having heard from a few different sources that the police can now access your insurance details at the roadside and will book you for undeclared mods (insurance will be void too) I thought I had better get in contact with my insurance company.
I am having a remap next week and thought I had better tell them about it and the mods taking place in preparation.
I gave them a call and told them that I already have 18" BBS alloys, STI splitter and boot spoiler, a stainless exhaust (road legal) and a cosworth panel filter.
well, I was expecting the old 'we won't insure your wheels' quote to come back from them but instead they told me that the spoiler and the stainless exhaust wasn't covered.
I told them that the spoiler was a factory fit option but they told me to prove that it was fitted from new or they wouldn't pay if I was in an accident! I bought the car used so how the hell do I prove that???
they also told me that they would insure a mild steel replacement exhaust but not a stainless one which I find hard to understand if it is a road legal system?
anyway, all this was before I mentioned the boost solenoid, remap, 2nd cat delete pipe all to go on the car this week.
so to cut a long story short they cancelled my policy (without cancellation fee) there and then !
so a quick call to Gary at Keith Michaels, a deposit over the phone and I am covered for the mods both present and planned and only £180 more / year than what I was paying. (I would rather pay the extra and be covered than have an accident and be told to prove parts of my car are factory fitted or get no payment !!!)
so big thanks you to Gary Keith Michaels and to those undertaking mods, check with your insurance company before doing anything or they will void your insurance.
in fact I would read the small print as it seems like they are after any excuse not to pay out. I would imagine even after market stereos would come into this?
Be warned.
