STi_Bandit Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 What pressure should i be running my tyres at knockhill on satarday, ive heard a few stories about uping the pressure to avoid possible tyre poping off the rims during hi G cornering. Bandit
st3ph3n Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I upped the pressures in mine to avoid too much wear on the shoulder, specifically of the front left. I'd advise that if you're using the tyres that you will be using out on the roads. If it's track tyres then .... not sure. Someone with a clue will be along in a minute.
STi_Bandit Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 Yeah stephen, ill be using my road tires the eagle f1's i just got :-) not invested in a set of track tyres yet.
craigwrx Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Maybe getting a wee bit technical for a fun track day ? Tire pressure should be just enough to ensure the surface temperature is even across the width. Too little = Centre will not provide maximum grip Too much = Edges will not provide maximum possible traction Craig []
twofourdonkey Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 On a road tyre, the pressure can be upped a couple of psi to account for more side wall flex. Remember to check again after a few laps because of the heat in them. Track day tyres have stiff sidewalls so they can be run at lower pressures to increase grip. Too much pressure in a road tyre, and it's Bambi on ice. Too little, and you risk grounding the rim, popping the tyre off etc. It's a bit of a tightrope, but experiment a bit. You will know straight away if its wrong.
craigwrx Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 PS ...does this mean ur going for it mate ! leave these ultra high bhp boys for dust [y] Craig []
HairyDJ Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Experiment, but if you've got to drive home on them - keep checking them all day! At Arundel last month, we could see that some of the lower profile / softer inflations came really close to touching a rim to the surface when doing some of the tighter turning exercises Enjoy the day whatever!!
z1000 Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 First day i left them at road pressure and had loads of understeer but very little edge wear and any rough bits looked ok after the run home, second day lowered them to 28psi which improved understeer and didn't make much difference wear wise apart from half the pirelli missing on the sidewall on the front left. Running pirelli p-zeros which have been on nearly a year and done 2 track days and still 2/4mm tread alll round but halve been rotated corner to corner to compensate for the front left getting most abuse.
Auldy Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 Up the pressures a few psi 2start with, but check the pressures regularly as they will rise as ur tyres heat up! The lower the pressure, the quicker they heat up and grip better but will wear more and jus the opposite for higher tyre pressures! but it also depends on track conditions, low pressure in the wet or damp track for obvious reasons dont want no 1 to aquaplain off the circuit []
