Historic Moment at Knockhill

Work has commenced on resurfacing of the entire length of the circuit.

Circuit owner Derek Butcher stated "In the past few years the actual circuit has been used more than ever with the success of Gift Voucher driving experiences and the extra traffic that this brings adding to a busy motor sport programme which includes SMRC and KDMC Championships, the British Touring Car Championship and British Superbike Championship plus Rallycross, Stock Cars and Rally events."

Added Derek "All of this traffic takes its toll on the track and the investment will ensure that Knockhill continues to offer competitors a first class surface to race on whilst maintaining the high standards expected by the UK's premier racing events."

The tarmac being laid is "Prix Mat", a specialised mix which has proved successful at many top circuits in the UK.

In addition to the vital resurfacing a significant amount of widening is also taking place with an additional 3 metres being added to the width of the track on the inside from the rock face just after the stock car loop to half way down SEAT Curves. Additional widening will also be added to the inside of Scotsman Corner and Clarks.

Scottish Motor Racing veteran and Knockhill's Operations Manager Ian Forrest who has blasted a Radical Sportscar around the circuit for the last two seasons gave his view on what the changes will bring to drivers:

"For a start, there will be room for 3 abreast racing on the run up to SEAT Curves and the entry speeds into SEAT could be as much as 20 mph faster !!"

Added Ian "I think drivers will have to adopt a new technique from SEAT Curves to Scotsman Corner, but with it the lap times should tumble. These major changes will give Scotland that much needed quick corner."

Spectators too will notice the difference on entering the circuit as the roadway has been widened and fully resurfaced creating a very smart approach to Scotland's National Motorsport Venue

Any upgrading can only be a good thing. If the track is wider and the corners faster. less chance of me doing nasty (expensive) damage if I mess up.

And the chances of them improving the surfaces(both roads and parking) around the track for spectators is........face-icon-small-sad.gif

My P1 still sports a scuff on the front bumper caused by about a foot drop in one of the 'Car Parks' around Knockhill.

There's loads of Opencast sites in South Lanarkshire and Ayrshire that are either being restored or due to be restored soon. They're re-shaping the land obviously, but my requests to turn them into racetracks has fallen on deaf ears.
