Decatting Up-pipe - Advice Required...

Recommended Posts

Right... My up-pipe has a decent sized leak in it which needs sorted with an MOT due next month. Good excuse for a de-cat methinks

Couple questions.

1) Where's the best place to get one from that's manufactured to a decent quality that it will fit properly? Heard dodgy stories of eBay ones not fitting properly. Oh and needs to be decently priced

2) What's the story with this heat wrap stuff? Is it worth it over refitting heatsheilds? If so where would I get some for the up-pipe? I understand it's a case of soaking the stuff in water first them wrapping it tightly round the pipe and holding it one with clips of somesort?

3) Anyone got a quick step by step guide on how to replace the up-pipe? I know my way aroudn the car, pretty well but a guide from someone who's done it before would be handy

Thanks,

Al

1. intercooler off

2. turbo heat shield off

3. downpipe off

4. remove five nuts holding up pipe on to brackets and turbo

5. remove stupid plastic undertray if still fitted

6. remove sensor on newage uppipe

7. remove two bolts holding up pipe to headers

8. remove nut on left hand engine mount

9. jack engine a wee bit to give a few extra mm clearence.

10. possibly remove left hand side of headers to give more room.

reinstall with new up pipe and resistor shoved in sensor plug.

LOL! YOu make it sound so easy!

The bolts surrounding the turbo area are usualyl my problem... Trying to loosen bolts which have been superheated by turbos aint fun....

Thanks for the guide though! that helps!

the best places i found were flat4online for the uppipe and scoobyparts.com for the heatwrap al- saw some cheaper on ebay but howdya now it its properly heat proof!

Pretty much got a up-pipe sourced thanks to euan

Heatwrap from scoobyparts out of stock! arrgh!!

Roughly how much would be needed to wrap the up-pipe? Probably not much as it's a short pipe... Also any advantages to wrapping the center pipe? (where the 3rd cat usually sits) De-catted that one last year but left the heatsheild off...

Thanks,

Am I missing something? Didn't you say your MOT is due and your going to replace your dodgy DP with a decat? How will ever pass if you do that?

No, I don't think there is any point in that. Wrapping the downpipe is done to prevent the heat from the pipe getting into the engine bay and raising running temperatures. The third pipe is under the car and is therefore far enough away from the engine bay so that temps are not affected.

It's the Up-pipe I'm replacing.. THe Downpipe will still ahve the "full fat" OEM cat in it... Unless I've been mis-lead, the cat in the downpipe should be enough for the MOT? otherwise I'll be sticking the 3rd cat back on for the test

Last year I had a small leak in the exhaist and the emissions test failed on 1st attempt as a result.. The garage kindly gunked up the leak and it passed on 2nd attempt, so wanna make sure no leaks this time.. And If I can get more oomph at the end as a result all the better

Fair enough... that makes sense... thanks!

Ah yes! Silly me. Yeah, decat the up pipe, it should be fine for MOT with the main cat in the DP. Not that I can speak from experince, but going by what I have read and been told. Presently, I only have the sports cat and that's it, but I have been assured that this will be good enough for the MOT, so you should be fine.

Also, will your car be ok to run with a decatted uppie without a remap?

Taking it cannae yes it will be ok... But I can make the required map adjustments myself via laptop :rotfl:. Main problem will probably be overboost as more air will be hitting the turbo so will have to open up the wastegate a bit to keep it under control.. but will still require some logging and tweaking ASAP once installed... :rotfl:

WoooT! and just noticed a new version of the rom editing software (RomRaider)that will finally let me test the dual-map option properly which as some of you know is an option already available though an ECU-Tek remap!

Can't wait to try this lot out!! Assuming I don't break anything in the process.... :rotfl:

Yeah.. STi's only come with 1 cat in the downpipe.. rest is decatted. Only recently found out that the up-pipe on classics is the same pipe they use in the newage STi's...

Strangely it appears there is a weak spot in the WRX catted up-pipes as my one seem to have burst in the same way ScoobyDoom's up-pipe went last year, both Bugeye WRX's. Welding near the lower flange... But I'll be able to identify the exact problem once I get it out... I just know it's leaking from that area...

thought i would let you know when de catting the up pipe the wrx oem up pipe has a sensor for egt or something when fitting your new upipe, you can take it out or fit it but as the gas will be hotter or because the is no cat there the ecu will put on a cell there is an quick and very easy fix for it or it could poss be taken off via ecutek,

Yep.. thanks.... I should be able to disable the CEL alart on the map (Had to do that when I removed the 3rd cat).. If not I have resistors standing by :)

Well, heat wrap ordered, up-pipe hopfully getting picked up this week. Just need some decent weather this weekend and then some tweaking on sunday :rotfl:

. o O (It never goes that easily for me... ;) )
