oobster Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 As above, Having a wee think about buying a 2nd car for work - currently use the scoob to go visit customers sites (sometimes building sites) all over Scotland, North of England and the gaffer has just asked me to cover Norwich too. Nothing to do with the cost of running the scoob - the company pays me for it anyway. Just dont fancy doing hunners of miles in it every month, and getting it all stone-chipped to feck. SO I know a few of you have 2nd cars - Gus has a saxo, Spooks & Brian have Primera's (i think) and Chris has an Astra. What i'm asking for is opinions on what to buy, what's reliable, cheap to insure and what gives good mpg. Opinions much appreciated ! []
iain_ogston Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 I've got an old style megane. 110bhp, so not fast but good enough for the queues on way to work. Mega cheap to insure and 38mpg. 80k miles and not one problem (except for the spring which broke two weeks ago - but thats just wear and tear)
the squiggle Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Merc Sprinter van courtesy of DHL Saves any unneccecery wear and tear on the Scoob, its 10 years old with only 37000 miles on her and i dont want ramp it up without due cause.
G.T. Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 1.1 saxo for me too does 3 journeys to my work for the scoobs 1 [:$]
wrxmania Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Nissan Primera G.T. - not overly cheap to run or insure (as its the twin cam) but great fun to drive, saves wear on the Impreza and it is very reliable. A cheaper Primera would be great for long journey to Norwich and be cheaper to run, buy and insure - say a 1.6 LX or equivalent. Brian []
ANDYJDMSTI Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 It looks great too: Is that a quote from the Stevie Wonder Car Appreciation Society??? [][]
colin_ross Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 My second car is my Subaru as I hardly ever use it. My main car is a 1.6 focus. Bought it from new and now has 50k on it and will keep it till its scrap. Means it can have the Subau as hardcore as I want as its not my family car and doesn't matter if I take it off the road for a few months to do some upgrades. Also mean I don't have to leave it outside tesco or have wee neds trying it on at every set of traffic lights. There are downsides though. I hate it when I see other cars going for it and I'm in the wrong car, when driving thru a tunnel, when I grab the window wiper instead of the indicator, again, the fact that when I do drive it it feels very scary as I'm not used to driving it etc etc etc
boris b Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 We have a Primera 1.6 LX ( 1995 ). Cheap as hell to insure, £80 3rd party fire n theft for me and the wife. 80,000 and never missed a beat. Good on fuel over distances and has usual Nissan comfort and mod cons. Doesn't look to bad either.
gus the bus Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 AS you say Andy Oobster I have the Saxo and its Mega cheap too run[] £137 a year for insurance inc business use. £75-£100 notes a month in fuel[] and easy as xxxx to maintain. Not the fastest motor but does the job it was bought for. Gus
bigdavie Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 me and trace have a citroen c5 vtr hdi ! fantastic mile muncher nobody does cruisers like citroen !! the hydroelastic suspension is so comfy im amazed other manufacturers havent snapped up the technology !! and with 54 mpg you cant complain also it has all the mod cons air con / abs/ebd/ brake assist / automatic lights /automatic wipers /height adjustable suspension /full on board computer /power steering / all round e/windows /alarm /immobiliser /heat reflecting windscreen /alloys /crackin standard sound system (clarion ) i love this car so much i decided not to sell it after taxiing it !! it's that good !! ps its also a encap 5 star car !!
RRS 555 Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Scooby is my second car. She's done 56k since new(1998) with me and I can't bear to part with her. Main car is a Range Rover Sport, great car not quite as fast as Scooby.
tom_paxton Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 A 1.2 Corsa. I haven't had a "wee" car for years, and it feels a lot quicker than the 1.0 Polos and stuff I used to have.
bigbadboab Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 A bit impractible. I used to have a 1.9TDi Passat and it was comfy and cheap to run.
david_duncan2 Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 Can recommend a Fabia vRS----Gp.9 insurance, 50mpg+ on a run and quiet on Motorway/A roads due to high 6th.gear( 32.5mph/1000rpm). Well equipped too with standard A/C and single CD player( can be upgraded) and good potential for easy/low cost re-mapping from 128 to 175bhp and 228 to about 300lb.ft. torque. Dave.
oobster Posted May 15, 2006 Author Posted May 15, 2006 Cheers for all the opinions folks [] Only looking to spend a couple of grand, been looking @ Primera's on eBay & Autotrader.
Gumball Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 Andy, The gashtra is away now. I would consider a focus if you had enough? i dont know how much a 1.4 or 1.6 zetec would cost these days but theyre very good cars. same with at the cheap end....................a 97, 98, 99 Laguna? cheap and would maybe do. i am thinking of getting a laguna, vectra or gash golf for work

Very nice car to drive and powerful. (1.9 DCi)
SEEVERS Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 Andy, why not keep an eye out for a half decent Honda that's within your price range....the engines in them are superb. I owned 2 VTi's before i bought my Scoob and they were both quality cars....good mpg and not too bad on insurance either. Del.

wrxmania Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Try this one Andy: http://forums.sidc.co.uk/forums/684664/ShowPost.aspx Brian []
oobster Posted May 17, 2006 Author Posted May 17, 2006 Cheers for that Brian, but it'll be a couple of months minimum before I can get the cash together []
Gumball Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 If i had a second car what is it? I dont have a second car anymore but im very excited at the thought of my new one thats on the horizaon. Its got around 150bhp, 2 doors, leather couches inside, and does about 30+mpg. its going to be slower, more refined and not something that im going to worry about getting pinched as i sleep.
