dougster Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 A silver classic must have met a stickered up blue new-age on the Loch road about lunchtime today. I was on the big gray boat thingy...
shetland_wrx Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Does that belong to the norweigan navy? im pretty sure that it stopped along lerwick to refuel a couple of weeks ago. weird looking thing! what is it?
david_taylor Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Dont know what it is, but wonder what the large grey traffic cone is meant to do!
dipsy Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Must be a destroyer of some sort .The orange and black vessel is a tug
dougster Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 HMS Daring D32. Type 45 Destroyer which was in at Glen Mallan to pick up supplies. She is on sea trials from BAE Govan. Impulse and Spaniel were the naval auxiliary vessels in attendance.
shetland_wrx Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 im pretty sure that it was in lerwick harbour 2weeks ago to refuel. big boat! bet it goes like stink to! Maybe not a good advert for its sea trials....tug following it! haha!
andy Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Doug - I thought you were trying to give up chasing sailors? []
thewelsho Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Dont know what it is, but wonder what the large grey traffic cone is meant to do!LOL!
dougster Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 She wouldn't have been in Lerwick and the tugs were there to maneuver here off the slip and back town to the Tail O the Bank. F310 Fridtjof Nansen of the Norweigan Navy might have been the one you seen? Andy, you know me.....any port in a storm................oh that's right it, it was sunny today......[][]
thewelsho Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 A silver classic must have met a stickered up blue new-age on the Loch road about lunchtime today. I was on the big gray boat thingy... I'm sure I saw this boat off on the horizon today as well, only I was in Whiting Bay, Arran.
dougster Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 Yes John, she'll be performing the trials in the marked mile area off the Cumbraes and Arran.
shetland_wrx Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 yeah thats her alright. where did ya get that picture from? what do you work as btw?
wheelchairscooby Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 sea trials what does that mean?[*-)] see if she leeks
martin_allen Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 I always think the title "destroyer" should mean a ship bristling with big guns rather than traffic cones! Looks like a big recon vessel really. Good pic though! 5t
oobster Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Daring_%28D32%29 iPod Charging points built into the thing!
dougster Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 WCS, a boat/ship is usually taken on sea trials afterlaunching. Typically these trials would occur after construction, butbefore handing over to the first owner, or following a refit or majormodification to the vessel. Such trials will establish whether theperformance of the vessel meets the contractual requirements in termsof speed and handling. HMS Daring was expected to do about 28/9knots. She's done 30knots on ONE engine so far!! fivetide that tub is a floating weapons platform!! There's a nice wee 4.5 inch Mk 8 Mod 1 naval gun for you!! []
martin_allen Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 Seen the missle stuff that's on board, just needs more pointy sharp bits! I think it was Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy... "The designer had been clearly told not to beat about the bush: 'Make it evil', he'd been told, 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for him. If it means sticking blackened bits of metal or prongs all over it, then so be it. This is not a gun for sticking in an umbrella stand, it's a gun for going out and making people miserable with'" Ra! [H]
dougster Posted August 9, 2007 Author Posted August 9, 2007 [H] Lot's of pointy bits are ready to pop out all over the place!! Just like the new F22 Raptor aircraft which stows it's deadly payload inside the body to avoid detection by radar of aforementioned 'pointy bits' [8-|][]
