New car - Motorpoint???????

Looking to upgrade to an STI and can spend about 20K. Would prefer to use a subaru dealer but obviously can get a new Impreza from motorpoint for 21K. Are they as good a deal as it looks. Warranty etc. any problems. Can get an 05 plate from S & S with 10k on the clock and get a better trade in on my old one but a new shape with delivery miles does appeal.

Any advice?

Thanks.

I got my WRX from motorpoint about a year ago. I have been taking it to a subaru dealership from then for services. When I asked them about warranty etc they said that as it is not a UK car it will only come with two years manufactures warranty instead of threeyears that you get on a UK car. Touch wood I haven't had any warranty issues yet, so don't know how hard it would be to recover costs through warranty work. Also the service book took some chasing up on my part as the car was supplied without one. After a couple of visits to the showroom it turned up in the post a couple of weeks later. One other thing, my car came from Malta so the service periods are not in line with UK service intervals, this hasn't been a problem as the Subaru dealership I have been using has just ammended the booklet to reflect the UK service periods.

Any Subaru sourced from motorpoint will come with the standard 3 year pan european warranty assuming it was sourced within the EU. Any dealer telling you otherwise is talking nonsense.

There was some issues with them last year but it all got sorted and everything is fine.

Just remember when you buy the car and get the documentation through from Subaru of Malta that you then contact Subaru UK and register the car with them so that they are aware of its existence and can register it with the dealer network.

I've had my malteser for 18 months now and got new rear shocks done under warranty in June without issue. Would buy from Motorpoint again as I quite liked their no-fuss approach. No haggling, no free mats and a tank of petrol, here's what it costs, take it or leave it.

Although do try a local dealer and see if you can haggle them down, plus they will give you more for any trade in, or they should anyway.

Mine is serviced to the maltese numbers - 1K, 9K, 19K, 28K, 38K. It goes up in 9 then 10 then 9 then 10 etc. etc. I get most of my servicing at a specialist rather than a main dealer too. No probs doing that for the warranty work.

Cheers for that. Next time I'm in I'll make sure it has been registered with the network. I was told about the two year warranty about a year ago so will check that out too.

If your car was bought after Malta joined the EU it's 3 years. Otherwise it's a 1 year motorpoint only warranty. I think they joined the EU in May 04.

Importing is a cheaper method for sure, but of course there are draw backs
that you should be aware off ...lower residual value, higher insurance and most
dealers will not take it as a p/x for your next car .....or am i wrong ....i am only going with what i read before my recent purchase ...

Lower resale - probably, but you paid £4K less for it in the first place, don't be so cheeky and think you'll get the same back for it.

Higher insurance - definitely not, Gary at Keith Michaels said that there wasn't a problem with mine as it was to UK spec as it had the alarm etc. Elephant had no probs before either.

P/X, not sure. I'm guessing if they want a sale bad enough they'll take anything.

I followed this on Scoobynet last yr as I was thinking about going down the supermarket route. I think the only issue that exists around the warranty now is that if you have the PPP fitted the 3-yr pan-european warranty is invalidated unless it's the supplying dealer (possibly in Malta, Cyprus or Greece) that does it.

So if getting the PPP at some point isn't a consideration then it's a cracking price.

Cheers for all the feedback. Went at lunchtime to check what they have (i'm in love) Crystal Grey STI. Have checked and they do have the 3 year warranty, although no tracker and no alarm.

Just got to convince the wife although being a bit of a petrolhead herself it shouldn't take much.

Heard good things about motorpoint.  Personally though, I would not buy a car brand new.  You lose far to much money, sometimes up to three grand the second you drive out of the showroom.  I would go to Subaru and get one that is 1-1 1/2 year old.  Thats my plans for next year anyway.

Hope you get a nice one soon!

Motorpoint fitted a CAT 1 alarm (Sigma) for me prior to me collecting the car, I have just checked my paperwork and it seems that I didn't pay any extra for it (I definately didn't haggle to get it fitted). Maybe worth checking with them.

They took mine, the trade in price wasn't brilliant but not a lot less than anywhere else I tried. I must admit it was really easy and straight forward. I arranged all mine over the phone so was expecting the worst when I turned up on the day, but everything went smoothly.

The offered me 1/4 less on my vectra against what I got in a private sale (which itself was lowish). But the guy made no bones about it - "this is what we'd get at an auction, which is where the car will go".

I think if you have a decent car in the first place you'd probably get a reasonable trade in.

I was offered just over £4K against a 05 STi with 7000 miles about 6 months ago but bought an 03 with loads of extras from subaru and got £6k as a trade in but the price to change was nearly the same so it's all about personal choice, a newer car that costs less but will be worth less or an older uk car that'll probably be worth bugger all in a year anyway !

Personally i like the shape of the STi 8/9 and would try and get a deal on one seing as there old stock now.

Stan palmers in carlisle had an STi 9 on a 06 plate for £20k a wee while ago.
