As a relitivey new member it would be good to have a meeting place ,where new members could be introduced to each other and get to know long term mems/ i was at the last knockhill sidc outing and i felt like no one wanted to talk, although i had my track car there. I had to introduce my self to a few members to get conversation going .WHEN you join a new club its nice to get to know people and be made a part of the club and not an outsider whats your comments GEO[{]

Geo,

FAI17 (aka Peter) holds the other SIDC meeting place on a Saturday night in Paisley.  A lot of members meet there for dinner.

Each section holds a monthly meet.  The glasgow one is the first thursday of the month.  These are good places to meet folk and get to know everyone..

Look in the events section for the meet near you.

I've not had time this year, but went on one of the Fife runs last year. It was the first time I'd met a lot of them and was made to feel very welcome. Had a great day out.

Attend the meets - look in the meets section.  That's where people get to know each other and talk, but at an event (aside from the cold etc) you have to introduce yourself to new members because no one knows who is an SIDC member, who is there just to watch, who is there by accident, etc.

One good way of letting people know your a member of the SIDC is to buy some of the clothes that IMY organises.  These have the SIDC scottish scoobies logo and also you can have your forum name or real name or both on them.

my biggest gripe with the sidc, and most forums at that. is when a new

memeber posts up a thread. and some1 posts a link to the same thign

really that was psoted  ayear ago or something, and thats the end

of it.

no one think the new members might wana get involved in the discusion? as aposed to reading an old thread..

Or let it slip that you've got a trailor, cheap bits for sale, or have a hot unattched sister etc.

Then everyones your friend.

from what i remember geo you are the man to see about whiteline stuff so people will soon get to know you as the stuff is rated highly on here.

I can see your point but the sort of post that get a handy link posted into them often go ...."can I decat witout a remap???"

Where if they had said " I've done a search and read about decats but still have a few question...." it would be a different story.

i dont mean stuff like that, posts like where do people live, what do

you do for a living. egenral threads which would have alot of banter in

them. as apsoed to reading old posts which your not involved with

TBH I'm not a big fan of threads like that. What model car, how old, what job etc. Please just fill in the details and press enter. If a newbie started a thread like that the same people would just fill in the same detaila and press enter again.  You might have learned a fact ot two about somebody but you haven't really gotten to know them or interacted with them.

Don't get me wrong I'm all for the new blood. In fact I started a thread today specifically about them and the common questions that they ask but it wasn't in an attempt to silence them. As I said we're all learning and if it can spark some debate that can only be a good thing. Thats when you'll get to know someone

interesting thread! As a fairly new member (this year) myself, I have just introduced myself at the meets, its the best way to go about things. I have also ordered an SIDC top so it will be obvious that I am a member!

So far since getting me car I've went on the September run (owned the car less than a week at that time) and the October Glasgow meet even though im from Kilmarnock. Just not been free on the Ayrshire nights so far. I also joined in the Edinburgh night out when the Americans came over to visit. Last night on a whim I showed up at the Other SIDC and it was great to start to recognise a few people. If you try to get involveed people will get to know you. I'm all for helping out the Santa Cruise, (75 raffel tickets so far...) as well as its a fantastic cause. I'll be there in December so thats another occasion to meet people.

Don't get me wrong I wouldnt know someone from the Aberdeen area yet, not been to enough big meets but I'm sure a few people from the Glasgow area now know me and I know them. I can't even talk shop with them as quite frankly my car knowledge is completly non existant in comparion (last car was a 1 litre micra) but by talking to them I alsa have learned a lot and will continue to do so. (Ok maybe I now know more about squirrel's than cars but thats an unfortunate side effect)

A lot of it can be down to how you come accross when you first talk to others rather than other people having to talk to you first. If you make a little effort it can go a long way to making you another member of the SIDC.

I`m not a member of the SIDC but joined the forum to talk to Scottish Scooby owners. I have owned Imprezas since 2000 (on my 4th now) and feel I could share some of my knowledge and learn more about the cars aswell. I also post on ScoobyNet which I find useful for various things but would like to attend meets and go for runs etc. Does not actually being a member mean that I can`t come along to the meets? I`ve been to SIDC track days on many occasions but not so much recently due to work commitments. I find if your cars not parked in the Pit Lane you`re abit of an outsider (only my opinion of course), and these days they seem to be more Lotus owners. Hope to meet some of you soon in the Glasgow/Central areas. [:)]

I aint a full member but still do the social side of things

At the last Knockhill i spotted Westlothianscoobs old wagon there and someone about to jump in.  I knew this was a newbie and hollered out across the pit area.  It was AlanK and was about to head home but cause some idiot hollered at him, he decided to sit down with a few other members for a warm cuppa and he got to know a few of us.  Now after chatting on MSN a couple of times we are due to get married in the summer.....................[:P]

There are other ways to get to meet folk too. You often see posts from someone looking for help in a specific area - joiner, tiler, plumber etc. In my case it was computers. Didn't know The Squirrel, but offered to help out. Top bloke and through him met Imy, Pete (fai 17) and a few others and sampled some top chinese cuisine as a bonus. Not had nearly as much time to get involved as I would have liked this year, but looking forward to Pete's in two weeks [:)]

that's spot on.

The meets normally have smaller groups and everyone is a member of the forum = minimal fear in saying hi and looking like a twat

the events have other members of the public there = increased

chance you say hi to a totally random stranger that doesnt own a scooby

and looks at you like a twat!

it may be daunting making the initial contact and introducing

yourself.  You just need to do it once then things will get easier

the next time you are out with us, as you'll get to recognise

faces.

If you dont try, you wont get anything out from the

event/meet.

its one of the reason the clothes have our usernames on them, helps break the ice [:P]

Thanks for your comments guys I know about your runs around the countryside , but when i get home from work I dont feel like hairing about fife ,i see it every day in life.what i was suggesting was it would be nice to pick a local pub and talk cars or your experiencies or tec/ subjects ,invite new members tell them what your club is about ,tell some jokes bring  along the wifes ,I have 35 years in the motor trade within that 22 years as a police fleet manager,.  25 years of motor sport exp.  its nice to be able to convey some of  your  experencies or help tecnicaly .I also have many contacts in the trade for group buys ie suspension as you already know ,teflon ,big brake conversions etc I am looking forward to meeting all of you in the near future  GEO[:)]

thats quite true because at the dastek RR at the start of september, I was a latecomer due to workin nightshifts so I didna know if I would be up for the event, but when I arrived, it was Spooks that I approached because he had the SIDC top on! [Y]

George, the winter meets tend to be more of sit down affairs than runs in the country. At least the Glasgow ones are anyway. Watch out for your next fife one and see what higgy has planned.

Been at the last 2 Glasgow meets (First was a chat/small run/pub and the second a chat at the pub/tunnel) and everyone was friendly and said hi. Going to meet a group of strangers that know each other can be daunting, but I think you have to introduce yourself and make the effort. What you have to remember is that we all have the same interest, some may be novices and others technical boffins, but we all love our cars.

What has been said above is all true - I have been along to a couple of meets now and KH and although I wouldn't admit to getting married [;)] they are all a good friendly bunch and very welcoming!!!!!

Also a good reason to buy a jacket with your forum name!!  [:)]

Having said all that it's a good idea for newbie meet too?!?  [8-|]

Stand up and shout out your name was my approach[;)]...

But seriously if you don't introduce yourself then no one knows who you are.....

I did speak to you brievely at KH but only when you asked if i was FAI17[:)]

Get urself to as many meets as possible and for sure go and introduce urself, it was even more daunting for me ! i am English [;)] [:|]  ...u will find 99.5% of the members on here very chatty and helpful, i have made some very good friends through the meets ...

Trackdays are probably the worst place to go as a complete newbie because there is a huge mix of SIDC and non-SIDC people. The first event I attended was a trackday and I knew no one at all, and left still not realling knowing anyone. Of course the non-SIDC people are not shy either. I'm always talking to the lotus or caterham or whatever guys at the trackdays because everyone is more than happy to tell you about their own car, and it's a great way to learn the differences between them all. But they're not the people from the forums that you're trying to put faces to.

At the last KH day I was standing next to RS Grant at wheels around and I knew I recognised him, but I was racking my brains trying to work it out before blurting out something that might have lead to an akward social faux pas. Of course it would help if he stopped changing cars every 10 minutes.

Your local, or not so local, meet is definitely the place to go to first. We'll be the idiots standing in the pouring rain huddled under a bonnet prodding at shiny bits of metal.

Oh and Craig. I think I uttered the words "the English have no sense of humor" the first time I met you. I think your pink shirt proves that's not true [;)]
