Knocklink help

Got my knocklink fitted a couple of weeks ago

They said they'd set the sensitivity to what they thought was best, but to me it seems really sensitive.

What's the deal with the sensitivity setting?

How do you change it?

How do you know what it should/shouldn't be at?

I always ran mine of maximum sensitivity. There's an adjuster on the unit (little yellow turn screw thingy) - unless they've dismantled it and hid the unit behind the dash.

Ideally they should be adjusted with the aid of det cans or at least something else that can relate the activity to just background noise or actual det.

how do you know it is being supersensitive and not picking up det????

have you had the car mapped with someone wearing det cans????

i have always used mine on max sensitivity better safer than sorry.

I don't know for definite that it is being supersensitive....thats why I'm asking about it!

I just think that my driving is pretty tame compared to some others...and it seems to be picking up a lot

God knows what its gonna be like when Adam gets home and starts driving it again face-icon-small-shocked.gif

Fee - what other mods do you have? I fitted mine a month or so ago when I had an induction kit on mine. Since then gone back to the standard airbox and panel filter and seeing 1 green max. Cars fueling better as well according to my AFR.

Its best to run at max. sensitivity so I've been told. I run Millers Octane Plus in mine as well.

Right...starting to worry a bit now then

Car is standard

If I'm sitting at 90mph on the motorway (which I obiously dont do cos its illegal) and so much as touch the accelerator it can go up to red

Booster...can't remember the amount....it says a bottle can do 6 tanks, so 1/6 of a bottle for normal day to day driving...more if I'm going on longer journeys / rr day etc

should I try using more? will that help?

If it's only just started showing reds or indeed any activity, then somethings changed.

It could be down to the fuel your using or not enough NF.

As a quick check, disconnect the boost control solenoid and try the car again. Because the car will be using less boost, you should have less activity. If it's still going bananas, then something else is going on.

As far as I remember its being doing that since the knocklink was fitted

I only drive to and from work during the week, and its fine .....I'm not really driving fast though...

but as soon as I try to boot it...it will go to amber

I just dont think it should be doing that....its not like I'm totally ragging it

The car is running low boost....about 14psi i think...

thanks for the advice....absolutely no idea how to do that though!

I had the car on the rollers at the last RR day and they said it was running with no problems.....

does anyone who was there know if they checked the fuelling of the cars when they were on?

that was before the knocklink was fitted

When you're getting amber. Is this at high(ish) revs?

If so, this is probably just background noise from the engine.

It sounds like you're getting amber though the moment you touch the throttle.

Add a little more NF and see if that helps. Again it sounds like the NF is added as a "guesstimate", so it could be there isn't enough in the tank at the moment.

Sorry bout the "disconnect the solenoid bit". Didn't know what you knew about the car!

They should have checked the fuelling through a wide band sensor (up the exhaust) when on the rollers.

It might just be engine noise or the sensor might not be fitted correctly, its might be a lot of things but I'd get it checked out.

Also, do you add the NF before or after you fill up the tank? If its after the booster might just be sitting in the u-bend instead of being flushed into the tank.

IIRC the guys @ Dastek do check the mixture when they are running the cars... I'm sure Gerry told me that mine was running fine too. Hope its nothing serious, I would maybe try banging in a bit more OB and seeing if that helps, but then, I'm mechanically/technically dumb so its probably best not to listen to me!! face-icon-small-smile.gif

Having a re-read of what you've told us so far, it would appear that the car was on the rollers and was fine, then you added a knocklink after and now you're seeing activity on it.

If the knocklink was fitted and there has been no activity seen at all (or not noticed) and now there is, then the variable here, (if the car hasn't been modified since) is the fuel the car is running on.

Does that make any sense?

But yes, as said on here. probably worth a quick check by someone local to you that knows about these things.

It might just be my wishful thinking...but I'm sure it must just be the knocklink!!!!

I had it on the rollers and they said it was running perfect...I got the knocklink fitted 5 days after

Still running it on Optimax and RF Race....but I did have more in the tank that day as I was taking it on the rollers.....so might try putting more in....

I put it in after I've filled it up to....so will try putting it in first

I'll take it out for a long drive tonight and see if any of that helps....if not I'll get it looked at

Would be worth checking your ECU error codes and see if it's throwing up a MAF or Lambda failure as well. Of the 2 it would be the MAF as the Lambda's not used to control the fuelling on boost.

If its running lean that can cause the det you might be seeing on the KL. I'd give Dastek a call and see if they've got anything to say on the fuelling.

I get an amber sometimes on changeing up from 3rd-4th and 4th-5th but thats down to transmission noise (I think)

How does the car actually 'feel'. When my MAF started misbehaving it was very lumpy under acceleration so was easy to spot something was iffy. I did get a few red flashes at high rpm, but generally the activity on the Knocklink could be felt as well.

As Alan has said, fuel quality can vary from pump to pump and that should give you a quick indication if it's related or something else.

Or just do what I did and remove the feckin thing and stop worrying about it face-icon-small-wink.gif

Neil ........

im the same, having just had power fc fitted and mapped by andy f he said that i may get knocklink activity on a gear change due to transmission noise. so im glad its not just me

Car feels fine.....

I wouldnt be worrying at all if I didnt have the bloody thing!!!!

I'll have a look tonight and see how it goes

boost control solenoid - where do I find that?

ECU error codes - how do I check them?
