corsa Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Thought i would share this with some of the elderly members on here;-);-) FOR THOSE BORN BEFORE 1986 According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans. When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops, or wooden Scholls, or black plimsoles and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same. We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this. We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded. We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them. We played elastics and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt! We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones but there were no law-suits. We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents. We played chap-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us. We walked to friends' homes. We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls. We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood (ahhhh the memory!) The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of...They actually sided with the law. This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them. Congratulations! Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good. For those of you who aren't old enough thought you might like to read about us. This my friends, is surprisingly frightening......and it might put a smile on your face: The majority of students in universities today were born in 1986........They are called youth. They have never heard of we are the World, We are the children, and the Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife not Billy Joel. They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena Cherry or Belinda Carlisle. For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam. AIDS has existed since they were born. CD's have existed since they were born. Michael Jackson has always been white. To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance. They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission Impossible are films from last year. They can never imagine life before computers. They'll never have pretended to be the A Team, RedHand Gang or the Famous Five. They'll never have applied to be on Jim'll Fix It or Why Don't You. They can't believe a black and white television ever existed. And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone. Now let's check if we're getting old... 1. You understand what was written above and you smile. 2. You need to sleep more, usually until the afternoon, after a night out. 3. Your friends are getting married/already married. 4. You are always surprised to see small children playing comfortably with computers. 5. When you see teenagers with mobile phones, you shake your head. 6. You remember watching Dirty Den in EastEnders the first time around. 7. You meet your friends from time to time, talking about the good Old days, repeating again all the funny things you have experienced together. 8. Having read this mail, you are thinking of forwarding it to some other friends because you think they will like it too... Yes, you're getting old - but what the heck -we've had fun!!
p1ggm Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 very good post lots of memorys brought up for me

st3ph3n Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Ah that was good. I'm 25 next month and it's been playing on my mind in the last few days with one thing or another that's been going on. I've answered yes to all 8 questions and now I feel slightly concerned. But still! - We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood. That's my favourite. Probably because it reminds me of being in Canada in 1998 visiting a mate who'd emigrated. He was part of the old "gang" who used to participate in riding around in packs of bikes and we managed to recreated it quite nicely out there. 7 of us renting Yamaha Mopeds for 24 hours, me with only a UK Provisional to my name as well. We rode about for almost 24 hours solid on them visiting a mountain bike trail and a bmx track (where I managed 3 feet of air), filling them up with 100 octane race fuel just to see what would happen. Drag racing against a Dodge Charger with the loudest sounding hemi you'll ever hear, and drafting 7 in line down the tallest hill in town. Memories.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 nice one..............i want my old snorkel parka again!!!

col666 Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 great post corsa...got me reminissing(sp?) Remember the raleigh strika? thats what bike i had when i was wee, fake suspension and a big foam seat, weighed a ton too! Used to jam cardboard in the back mudgaurd and annoy all the neighbours flying about thinking i was Barry Sheene! Those were the days, really sad that kids cant go out on their own now. What the hell did we do before mobile phones eh? Used to cycle for miles trying to find your mates...or maybe they were hiding from me!? Col.
andy Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 << That was when a morris marina was a good car >> Having been thrown 30 feet out the back window of a Marina due to the front axle snapping and only around today because there were no trees between my departure from said car and me hitting ground, I'd disagree with your "good car" sentiment.
ally-b Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Aye and white dog-sheight ! what happened to that ? you just had to give one a gentle tap with your 'Stuart brouges' ,'docs' or 'wegians' and they turned to powder And, if I've no put you off yer supper yet . . . . . pink school-dinner custard ... mind you'd fight for the skin ?... we were clatty pigs Nostalgia ain't what it used to be Al.

corsa Posted January 22, 2006 Author Posted January 22, 2006 My first experience of the old style cars was on Islay when my faither said i could ride in the front seat home from the beach. Picture the scene, a Hillman Imp,a 10 yr old sitting in the front seat, dont worry son you dont have to wear a seatbelt. I dont know what made me put it on but trundling along a lonely country road a cow juspms out in front of the car, Faithers reactions (or the Imps brakes) didnt work that well and BANG, hit the coo, destroys the front of the Imp and ensures i wear a seatbelt everytime now. My bike was a Chopper Does anybody remember the female version of the chopper? the Harrier. Spacedust, remember that ? Yer aunti/grannie licking her hankie and wiping your face!!! Do you find yourself doing things your dad would do??? I think that is the sign of getting older.
G.T. Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 ah remember the days im 35 this year and most of that is spot on << TextAye and white dog-sheight ! what happened to that ? >> i dont ever remember kicking white dog shecht about i had a grifter before my 1st bmx always remeber building ramps and seeing how many of your mates you could jump pver why dont you was a quality program fave sweeties from those days has to be splicers and texans good fun remembering your childhood, do feel quite old now p.s who remembers stealing folks strawberries and peas etc from there gardens the chase was always the best bit quality
billyboy Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 And you got the belt at school. Can you imagine the wee hoodies and neds gettin the belt? They would soon go running home to their mummy's then. At work the apprentices argue with the service manager. In my day you got a size nine up the backside and greased if you were cheeky, and you didn't moan about it.
G.T. Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 oh aye remember the belt oucha youth of today has no respect for elders in ma day you wouldnt speak back to an adult as you would have got a swift boot up the hoopla imagine that today jees remember the fuzz taking you home to your folks, that was worse than getting lifted cos you knew you were in for a hiding
scoobykev Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 << My bike was a Chopper Does anybody remember the female version of the chopper? the Harrier >> i had a chopper, heard somebody on the radio the other day call the female version a chipper, dont remember it though. the new one doesn't have a proper gear stick either, health and safety p*sh, imagine thinking it's unsafe to ride your bike without holding on to the handlebars, how are you supposed to use your catapult then?? And we had proper winters then, i remember being snowed in and off school for a fortnight, spent the whole time building igloos, the snow was 8" deep around the house, snow ploughs and blowers couldn't get near us.
jcscoob Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 I could hardly rember anything, something must have happend in my wayward teens But a wee read of all they things and it all comes flooding back cheers for that corsa Kev i can aslo rember making iglos, used to use kitchin basin as a mould for the blocks Im now 31 but still think im 14 !
billyboy Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 My Dad had a mk3 Ford Zephyr. It weighed about 2 tons, had tail fins,no seat belts and a front bench seat.Column change 3 speed automatic and a bright red vinyl interior 13 years he got out of it.AUS 469B in platignum grey.Cracking car it was,he almost cried when the scrappy drove it away.
