micra_wrc Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 good post davie. brought back memories of my childhood...... << When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops, or wooden Scholls, or black plimsoles and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels. >> i remember doing that, and also collecting and swapping the 'spokey dokeys' from Sugar Puffs << As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat. >> I still have a scar on my forehead from when I was lying lengthwise in the back seat and rolled forward during an emergency stop and cracked my head off some video tapes my dad had put in the wee space between the front seats << We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded. >> the only time my mum would see me during the summer holidays was at mealtimes. Although we didnt have watches, we knew when we had to go home for dinner and usually said to our friends we'll be back out after our tea! other things that i did.. - played for ages in a cheapy "Wendy House" in my back garden...... we had imagination back in those days - cried when it rained cos it meant i wasnt allowed out to play and I was stuck indoors - quite happy sitting on the kerb digging at the dirt with an ice lolly stick! - collected ring pulls from aluminium cans and strung them into a necklace - learnt to ride a bike on my cousins chopper and was over the moon when I got my own bike, complete with streamers on the handle bars and a basket on the front - 50p was enough to do you for a day, bag 10p mix, slushy ice pole things and jubilees those were happy days
scientific steve Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 ah, takes me back you can still get space dust, remember havin about 2 packets in my gob and drinking a tin of coke or trying too
IanJ Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 << you can still get space dust >> I know....i caught the kids feeding it to the dogs before Christmas LOL

IanJ Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 They were fine, the eejits were lapping it up and making faces worse than Bez on a night out Had to stop myself laughing when i told them to stop it.
G.T. Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 << I know....i caught the kids feeding it to the dogs before Christmas LOL >> thats quality why did i never think of that when i was a wean i remember this boy i kneww used to do bad things to frogs with straws he was one sick kid
st3ph3n Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Does no one feed dogs beetroot anymore? Or throw worms in fires. Or torture insects by de-legging them? I was reading in the news today about someone calling for children not to be smacked anymore. An ASBO is more appropriate it seems.
oobster Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Anyone remember making crisp-packet badges by putting a crisp-packet under the grill for a few seconds? That was when Golden Wonder were the only crisps you could get!
4Hero Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 << Anyone remember making crisp-packet badges by putting a crisp-packet under the grill for a few seconds? That was when Golden Wonder were the only crisps you could get! >> We used to put the crisp packets on the coal fire to do the same That was the days when green packets meant Cheese and Onion and blue were Plain.
SEEVERS Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 quite happy sitting on the kerb digging at the dirt with an ice lolly stick!..... That's quality Imy....i probably wasted about 2 1/2 years of my childhood doing that. Bikes were as follows:- 1)Budgie 2)Grifter 3)Burner 4)Mongoose 5)Skyway GT(swapped my mate for the above) The hood thing made me p*sh myself laughing... What about "kwenchy kup" tubs jammed in under the brakes on your Grifter to give off what we thought was a motorbike sound as it rubbed on the big chunky(wooden...lol)tyres. How i miss being a kid. Quality post Davie... Del.
col666 Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Remember this? the great custard pie fights and everybody locked in the cage getting sprayed with gunk! Think Lenny Henry started his career on Tiswas too. Col.
iain_spink Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 Really enjoyed that Corsa, great memories. Re. the bikes, I too had a chopper ( Raleigh) but I'm fairly sure that the Chipper was an attempt at a copy by Dawes. Also: We played chap-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us. [/Q We used to play a varation on that called shyte-a-lite. This involved sourcing a suitably soggy doggy doo then wrapping t up in newspaper. Next step was to place it on a doorstep before setting it alight. A quick chap on the door and then leg it to a suitable nearby viewing spot where you could pish yourself with laughter as the house holder attempts to kill the flames by stamping it out, thereby covering his shoes with shyte! Classic fun.
oobster Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 We used to put the glass milk-bottles on folks door-handles then chap & run away - bottle smashed when the occupants opened the door! Or when we camped-out in our tents - get up at 5am and nick folks newspapers & milk from their front doors.
IanJ Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 The little chopper was called the tomahawk! I didn't have one...we were too poor when i were a lad etc but my missus did have one.
col666 Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 There was the 'Chopper' next down was the 'Tomahawk' then the 'Budgie' which was tiny. Remember flying along on one and kept pedalling round the corner, bad move, the pedal hit the deck because i was leaning over causing the back wheel off the ground and me eating tar then going home and my mum wiping the grazes down with dettol...argh!
my93wrx Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 Not long turned the big 30, and that essay at the begining just reminded me i'm getting old But at last being old i can now afford to insure a wrx
fai17 Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 Aye remember those days and i'm only 23... Adidas Kicks.....Ralka sportbags.....
4Hero Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 ahhh, the good old days. Remember the Binatone "games" consul, with 4 games built in to it? Tennis was my favourite And the 48k ZX Spectrum with the rubber keys? Lol, what a machine. Binatone: 1978 Spektrum 48k: 1983
oobster Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 oooo..... we had a ZX Spectrum. And a ZX81 before that.
st3ph3n Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 I had a 128K. It was the business. Had to cram a bit of lego in the DC input to make it work though.
