stubaroo Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Some newbie questions: What are the benifits of changing the air filter from the standard fitted filter to the 'Green Cotton Filter' mentioned above? Also I take it that there are no adverse effects for simply changing to a better air filter? Reason for asking: I previously had a VW Bora V5 and decided to get a K+N Induction Kit fitted and all hell broke loose. I had nothing but trouble the whole time it was fitted to the car. Now, I know that an Induction kit and a panel air filter are not the same things. (I think ). I think in hind sight that when fitting an induction kit the car requires some kind of alterations to the ECU to allow for greater amounts of air coming in. Please correct me if i am wrong! Thing is I had the induction kit fitted by performance specialists "Falkland Performance" and they never advised any other procedures may be required after fitting the unit. It was well over a year later after spending loads of cash at VW for various faults that kept appearing. Car would just die when pulling up to stop and the like. Lambda probe replaced, air mass meter replaced among many other parts that i can't recall. I finally took the car to another garage and the mechanic there after looking at the history of faults said the problem lay with the Induction kit I had fitted. Smartly removed, original filter re-fitted, no more problems. God waffled on a bit there, anyhoo I ain't no mechanic and I would appreciate any advise kindly given, always keen to learn.
nanaki Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 replacing the panel filter on an impreza dosn't require a remap. fits in the airbox just like the standard filter. very common and very easy upgrade for the car. helps the airflow out without it being as big a change as an induction kit which you normally need a remap for.
gus the bus Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 I would HIGHLY recommend the Simota Performance one. Can be had for £32 and I've fitted to ALL eight of my Subaru's and to five+ others when doing services. Great product at a realistic price
martin_allen Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Didn't think an air filter made any real difference bar noise and not having to replace it? When i had the map done Andy said not to bother as the standard item is more than adequate. Note Prodrive don't alter the filters either, apparently standard airbox is good for 350bhp! So benefits: More noise Works out cheaper over 40,000 miles Downsides: Doesn't filter as well (more air also = more bits) Initial cost that's about it! If you just stick with the standard one SIDC discount will give you 10% off. I think they are about eight quid from Subaru. 5t.
ozzy Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 nowt wrong with the original paper job to be honest I've I've never noticed the difference on a standard mapped car.
