  1. Well, mystery solved.

Despite sounding like it was coming from further back, it was indeed something getting caught in the fan. The connector cable for the fan itself had worked loose and the air was forcing it onto the blades when the fans were going, but not when I just turned the fans slowly myself.

So simple fix with a bit of tape in the end and a big thanks to Greers for sorting it out there and then whilst I waited. :)

  2. Did you have any work done to the car recently? I'd check in the fan shroud to make sure there's no debris, then start wiggling parts in that area, specifically the coolant reservoir and the cam cover.

Full service 14 days ago. Is going back to the same place so we will see if they have managed to get anything stuck where it should't be. I have poked, prodded and wiggled everything, but still makes the noise. Will find out tomorrow I suppose.

  3. sure its not from the fan as it could be fan bearing. was that you outside the banbary premier inn that was having an inspection of it?

if it wasnt only when fan kicks in i would have said cambelt idler or tension pulley. definite no no to fix if you dont know what your doing.

i would try spraying some wd40 into fan first myself then if that cured it follow up with spray of white grease.

other idea would be to see if noise only appears when air con is active as second fan only runs when this is on. (well on my classic anyway)

Aye that was me. Was it you with the red Wagon?

Still no wiser on what is causing it so it is getting looked at tomorrow. Still convinced that the noise isn't coming from the actual fans, but from something further back. It is only when the fans come on, and it seems irellevant to whether the aircon is on or off.

I have noticed that there is a bolt missing from the coolant bottle mounting. I wonder if that has somehow gone somewhere it shouldn't!

  4. I am totally mechanically inept so looking for any ideas on what might be causing this.

When the cooling fans come on, there is a loud constant rattling DDRRRRRRRR type noise. It spent the entire McRae Gathering weekend doing this.

It isn't coming from the fans themselves, which are free of obstructions and seem to work fine. The noise is coming from inside the section at the front of the engine to the nearside, next the belts, as per the arrow on the photos below.

The car itself runs and drives fine.

    Any ideas anyone?

  5. A huge well done to Grant, Imy and Andy. There are so many words to describe the weekend and what you achieved.

To organise such an event, the preparation, the logistics of the convoy and arranging the mosaic was an immense achievement.

It was a truly amazing and fantastic weekend and a massive thank you goes out to all three of you, together with the rest of the helpers on the day, for organising such an event that we could be part of.

The weekend will live in the memories of all of us for a very long time to come.

    Cheers

    James

  6. Check you actually booked the accommodation rather than just imagining you did - check!

Checking though my Emails on both my Email accounts and could find no confirmation of the booking. :D Checked on the company's website, no record of a booking. :( Getting worried I phoned them, not sure why it doesn't show up but booking was there after all and all is well. :icon_pray::(

Just need a dry day to get the car detailed and the stickers on, then I will be good to go! :)

  7. James the AERO crud that people are selling on Ebay is about as useful as t1ts on a nun. theres so many FAKE flatblades out there people, pick carefully, and always get opinions and better still, use a name thats known and trusted.

    Tell me about it! :P

  8. I got a set of Areo VU blades from Ebay a few weeks back and they are truly awful.

Will need to change them again before the McRae Gathering as I don't think I could suffer them all the way if it is wet.

  9. Don't think the extended warranty is anywhere near as comprehensive as the manufacture's 3 year warranty. I think it is similar to the approved used car warranty that I had on mine when I bought it. Lots of exclusions in it.

I was offered an extended warranty at the end of my approved used car warranty but decided against it given the exclusions. Like Colzo, I just keep a wee bit aside in case of any unforeseen repairs.

It has just had its 6 year service today and got another clean bill of health. Got every receipt (including from previous owners) since it was new and it has had nothing but routine servicing although it has only done 35k. Seems a tough old bus!

  10. I am sure there will a few heading down. I won't be one of them though. Never really had the inclination to go to Wales.

Not been to the RAC / Rally GB since it's last visit to Kielder - those were the days!

In fact, until last year I hadn't been to any WRC rally since then, when I went over to the Rallye Deutschland. Probably head to Rally Ireland next year.

Should be a good atmosphere in the stadium.

  11. It is a bit quiet on here at the moment, but as said above, it is the summer and you would expect that.

There is more to the club and more to owning a Subaru than just a forum. :iagree:

You get more posts on Scoobynet but somethimes I just can't be bothered having to wade through all the sh!t@ you get on there!

  12. They are 17s but that was through choice, a combination of 18s, Prodrive springs and South Lanarkshire finest roads would to TOO bone rattling!! ;)

Can't be any worse than the roads in Renfrewshire!

Nice looking Bug. I'd definitely put some flaps on.
