bono270269 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Im looking at buying a new panel air filter. Anyone recommend any? Initially, I was thinking of an induction kit, but I have read that on New Ages you are just as well to put a panel filter in as the box is just as good for up to 400bhp. I have decided to buy a panel filter because of this and would appreciate any advice. So far, I have picked up from reading forums that the preferred ones for most scoobie owners was the Green Filter. Is this true? I have also read that K & N is the best, but the same amount of people say that the K & N is oiled so it will mess up the MAF. Does the K & N come pre-oiled or is it dry? I also read that the filter should be 'Group N'. So far, my eyes are on Green, K&N, Pipercross and Samco. Does anyone have any experiences? I would like the car to have a grunt if possible but accept that the box will probably prevent this. (I am not willing to drill holes in the box). Any feedback would be much appreciated.
leebo77 Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Had a Green Panel Filter on my WRX and it was very good. Noticed better spool-up and could hear the turbo more.
gus the bus Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) Used the Simota panel filter in my last 5 scoobs. says it all really and recommended it to a good few folk on here Edited April 4, 2008 by Gus the Bus

bono270269 Posted April 4, 2008 Author Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) Do you get any deeper grunt with the Simota? Is it a dry filter? Any performance gains? Edited April 4, 2008 by bono270269
stubaroo Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) Do you get any deeper grunt with the Simota? Is it a dry filter? Car was fitted with a Pipercross panel filter when I bought it at the end of last year (MY04 WRX). Had Gus have a look at it and he reconned it was goosed (it did look very grubby) and he recommended the Simota filter. The filter comes lightly oiled ready to fit straight in to the air filter box. As far as a deeper grunt I'm not too sure, as I said it already had a Pipercross fitted and I'm fairly new to the Scooby scene. Performance probably the same. Edited April 4, 2008 by Stubaroo
gus the bus Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) Do you get any deeper grunt with the Simota? Is it a dry filter? Any performance gains? yip, gives a decent noise (can hear the RC dumpvalve) through it. Comes pre-oiled but correctly done to avoid MAF issues and finally would give minor performance gains (as all cotton filter do) Gus Oh aye and if anyone else wants one I can now get them for £26 thru a friend in the motor trade Edited April 4, 2008 by Gus the Bus
frank c Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I opted for a K&N panel filter..Tried and tested and been around for ages
nkwrx Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I opted for a K&N panel filter..Tried and tested and been around for ages Agree too. Got one in my Hawkeye
shane Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I bought a K&N last week for my Newage. Not fitted it yet
gus the bus Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 I've used K&N in a variety of cars over the years without problem too. But the Simota was recommended to me and as i say have used them in the last five cars with good results. and at roughly £15 a time cheaper for the same result
P4UL WRX Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 another good one to look at is the ITG panel filter. I don't think they do a specific one for the car but if you phone them and give sizes they will sort you out. I used a K & N panel filter in mine untill i changed to a K & N Typhoon and it worked perfect. I am sure it is still in my garage somewhere or did i fit it to the washing machine for a quicker rinse
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 K&N panel for me too.................never had any grief with them and use the reconditioning kit every 10k ( very light oiling)
buffalo Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 was always told to stay away from the k & n as it was oiled and opted for the dry green. doubt you'll see or hear a difference with the filter however its a must when combined with other mods
thefastone Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 I've heard a lot of people say that the Green Filters are the way ahead... no one seems to be mentioning them now...
speech Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 And on that note Dale..... It's a Green filter I have on mine, not had any problems with it and would happily reccomend it to anyone.
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 The MAF on the older classics were not oil friendly but from what I gather the new age models can take a lightly oiled filter no problemo at all CGS
euan_r Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 replaced mine last week with standard genuine item. from what i have read its only v5/v6 maf that are weak so not advisable to run k+n on them. know some one whos induction system is simply inlet of turbo and they work with subarus all day have a search for some of harveys posts on this matter, hes done a wee bit of testing. havent made up my mind to remove snorkel or not yet.
frank c Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Surely the K&N is the same as the Green..as in slightly oiled ? Can't see them being any different......
thefastone Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 The K&N is oiled, and ive just had a look at the Green website, and sure enough, the maintenance bit tells you to oil them... As I was aware, all I knew was muchly what Euan says, that the 99-00 have weak MAF and the oiled filters can break them... Curious... I've only got the standard fitted to my car right enough... I was going to get round to changing it eventually mind...
martin_allen Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 I've got the simota and i don't hear any induction noise over the exhaust heh. Not noticed any DV noise either but you can hear the turbo spool up sometimes. I got it because it was cheap otherwise i don't think they actually make any difference. The standard item is meant to be good for 350bhp and without a map you probably won't get any benefit at all. In fact when i had my car mapped Andy F said not to bother as it wouldn't make any difference and advised me to spend the cash on improved intercooler hoses instead. Didn't see the need to question the man with the fastest Scooby in the UK!! 5t.
frank c Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Aye..the OE one will be fine..you'll just need to keep replace it more often.
nanaki Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 running the tsl green filter in mine and no issues with it on a my00 car. I do get a dump valve sound from it but thats because i've also got the snorkle removed from the wing to give it better cold air.
b4z Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 a just bought an hks pannel filter going 2 fit at weekend 2 get the cone filter of it
