In my opinion guys i like both classic& newage models i would have both if i had the funds but my Newage WRX01 is my first scooby and have enjoyed every minute of it since i got it,so maybe i will try a classic next time around and see what the difference is between them until then i will keep enjoying driving a subaru regardless of what model[H]

The classics were great car in their time but technology has moved on and so has car design/dynamics. Subaru could save millions in R&D by saying "boys we've made a mistake, tell the designers to crack open the classic molds we're going back in time.

As far as driving goes in standard form some classics i tried did feel a bit sharper than standard new age's.

I really wanted a 22b when i bought my bug ,IMO it was a far better driving car than my car when standard but my girlfriend wouldn't let me she summed up what most non Subaru enthusiasts think she said

'you cant spend that much on the blue one ,it looks too old fashioned'[:D]

Still might buy one though[:D]

[:D] sacrilege!

it's interesting to read everyone's views on this - demonstrates the differences that we look for in a scoob.

For me, I like classics because:

- i love the 'sleekness' of their look

- they feel smaller to drive (newages feel too bulky for me when i sit in one)

- you can hear a lot more of whats going on in the engine

- older car = cheaper road tax (always a bonus)

- depreciation not a factor as they are older cars

- association with Colin McRae and initial WRC success

- rarer to see on the road than newages = exclusivity

I've not driven a newage to compare against driving my RA so I may change my mind in the future [:P]

For my tuppenthe worth of drool.

My first Subaru has been a MY56 Hawkeye WRX straight out the new box.

I have had not had a shot of any other type of Subaru whatsoever.

Normally I dont buy a car new 'cos they are not worth the wallet-ache as soon as they have left the showroom but this was an internet deal on a new Subaru.

Big difference was price. Cheaper than Fab 1's original Peaugeot 307 quicksilver (which quick-silvered its way to second hand trade in after 2 years as it became dangerous to drive).

So, I have no idea about classics (although I really have always loved the shape) but in fairness, This new car of mine has been faultless.

As far as looks go, I dont think it can be matched.

MY08 though [+o(] not in my driveway... Ever.

I love my Haykeye. End of story.

Colin McRae never drove a Newage competetively.............................fact

I am for Classics, but McRae drove a Newage competetively last year in the X Games in the States. And it was definately competetively as he rolled it in the staduim when leading and still kept going to get 2nd. [:D]

Does anyone know how much bhp / flbt more a new age car

will need to have over a classic to be as fast ?

I ask because the only advantage i can see a classic

has, is weight.

I love classics but ....... :-

new ages are less "chavvy" in the public's eyes

all the young kn0bbers are picking them up ( classics) cheap and ruining the fragile reputation of Subaru owners

they have tiny interwarmers

they are less comfy

and the older classics have interiors that make a cave look modern

they are badly showing their age ( not always a bad thing though)

New ages are fatter and stiffer but I just love em'.......Weirdly I prefer STi7 scoop over the STi8 & 9's though.........

Good thread though

My first post here, so hello to everyone.

I sold my classic impreza in september last year i had owned it for 2 years and i must say it was a fantastic car. I had spent a few £££ in modifying it and expect the BHP was around 270 at the most. I then bought a diesel so i could save some money and get a newer car. (classic was N reg)

I went to newcastle saturday just past and came home with an black 03 plate STI PPP. I have to say i am completley amazed with the car, it handles far better than my classic ever did and that 6 speed box is an absolute gem.

I had a 2wd cossie before the classic with a harvey gibbs built engine 352bhp, it would reach just under 130mph on a certian quiet road (private) from a standing start. The Classic scoob would make it to 110mph. Yesterday i tried it in the new STI, it achieved just over 120mph and spun the wheels off the line, now that was a surprise and through me, so i think i could achieve over the 125mph. I'm not going to bother trying it again as i know what it can do now.

I have never been in a classic STI so my comparison (newage STI with PPP vs my old Classic N reg Uk car) is obviously a bit unfair. If i ever have the chance to drive a classic STI i'm sure it will be delightful.

I think people class the classic shape impeza as the last of that shape which actually looks good, the first cars realeased look pretty crap and really they are the true classics as they are the first, but we dont buy them for looks do we!!

True, the interior of my original 94UK turbo was shocking (was bought by someone the month that they went on sale in the UK). Had awful looking "tweed" seats.

The large turbo (TD05) that was in it was fun IMO, on boost it gave you so much of a shove in the back compared to the TD04's of the later classics, although across back roads there'd be nothing in it.

Definitely prefer the new one to that original though (and not just 'cos the seats are nicer [:D] )

I think opinions will change when the new model comes out.

Yes the current newage has many advantages over the classic. It is much stiffer, safer and a nicer place to be if used as an everyday car but will the 08 not be even stiffer, safer etc etc. Where will that leave the current newage?

Well, the hatches are here.

Have opinions changed? Are the boys chopping in newages for classics and hatches a taste of things to come?

Genuinely interested, nit just having a dig BTW.

I realy like the new newage but also realy like hawks (only STI's). But as Jerry "the helmet" Clarkson says about the Ferrari's comparing an Enzo with an F40 if you stamp on the gas the Enzo puts your gas stamp past an electronic panel of electronic judges before the power goes down unlike the F40 when you press the gas the gas goes down ...... I would imagine that its the same story with scoobs !! :rotfl:

Ps, mon the classics :rotfl:

This is one of those topics that'll just go on & on & on................

At the end of the day they are all scoobs & thats what really matters!

But i'll stick in my tuppence while i'm here anyway lol.

For me the best looking scoobs are classics & Blobeyes, it was the classic that i fell in love with & got me into scoobs in the 1st place, but i've never owned one but i've driven a few (wrx's & Type R)

The Bug & hawkeye front ends don't look as nice as a classic or blob ( i did owned a bug myself) & the new hatch just isn't a scoob imho.

IMO the best looking scoobs are the 22b, Type R's & Wr1's (ok thats 2 - 1 to the classics there lol)

We are lucky enough to have a Clasic Type R & a Wr1 in our garage so we have the best of both worlds really.

Classics maybe lighter but are more flimsy - FACT

Newages are heavier but are stiffer & more solid - FACT

Both the classic & blobeyes won WRC championships _ FACT

I can't be bothered listing any more as most have already been brought up in this thread already - FACT (lol)

Someone metioned about newages being full of electronics thats more the '05 cars onwards, i have an auto mode on my dccd where there is a ecu doing the thinking but i ALWAYS switch to manual as i hate the car deciding what it wants to do i preffer to do the driving, if i wanted a car full of driving aids i'd have bought a Sh*tsibushi lol.

What i do know is that a standard Wr1 can kick any standard classics ass.

But i can appreciate all scoobs whatever the shape / model which we all should do as it's the common ground that brought us all together!
