thewelsho Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Can't belive this! Still sweating over the result of being scamerad and now pulled by traffic. Turn right into the main road car to my right does the same thing, we are side by side, she pulls away, I follow suit. We are pretty much side by side, and lo and behold, Mr White Cap steps onto the road and waves me down. I tried the "oh I'm taking my dad to the hospital" line which was true, but since it was a fixed appointment, he stated that it was not an emergency and does not warrant my speeding. Anyhoo, he said that since the other car was alongside me it was still possible for his device to get a pinpoint fix on mine, so that there was no mistake. He then said to my utter amazement "It wouldn't be fair to charge you for speeding and not the other driver, so I'm letting you go with a ticking off and saving you three points on your licence, we do actually have a heart you know." All that on top of getting stopped by traffic last week for spot lights and number plate... I think I'll stay at home for a long time!!! Note to Road Angel users: again, the device did not respond to the camera being trained on me.
mrbadger Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Glad to hear a story about a decent police decision for a change Worrying to hear about your Road Angel tho. So are you going to drive nice and sensibly when you get these mods?
st3ph3n Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 What Road Angel do you have John? I have the classic one which has the laser detector as an extra adaptor. I don't use it though as most laser detectors are pretty useless. The police laser is quite a narrow beam and if they did hit your road angel and you were speeding then they've already caught you. The only way it would be of any use is if the signal bounced from/through another car and yours picked it up, but the chances of that are slim to nil. Remember also that the RA, like most other devices these days is purely GPS based as the detection based stuff was outlawed.
wheelchairscooby Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 lucky man their john i have road angel to thats a close shave but they are still the best i think
craigwrx Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Time to sell up mate and get a Scooter [:|] ...Seriously, pleased to hear u got away with it [Y]
scoob fae ork Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Glad ya got off with it, Am just surprised you managed to find a police officer with a hart we could do with some o them up here
thewelsho Posted July 31, 2007 Author Posted July 31, 2007 Whereabouts were they? There were at the Gorbals, gone now. I passed them another couple of times, very gingerly. Stephen, I have the RA plus with the detection thing built in. I guess the narrow focussed beam of the cops gun was trained on another part of the car, so pretty useless I guess. On my way home a couple of hours later, while driving on eggshells I opeted out passing a bus on a two lane road, cause by the time I would have been passing I'd have been in the bend. However, this did not stop the red Focus behind me doing that very thing, so I beeped at him as he sped passed me IN the corner only to realise it was full of cops!!!!! I got the evil eye further up the road when sitting at a red light! I feel I am getting a message of sorts! Did someone say scooter? Maybe that is way to go!

martin_allen Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 either trained on another bit of the car or he was basically giving you flannel and didn't have you at all. The other car would have messed up his readings and people have got off with that in court before. How far away was he? the beam spreads pretty fast so they are only actually meant to use it at close range (although often don't) sounds like your lucky day though, get some lottery numbers on! 5t.
boris b Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 I'm radar gun trained and have been told that we can only train it on a vehicle that it travelling on it's own... You would have got off with it if he had fixed you..All to do with the probability that the beam can be deflected off the other car or road furniture at the locus. Unless they have moved the goalposts in the past year.....[^o)]

Unless they have moved the goalposts in the past year.....[^o)] Well that sounds pretty true to what the officer said, though he didn't give me as much info as that. He just said that he could pinpoint me with his device regardless of the other car's presence. Maybe he was just giving me a bit of flannel so that I'd not think of that excuse should I get caught again. The officer was really nice though and smiled when he said "we have a heart". Anyway, I got lucky, I just hope I am two times lucky with the scamera incident. What is "road furniture locus"?
thewelsho Posted July 31, 2007 Author Posted July 31, 2007 How far away was he? the beam spreads pretty fast so they are only actually meant to use it at close range (although often don't) Hmmm, 250 metres or there abouts.
scouk Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 All that on top of getting stopped by traffic last week for spot lights and number plate... I think I'll stay at home for a long time!!! Spot/Fog lights is pretyt common these days. More and more drivers have them on all the time not just chavs and police dont seem to like it. Just as a matter of interest what was the issue with teh number plate? Note to Road Angel users: again, the device did not respond to the camera being trained on me. I recently bought myself a Road Angel Compact but haven't really been anywhere to test it yet. Liked the idea of a digital speedo more than anything. On the detection issue I believe the government are trying to put through a law by the end of the year that makes the laser detectors illegal for use anyway. Radar detectors (older speed gun system not used much these days) have been illegal for a few years now IIRC. But all these new Road Angels with laser detectors built in will probably have their sensors disabled if you update them in the near future in order to abide by the law. Seems a bit odd as I reckon 95% of times your caught before the detector alerts you or maybe doesn't even alert you at all. Idealy need a sensor next to the number plate but again it'd only really serve to show you you've been caught rather than help you avoid detection. FYI - GPS detection will still be legal (for the time being) so fixed cameras and possible mobile locations are ok just the real-time mobile detection will probably be illegal soon. Of course the best action is just to keep your speed down . o O (Flame suit at the ready [][][][])
thewelsho Posted July 31, 2007 Author Posted July 31, 2007 Just as a matter of interest what was the issue with teh number plate? The spacing: instead of S600 XXX mines is S600X XX. The lady said that she'd trust me to change it and no fine or ticket was necessary!
scouk Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 nice one! Glad to see they trusted you to get it changed instead of just lumping you with a on the spot fine..[Y]
thewelsho Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 nice one! Glad to see they trusted you to get it changed instead of just lumping you with a on the spot fine..[Y] Yeah, I intend to change it ASAP... NOT!!!!!
tosh 32 Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 well john if you aint gonna change it for a proper size might as well get a smaller plate []
colzo Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 They say these things happen in 3s! Someone seems to be looking out for you! [A]
mrbadger Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 So are you going to drive nice and sensibly when you get these mods? I always drive sensibly! I'm sure you do drive sensibly at the moment anyway! I used to drive sensibly until I got my scoob modded. Seriously... when I got my car modded, I very quickly realised that I needed to calm down. I'm still learning to resist the urge to press the go pedal when I know I shouldn't. One day I'll be good - well either that or I'll get a ticket. Glad you only had a close shave in this instance. As someone very wise once said, " I'm going off to sniff some V-Power".
boris b Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Road furniture at the locus of the incident is classed as bus shelters, road direction signs and even large glass windowed shop fronts that can distort the radar reading as it is sent to, or returned from the offending vehicle.....Sounds like he was giving you some flannel to give you a fright. Jeeze that sounded like and official document..[] I'm not working today either... Well i am with a mate doing some fencing and slabs at my mother in laws.....[:|]Still sore from shoveling 2 tons of hardcore yesterday...Need to stop this malarky I'm 40 now fer F's sake.
Richie Cross Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Our traffic dept have new speed guns the size of hand held camcorders and are a lot more accurate than the old style. Think these ones can target the one car.
westtra Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 it may have been a radar gun instead of laser that they used hence why the RA didn't pick it up.
