Agreed, its a question of boost, core volume of intercooler and associated charge temps. The WRX intercooler has a reasonable core volume which enables a good flow of air and also allows sufficient cooling. The STI sized one may provide benefit during hot summer months at certain boost levels, but at the levels which you will be able to go to it will not affect you!

Aye it does fit with a strut brace, but from some of the pictures Ive seen the left hand side of the intercooler is just balancing on the frame, so its only fixed at on side and held on by the 2 hoses......
