Johnny50 Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Right, it`s looking like tomorrow is my last day at work. Getting laid off... Currently in I.T, have 10 years experience, but no formal qualifications. I`m struggling to decide wether to try and get back into I.T, or do a complete change. Now going by how many qualifications people have these days, i`m not sure i would stand a chance getting back into I.T. Any advice Guys and Gals ?
ScoobyAndy Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Sorry to hear it mate. What do you fancy if you were to change??
Johnny50 Posted November 3, 2005 Author Posted November 3, 2005 Got a few options that i`m considering. Have always fancied getting my Heavy Goods Licence, so may consider that. Cab licence...something i would consider, but intial layout for a cab would be a problem. Fire Brigade, although they`re not recruiting at the moment. Police Force, always something i`ve secretly fancied, but not sure i have the brains for the exams.
zeolite Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 How would your wife feel about the gigolo option? Commiserations about getting laid off mate
Johnny50 Posted November 3, 2005 Author Posted November 3, 2005 PMSL at the Gigilo... Is a good option, but would like a career that lasts longer than the adverts of Corrie.
ScoobyAndy Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Some not bad options there. Ive got my HGV licence, dont youse it that often though only thing that would stop me persuing a career down that route is the way the governments trying to drive road haulage out with its fuel taxes, drivers hours restrictions etc.. The hours one is the one that annoys me the most. You can drive a car or van all day long if you want, get as tired as you want doing it, yet do they introduce any restrictions for them?? NO!!!!! On the plus side, theres that fantastic sense of being high up and able to nosey at anything you want (summertime, cabrios, iam sure you get my drift ), plus theres plenty jobs out there
Gumball Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Johnny PM me what you do and what your looking for. My company are always looking for good guys with experience. after they started me they decided they wanted to go back to emplying clever people with experience before anyone beats me to it.
Johnny50 Posted November 3, 2005 Author Posted November 3, 2005 Problem with the HGV is, a lot are asking for experience aswell... Obviously the hours aren`t 9-5, but i accept that, but it`s something i would enjoy, especially longer distance. Have also thought about pub management.
st3ph3n Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Just play poker on t'internet. It's the only way fly.
ScoobyAndy Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Your right there, but theres ways round that small problem. I know alot of hauliers, some that are looking and i can try and "pull some strings" The fact its not 9-5 is the beauty of it id say. Though i wouldnt fancy doing any continental work, id be locked up for trying to stop illegal imigrants trying to get into the country Edited to add. I touch goats m8
Johnny50 Posted November 3, 2005 Author Posted November 3, 2005 Andy, thanks for the PM matey. Chris, will Pm you in a moment. Thanks.
Johnny50 Posted November 3, 2005 Author Posted November 3, 2005 Cheers Andy. So in the meantime, i`ll consider anything at all, just to keep the pennies rolling in.
RS Grant Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Sorry to hear that Mr 50.... I'll give you 500 sheets for the Wagon, that should tide you over for a while. Cheers, Grant
dougster Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Johnny, the agencies are crying out for drivers. I got my HGV and HIAB certs this year and could pick up the phone tomorrow and get a shift. Hours are getting more limited but drivers are still being pressurised by companys to work over their tacho limits. There will be plenty of agnceis out your way.
Johnny50 Posted November 4, 2005 Author Posted November 4, 2005 Knew i could count on you Grant. Make it 550 and i`ll consider it.
ScoobyAndy Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Dougster. Whats involved in the HIAB cert? Iam just about ready to start hunting down work on a lorry for over the winter. You driving class 1 or 2? Johnny i'll make it 600
Johnny50 Posted November 4, 2005 Author Posted November 4, 2005 Thanks Doug. Forgot you had sat yours earlier this year. How are you finding it ? Andy...you and Grant argue it between you...i`ll just pocket the highest bidder. Although....dont think it`s suited for Knockhill....the leather is a bit slidy !
ScoobyAndy Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 << Thanks Doug. Forgot you had sat yours earlier this year. How are you finding it ? dougster Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Class 2 and have worked with a vehicle movements company which let me drive a HUGE variety of vehicles from the most powerful MAN tractor units to double deckers to Reliance prison vans (all new and on trade plates) The HIAB involves a couple of weekends traning with a variety of truck mounted hydraulic cranes (brilliant fun). You also need the CITB Health and Safety certficate. Worked more recently with Geodis (through agency) driving a Scania curtain side delivering palleted goods thoughout Scotland. Back to good old vehicle rental for a while just now though.
RS Grant Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 << Johnny i'll make it 600 >> Damn you.... I'm out.... Cheers, Grant
Johnny50 Posted November 4, 2005 Author Posted November 4, 2005 Still sounds good Doug. Did you get your class 1 ? Or whatever it is these days ! As long as there`s everyday work, then i`d be happy doing that.
D4WGY Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 << Now going by how many qualifications people have these days, i`m not sure i would stand a chance getting back into I.T. >> I'm sure you'd have no problems mate!
