thewelsho Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 I bought some Meguiars car cleaning products: Step 1 Paint Cleaner; Step 2 Polish; Step 3 Carnuaba (sp?)Wax. After 4 hours of rubbing and polishing, the car looks really good. I only used the step 1 stuff on the bonnet though, as I was getting knackered, still the results were good. Trouble is, it took my 4 hours and I was well wrecked by the end of it. Is there any point in doing this as the car is only going to be manky again in 3 days! So, how often should the car be given this extensive kind of treatment, cause I there is no way I am going to invest that kind of effort and time too often!? On saying that, I have to do all that again cause the whole car got covered in freaking Cuprinol - don't ask!!!!
stevie 4 Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 yea mate its totally worth worth it your putting a protective coating on your car although i know how you feel i spent 2 hours yesterday giving my car an auto glym wash, polish and seal yesterday but i cheated i used a machine polisher to apply the polish before removing it by hand probably halved the polishing time
scoobyiain Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 You should only polish your car 2-4 times a year max. spending a whole day on your car is worth the effort as it makes it easier to maintain. top up with wax as often as you like as it does not damage paint. I could ramble on for a while about detailing cars but not going to bore everyone.

glen_cadwallader Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 I use polished bliss for detailing my motors, they are awesome. Only really worth it though if you have a 20k + motor as its about £400 a shot.
ScoobyDougie Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 Ah go on, go on, go on...have a ramble[] Seriously, I'm still in 'old skool' when it comes to detailing so could use some advice. It's mostly the autoglym products i've used in the past but i'm aware that things have moved on slightly. Advice much appreciated. Cheers.
dougster Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 No need to ramble when you have Polished Bliss Poorboys and Swissvax(Swissol) are excellent products. Iain I touch goats.
glen_cadwallader Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 heh cool, they have used my RS6 engine bay in there opening sequence.
scoobyiain Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 £400 is a hefty price tag, i charge in the region of £100 for a full exterior detail. Advantage of spending 8-12 hours getting your paintwork sorted is, it is easier to keep your car looking its best from minimal effort after that. I just need to spend 20mins giving my car a wash and it come up like new everytime as i have spent the time with polish wax etc You don't need to spend a great deal of money to get your car looking good but to protect it i recommend the more money the better if you don't have time on your hands. A recent test was done on my car with various waxes ranging from £10 to £500+ on different panels and after a couple of weeks the cheaper waxes were near gone but the higher end ones are still doing a great job. the most expensive wax was applied to my spoiler and have not had a wash mit near it in 2 months. I cannot stress enough to people not to polish their cars all the time as polish does remove clearcoat and eventually paint if all clearcoat is removed. The audi bonnet i detailed was 18 years old so had no clearcoat left on it and when i was polishing it with a white applicator pad it ended up the same colour as the car. Good polish is also cheaper than paying a bodyshop to rectify any faults in your paint. Again the audi bonnet i done i a great example of what can be done and for those who did not see it here is the 50/50 Also some scratch removal on my Alison's clio using a machine polisher Is spending hours on end worth it? YES
Jamis Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 I also got Meguiars 3 step stuff and just topped up with wax at the weekend before a wee show i was at.Got awarded best kept so it gets a thumbs up fae me,i use mine every day 40 mile round trip 6 days a week so not bad i think.

dougster Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 [8-)] Still need some of the wonder product to do the UNDERNEATH of my car...................[A] Iain I touch goats again mate.
thewelsho Posted June 12, 2007 Author Posted June 12, 2007 I'm having a major struggle trying to get this Cuprinol cr@p off of my paint work! Whole car is covered in it!!!!! ARGH! NEVER use those poxy spray guns that fat bloke in the ads uses. The slightest bit of a breeze and the whole neighbourhood will be covered in it. Anyway, I have tried clay bar, T-cut, paint cleaner and washing up liquid, yes, one after another (I can see ScoobyIain whince in agony)! At this rate I am not going to have any paint left on the car! I have shifted a lot of it, but still much of it is there. The parts that I have managed to shift, I gave a final polish and will wash the car again tonigh then apply the the "Step 3" Meguirs wax, but I think I am going to have to live with the tiny speckled pattern. ARGH! Suggestions for cleaning most welcome.
dougster Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 "you should try TEFLON doug its immense" I will if I can get some and use it for the inside of my 4x4s arches and chrome slider bars. Feel free to send me some [] This is a "detailing" thread and I'm dead sure teflon is NOT going to get the results people contributing to this thread are looking for. I hope to receive some products from Polished Bliss soon and will post before and after results on the car(s) I am going to work on.
johns Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 John - try white spirit to remove the Cuprinol stuff, as that's what it says to clean the brushes with after you have applied it. Won't damage the paintwork, though it will strip off any wax you have on, and leave an oily film on the car that will wash off (lots of suds), then polish and wax etc. John
