Help regarding accident and can this be fixed ?
dave_morgan replied to VAL113R's topic in Scottish Scoobies
<< Are the valves likely to be bent ? The impact happened on the passenger side of the car, this crushed the battery and knocked the batter terminals off obviously cutting the power to the engine immediately. The chassis leg has snapped through the belt, but hopefully due to the cut in power the engine would be ok ? is there any way I can tell ? The only other concern is the drive shafts etc would this be expensive to fix ? >> The risk is that when the belt snapped, the valves stopped moving before the pistons did. The end result here obviously could be a piston-valve clash and likely valve damage. On the positive side the engine was presumably just ticking over, so at least it didn't have to drop from 6000rpm or anything too high. The other plus is that being a turbo engine, the copression ratio is slightly lower, so the gap between the pistons and valves is a bit bigger. Not sure how much difference this would make in this situation, but it might help a little. If it makes you feel any better, I had a car a while ago with the chassis leg jammed into the pulleys and the engine WAS ok ! I was very surprised, as their were teeth stripped off the belt and everything! So fingers corssed for you on that one. Not sure the best way to check though to be honest. 2 ways spring to mind depending how technical you are. 1 - Take the heads off and have a look at the valves and piston crowns for damage (you may be able to tell by looking at the top of the valves, but this wouldn't really be conclusive). 2 - Stick a new belt on it, line it up and turn it over by hand for a few revs (with the plugs out). If all sounds ok, fire it up. This risks extra damage if there is belt valves, but at this stage maybe it doesn't matter. You should probably do a compression test on it too, in case there's some minor damage to valve seats etc. You could also add an 'in-between' stage of turning it over on the starter to hear if it sounds even (ie equal compression) before trying to start up. I've not had a huge amount of experience inside the impreza engine, so you'd be best to talk to someone who has (Andy F ???) before doing any of the above, but there's a few ideas to start you off at least. You're going to need to drop the engine to get the damage repaired anyway I'd have thought, as the repairer will need access to the chassis legs by the look of things. This should make the manual inspection route a little easier at least. Final bit of advice - check out the price of a jig rental before you make any decisions. If I remember correctly it was around £500 so could add a fair bit to the cost of repair. If you've got a pile of bits already, and are prepared to put some more work in, it might be worthwhile, but is probably dependant on the roof damage. If there's a kink up there, things aren't so rosy HTH Dave p.s. I doubt drive shafts will be expensive as most breakers yards will have a pile of them available as there not common things that need replaced. Had great fun on track as always Only problem with that is you don't get a chance to socialise much as you want as much track time as poss !! Maybe I'll just come for the social next time ! Good to see a few P1s parked around though. Mine was undoubtedly the dirtiest there, but nice to see some clean ones there keeping the side up !!

Depends what power you're looking for really (and how much lag you're prepared to put up with) and what else you've had done or are planning to do to the car. I like the VF28 personally, but i've not tried many of the others to be honest. Dave

Ok, I think I've got enough to go for this one (in a 16 format). Could everyone who's put their name down who is going to Knockhill today, please bring some cash/cheques so I can pay the deposit. Thanks all! See you at KH ! Dave -
Doug, PM me your phone number, I'll double check with the other person tonight if they are a definite, and let you know tonight. I'll be at Knockhill tomorrow afternoon though, so you'd need to pick up in the morning or on Sunday. I might be able to get them to Knockhill, but I'm likely to have a set of track wheels in the car as it is so it'll be a bit tight !! I'll give the other person first dibs thogh, as they did originally contact me in Feb. Cheers Dave

Help regarding accident and can this be fixed ?
dave_morgan replied to VAL113R's topic in Scottish Scoobies
I meant to add, if you can't agree a good settlement figure with the insurance company, ask them to throw in the car as part of the settlement. Then sell off all the decent bits to the best bidder (or the complete car as a repairable). By using second hand bits, the repair will obviously be a lot cheaper, and it might be salvageable. You'll need a vehicle inspection certificate after it's complete before it'll go back on the road, but they're not that hard to get by all accounts (if the job is done right). With the right garage you'd probably get it back on the road for 3k ish, possibly less depending on how bad the damage is (and if the engines ok). -

If it's a 93 car, it's definitely a write of I'm afraid . Looks like both chassis legs are bent and the nearside one has bent into the pulleys, so there could be engine damage as DRB5 mentioned. Was the engine still running after the crunch, or did you switch it off ? To replace all the damaged panels with new Subaru ones (which the insurance company will use for pricing it) I'm thinking you're talking over £3k + vat. If you add engine damage to that you're taking another £1000+, and then there's labour on top of that. Bad news I'm afraid The main thing is you're still in one piece. The car's only a piece of metal at the end of the day !!! (can't believe I just said that !!) Dave -
Doug, They are provisionaly sold, but if it drops through I'll let you know. They are the same as the ones in your picture, but in gold. The tyres would best be described as track tyres, as there's not much tread left on 2 of them TBH, and the other 2 are pretty worn too. I used them for track days on my sti 5. I'll know for sure on Sunday, so will let you know after that. Dave
