  1. Im sure infact, I know there are several threads dating back to when Jesus was around, but I would like some up to date advice on what oil to put in the Interceptor.(First 900 miles)

Subaru have quoted me £100 for Shell Helix oil, filter, changed

Kiwk Fit (just thought I would ask as they are across the way), Mobil 1, £50, filter, changed

    Hyperrtek- havent heard back

    Greers- Havent spoken to them

I think I used to use motul 15w50 and or millers 10w60

    What is best?

Buy your own oil and take it to Subaru?

  2. It's because the £ is worth nothing just now.

Yes - and they have upped the spec on the cars to almost 330S spec too. Or should that be Euro import spec...

How much is a Euro STI being sold for in the UK just now?

    Brian :)

  3. Hi all,

The 2011 Impreza (hatch and saloon - same price) are now listed on the Subaru website, with spec etc.

Both START at £32,999 (£33405 with metallic paint) - Recaro's, different suspension (Spec C I believe), fog lights, Push Button start, heated door mirrors, 18's as standard, bluetooth etc as standard but NOT 330S spec ('only' 300PS/407nM as against the 330PS/470nM for Prodrive pack) - i.e. not PPP exhaust or mapping. Basically updated 330S spec without the performance enhancements.

Makes my car seem an absolute bargain!

  4. I fitted similar when I had my 03WRX - Corsa spacers and fitted really nice speaker - place in Bathgate (Audio Place - can't remember the name) fitted them, with head unit, dynamat and new cabling etc.

ABSOLUTELY essential to change the head unit if you have not already got a different one. The output of the standard Kenwood thing is just awful so can't drive the speakers. Worth getting Dynamat in the doors too to stop vibration. Valuable mod done by many.

Although if you have an outrageous exhaust, don't bother lol as I found out...

  5. I'm wanting to move my radiators expansion bottle from the righthand side of the rad and over to the left next to the power steering fluid bottle. If I move the power steering bottle around a wee bit on its mounting and then magically squeeze in the expansion bottle with a diy effort bracket. I was thinking of maybe ditching the expansion bottle for a smaller bottle. Along the lines of a large (1.5l min) thick-ish plastic sports bottle, mounted in a bicycle bottle holder or similar. Is there any size or volume sort of issues that would knock this idea on the head?

Car is a 2002 wrx wagon.

    Ryan

Not sure it's a great idea changing the size. I assume it is that size for a reason - either (a) that size of bottle is made for every car in Japan and it was cheap or (B) it needs to be that size to allow for excessive heat etc in the cooling system...

Someone with a brain will be along shortly :)

    Brian.

  6. picking mine up next weekend on my refurbished 16" wheels.

i would agree with your expert up to a point. the leggacy runs the cheapest tyres possible all year round, m+s are cheap. its had various makes heros, sportivas, ling longs lol. very rarely get stuck with it in snow, i guess five foot drifts were a bit optimistic. even managed up our farm road in a couple of feet with the space saver on due to puncture. however it runs 185/75/14 or something similar.

my old impreza never got stuck either but it also had canadian snow tyres on, again in smaller 15" size.

i had to stick with 16" to clear the four pot, guess you will have to stay with 17s to clear brembos. i did consider group n wheels to reduce size but they wear out wheel bearings more due to large offset and require centre hole to be machined.

where i would disagree with your expert is the fact that we are likely to be driving in wet weather most of the time. the full blow snow tyres on old impreza i found to be very aquaplaney in standing water.

i was after nokians but was told some of the popular winter brands such as nokian and verstadin were going to be tricky to get a hold of this year due to demand from continent, whether this is true i dont know. was steered to avon winter tyres in the end but have never tried them before so cant comment yet.

    Cheers for the replies.

If you don't mind me asking where did you get your Avon's from and how much/what type are they etc?

I also understand their thinking but essentially they are saying that my current tyres are as good as any winter tyres in the wet etc and only useless in snow/mud. I was planning more on a Winter tyre to get my summer wheels/tyres off though (in saying that we have every season every month so should maybe just run them all year!).

  7. Well the yen exchange rate doesn't seem to have had an effect on the price of a new Evo

Major drawback on the Evo for me is the lack of dealers - we are lucky in the Central belt with Ian Grieve, AF Nobles, S&S Service and even Halleys...plus John R Weir etc.

Dealer backup is essential - although ALL of my Impreza's have been the most reliable cars I have ever owned, including mainly Japanese cars.

  8. Hi all,

Going to get some winter tyres - basic advice I got from an expert was buy the blockiest proper full on M+S winter tyre, irrespective of price - ie don't pay £150 for Dunlop's - buy cheap as they tread is most important - and they'll be used in adverse conditions.

Basically don't waste money on a halfway house as, unless I am going to a skinny space-saver rim, the 17's I am putting the tyres on will still struggle.

    Thoughts?

    Brian

  9. My hatch is doing pretty well heading for it's 10k service.

No engine worries. VERY few rattles (other than parcel shelf, which is sorted).

I've owned Blob, Classic (STI V1 so no plain jane) and the Hatch - the Hatch is the best all round car hands down. It's not been built entirely from a Japanese parts bin like some others.

It has PPP, Prodrive Springs and STI Quickshift - that sharpens up a lot of the "friendliness" of the standard hatch but is still a car that I can live with every day.

It is hugely more practical than any previous Impreza, has a rear wiper, cruise control and will do 30+mpg on a long motorway journey but still deliver blistering pace when needed at the switch of a button.

The hatch is easy to tune and tighten uop if you want it - suspension, brakes and every other bit that anybody remotely interested in on any other model changes anyway.

    BUT

For the money I paid for mine, and the stuff fitted to it, it was a bargain compared to a mundane Mondeo etc which could be specced to the same price without the engineering. For a car circa £25k + new (average showroom price) it needs to be all things to all men to compete, as the Focus is, as the Golf R is (although that's VERY pricey).

I think it competes very well.

No matter what I buy next I certainly won't regret getting it and it has not let me down in any way (other than the usual thin paint issues).

My 2p/review after 9 months & 9000 miles of ownership.

    Brian
