Exhaust Wrap Needed!

Guys

I'm going to wrap my downpipe with exhaust wrap but I have 3 questions.

1. What's the best Exhaust Wrap to use?

2. Where can I get this stuff at a decent price?

3. How much of the stuff do I need?

It's a Stainless Steel twin dump downpipe btw.

Get the 1 inch stuff

Its in a roll, canny mind what length, but its around £47 posted i think

Get two hose clips or Jubilee clips,whatever you want to call them.

One to clamp the wrap at the top of the pipe and one to clamp it at the bottom where you finish off

You need about 7m at the most to do a downpipe.

Got some spare in the garage if needed!

3mm stuff is available from Think Auto very cheaply - and priced per metre too. I shopped around alot before i bought and eventually found some that was marginally cheaper than the Think Auto product. However, quality was severly lacking and if i were to do it again i'd use the Think Auto stuff.

Jubilee clips and locking wire is the proper way to secure it. Should get you a result something like this...

Then you can always paint it as well and get this...

A word of warning Gordon, this stuff is positively horrible to work with. To actually apply to the pipework the Cooltek wrap is soft and easy to work but the amount of nasty fibres that become airborne is scary. Good ventilation and dust mask is 100% necessary.

PS: I'd buy 10m for the downpipe. I'd estimate i used about 15m on mine but i layed it on real thick!

10m for a downpipe? WTF?

That REALLY is overdoing it M8, I've wrapped about 9 downpipe now and have only ever used 7m at the most. Stainless Steel Tiewraps are perfect for securing the wrap. I have 2 cars, right now, that have their wrap fitted like this, secured this way, been on the cars for 21/23 months and not a single issue with the CoolTek wrap.

Just because it is a bit thicker doesn't mean its better! Will it protect to the same temps?

You damn right you're mad! You looked as if you've just saw Jordan naked or something with that smile of yours! I know you get excited when you see someone you know but come on! It's only me! I drove down that road that night thinking "who was that guy? Do I know anybody with an OLD ROVER?" It only dawned on me when I got home and went onto SIDC and discovered that you've sold your Sub .

That must be the tidiest garage I've seen in my life! It's so organised, like everything is all round you so it's easier to find! How the hell do you fit your car in it? Been following up your website and your car seems to be coming on quite a bit. Just out of curiousity, why did you paint the exhaust after the wrap? I take it that the stuff your using is high temperature paint? Do you think you can go OTT by painting the exhaust with temperature paint, wrap it using 10m of exhaust wrap and then paint it again with high temperature paint just for good measure?

Russ, chill out dude - you're home on Thursday remember.

I suggested 10m to Gordon as (in general) the stuff is available in 5/10/15m etc etc rolls . Like i said, i laid it on thick when i did mine. Anything left over was just going to be forgotten about in the garage so i may as well get the good of it.

With regards the quality of different wraps: the Cooltek is advertised at 1.5mm nominal thickness, i measured mine at 1mm at best. I'm not saying the 3mm Think Auto stuff is any more efficient (it's not worth the hassle to prove either way) but for the tiny bit extra it costs i'll be giving it a go rather than the Cooltek next time. Gordon could also buy exactly 7m of this as it's sold per metre.

PS: if locking wire is good enough for the Super Puma you're flying home on on Thursday, it's good enough for the Scoob. I'm sure they're fine in general but i prefer to avoid using cable ties.

Gordon, it's my Dad's garage. Mine will be a world apart from that... once it's built. The next step is knitting wooly jumpers for the headers/turbo and downpipe.

You need to buy a full roll, 2" x 50 feet at a cost of around £50. It is called DEI wrap and has a sewn in stitch to show the correct overlap. Apply damp but not wet. Use tie wire, (Goodridge) every 2 or three spirals. You will use most of a roll.

Mine comes from Nimbus Motorsports Products, Driffield, East Yorks.
