Dead confused - downpipes

right... not that I can afford it for a wee while yet, (moving house) but i really want to get the car remapped, but before I do, i will need to get the centre section and downpipe changed.

Now, i'm a little club-handed with a spanner, but could possibly rally some troops to help me with it, if it was the sort of thing I could manage myself.

I've read and read about it but still don't know whats going on.... I could do with a little help with terminaology, parts names and like rough prices.

stop me anywhere that I no longer make sense.

Going from the final result and working backwards ... I don't want the really fancy apexi that andy F offers, because think the ecu in my car is pretty good anyway (its a 99 import wrx, standard with the only mod being a ninja backbox) but am still confused by all the other options there are. so firstly what kind of remap is it that i'm after?

secondly, I don't want to go silly on modifying, so am I right in thinking that just a 2.5" will suffice? and why do some pipes go from 3" to 2.5" ? is that for connecting to an original centre section, or is there somebenifit to the narrowing|  .. where do I get all these bits from, and am I as well just to get them fitted at a garage? (i'm in edinburgh)

so - pricing....... I am real skint, so would love to do this on a shoestring...anyone want to give their best guesses?

Cheers all.

The downpipe has a 3" openning at one end because that's the size of the exit on the turbo - due to internal wastegate etc.

The standard system is 2.5" diameter the rest of the way, so it will taper to that. I think you can clear 300bhp on a 2.5" system, so there's probably not a need to go to 3"

From memory the classic exhaust is in 3 parts after the turbo- DP, Centre, BB. I'm not sure where the cats are, I think in the DP and the centre (which is also resonated). So for a full decat you'd need to replace the centre and the DP. There's loads of different places to get stuff from. eBay, scoobyworld, scoobysport. This is Hayward and Scott's page for the Impreza - http://www.haywardandscott.co.uk/results.asp?category=13

Their kit is pretty good, but shop around and you might pickup some good bargains, like in our own for sale section.

The other option is to go to somewhere like Meercat or C+C and get a custom system built.

I've managed 326bhp on my STI V3 with closed neck decat downpipe and 2.5" centre and rear section - so 2.5" is plenty big.

I've now fitted a 3" open neck downpipe cause my old HKS d/ rotted through. I bought a stainless one from the US for £129 delivered, it's a Megan Racing item but it was for the newage model (despite the Ebay ad..) and I had to get 3" cut off the rear section. Now looking for a 3" centre and backbox.

p.s. Standard ECU - not remapped. Fuelling is fine in my V3 Sti according to the last RR run.

right so looks like they'll do the pipes for about 200 for the dp and 90 for the centre. i had a look on ebay but have heard thatpeople have been having nightmares with the pipes not fitting properly and end up spending way more anyway. don't know how true that is... thanks stephen, i'llkeep an eyeon the for sale section.

GUS! hello... are you the man who can do it all for a tenner? [:(]

Well Gus is supplying me with a DP for a new age. I've currently got the third cat replacement pipe fitted from the guy he gets them from and it was very nice quality. If the DP is as good then I'll be well chuffed.

The proof is in the pudding as they say, and we'll find out in just over a month if this particular pudding is good or not.

YOUR ECU IS OK IF YOU DONT WANT DECENT POWER BUT FOR 700+VAT ( I THINK) ANDY FORREST WILL SUPPLY AND FIT/MAP A POWER FC AND COMMNDER. IT WILL ENSURE PROPER FUELING ( WHICH IS THE REASON WHY MOST OF THEM POP !) AND THE DRIVABILITY AND DIFFERENCE IN THE CARS CHARACTER IS AMAZING.. ASK ABOUT... BUT DONT COMPARE YOUR ECU TO THE APEXI JOB...DIFFERENT LEAGUE ! IN EVERY WAY !!  YOU WOULDNT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE !!

rab - cheers mate, i will look into what you said .. 7oo+v is next-year money though.. I was hoping to come in a lot less than that.

I am only looking to get my car running sweetly for what it is, not looking to thrash any scooby round kh or anything.... thats why I want to get rid of the cat first off, its just choking the car, and then map it to fuel correctly for that set up.

If I change the DP and Centre section now and map in the future, will I be causing any adverse effect upon the engine in the meantime?

gus -ps. cheers i'll keep you updated!
