  1. The previous model was 60k miles for non turbo engines. Tensioner s and pulleys often reused up to 120 k and water pumps last ages. Garage bill for Cambelt should not be as high as for a turbo cos access is a bit easier so job may be quicker
  2. Hmm, interesting but 800 Aus dollars (500 pounds UK) extra for the manual pack over the automatic pack, for just a gear stick and gear knob sounds like they are taking the P just a bit
  3. Looking under bonnet from the front, if there's such a filter its right at the top, just inside from the right (passenger side) suspension turret, ie behind the battery near the bulkhead- but late models don't have this replaceable filter just the one in the tank. If its not there you need a refund from your last dealer service!
  4. I have a 2003 petrol manual Forester,AW spec bought as a dealer pre registered/ as new with 17 miles on the clock, now 130 k and reckon that's still the best all rounder for me, mainly on weekends and also my wife's runaround during the week. Great in winter, mild off road, launching boat off beach etc, and good on A and B roads. fuel consumption (lucky to hit 30-32) is the only weak spot really. Also found replacing the original bridgestones with Michelin latitude tyres improved turn in and cornering and wet grip. Tyres last 40 k easily. Think It's made my mind up to keep it another 100K miles ! Our Impreza GX is my daily work car and toy. Have thought about changing it for a second forester believe it or not, Half wishing I'd bought one of the last turbo mark 2 foresters a few years back.
  5. Splashed out £3.30 on an Autocar magazine including a road test of the new Forester. didn't get a particularly good rating (3 out of 5 possible stars) but reading between the lines it seems a decent set of tyres might have improved things. Reports of the handling don't seem particularly good. Sure there will be folks out here who will disagree.
  6. How do you know it's genuine and not at this price just a cheap Chinese copy ! Being serious.
  7. Ive used motaquip filters for Subarus from my local factors for a good few years, made in France and appear high quality finish and internals, less than 5 pounds.
  8. Isnt the crankshaft pulley bolt much tighter than that? 180 or 220 Nm rings a bell? Its definitely a breaker bar job, with a 22mm socket
  9. Need to try it myself to believe. How long have these clay bars been around then ? Seen them just a couple of years or so ago, I tend not to believe in the hype of owt new until well established or at east accepted by the real world if you know what I mean? Will it work on cars that are driven all year round not just the April to October crowd?.
  10. Oops. Pity to hear this, You'll be lucky to find one in a hurry though.
  11. Might need your nearest subaru dealer .
  12. My lad is on hol in the states right now and said there's loads of tv ads for the new forester over there. 240 horse power 2litre turbo with 7.5 sec 0 to 60sounds good but auto box?
  13. Pity didn't have this yesterday, put 40quids worth in both cars. But thanks for posting up anyway, Still a bit time left on tem
  14. Believe Subaru water pumps last a bloody long time. The tensioner is often replaced but advice I've heard (from a dealers workshop) and used is that if it isn't leaking or showing any signs of grease from the seal then its ok to reset and re-use. The bearings on the tensioner pulley and all other pulleys are easily checked for play, noise or any roughness by hand once the belt is off and just replace any that need to be. Found on my forester that after 120k only 2 idler wheels showed any signs of noise but I replaced all anyway (dealer didn't change any at 60k).
  15. Might call the old no. I have and see if any word when might be open. Will let you know if any change. Colin
  16. Stopped by the DC museum in Twynholm today and there was a sign on the door saying closed until further notice. So the May run out wont work! Will keep my eyes open for any news when it might be open again, cheers
  17. Read something yesterday that some national main dealers are regularly sub contracting out all sorts of work including basic maintenance to back street garages, but charging main dealer prices, in some cases cheap filters etc fitted but charging for main dealer/manufacturer parts. Have avoided the big chain main dealers for years (Doesn't apply to Subaru anyway) ever since the showrooms became big glassy things with waiting rooms or cosy chairs and magazines to make you feel like you're getting something good for nowt, ha ha.
  18. You should try v power in your GL, My non turbo forester and GX both get at least 3-4mpg more on it so easily pays for itself and may be bit more responsive as well.
  19. Filled up last night, apart from a little +sign on the pump handle, noticed no change in price etc. but with the shell e mail yesterday, promo leaflets etc at the till etc, feels purely like marketing hype and no more.
  20. Putting the car away in the garage 8:30 tonight, neighbour kindly opened her door and shouted " IT MUST BE THE LOUDEST CAR ON THE F...ING PLANET!!!" Then proceeded to slam her door shut, which probably made more noise than me lol She is going to love the 6am wake up on wednesday morning Yeah, I was going up the A1Western bypass about that time, and thought at first it was a Tornado taking off from the airport then realised it was about time you'd be putting your car away! Update Weds please
  21. Ever an eye for a bargain LOL. I spotted some extra strength concentrate in WIlkinsons with 75%off. So 30odd pence per litre, and its good pink stuff. Bought 6litres ha ha. The el-cheapo supermarket ranges though are usually made with a proportion of recycled solvent so stink and always have doubts as to what the cheap stuff will do to paintwork
  22. Mines just a GX so rather than leave them for dead on the straights I tend to show them a thing or two off roundabouts or twisty sections. Yes last weekend there was the golf, the odd Quasqai and minis. There's a great line in the book "the accidental angler" where there's a lull in the fishing and they end up discussing about how fast an Impreza can go round a roundabout. Fantastic little line to an Impreza owning fisherman who loves the drives out up the coast or up the hills before anyone else is out of bed
