mctwistuk
Have been reading a post in sent about police clamping down on excessively loud exhaust own outh. Just wondered what people thoughts wre nd if anyone in Scotland has had similar experience regarding exhaust? From why I can tell if it is louder than standard it is illegal according to the thread. johnmacdonald
Think I'll be OK - only have the PPP exhaust system plus resonator section replaced with a Scoobyworld sourced straight through with integrated performance silencer... Link to comment
mctwistuk
It is just something that seems to be getting more and more common. I don't understand how it is monitored Link to comment
ccrien
Down our way it seems there are local campaigns every so often when residents complain to police, guess its mostly the kids in corsas and the like, so they are out to make a targeted mark, so to speak, to fix a specific problem and show the resident taxpayers a presence. Not aware of anything more sinister than that. Link to comment
corsa
I spoke to a couple of traffics about this, its only if people complain about the noise then you are breaching the peace, where the old bill take an interest is when they come and say hello and have a look and see you have a full 3" straight through system with a snakehead downpipe, full de-cat no resonators and a roger clark motorsport back box. Then its emmisions check and MOT time again ! But im ok cos ive not got one of them LOL Link to comment
ccrien
The snakehead down pipe comment reminds me of 15years ago I had a Daihatsu Sportrak for towing the boat (Forester is 200% better on sand). Great little revvy 1600 engine and I bought a fantastic 4 into 2 into 1 manifold and headers from AUstralia to replace the cast iron manifold and single down pipe. Not to do with noisy exhausts but what the hell! Link to comment

highlandflyer
Unless you're drawing attention around town you shouldn't have a problem though legally any louder/larger bore than standard is illegal! (and will in theory get a rectification notice). So use of common sense is all that's required as well as not have a stupidly loud exhaust etc Link to comment
doogz
i had 3" exhaust with a 5" exit and have been followed a few times by the traffic police and never got pulled, i was deliberatly keeping the revs down, as i think if i was driving normaly i think i might have got pulled, got a h&s back box now which is slightly quieter and looks more standard. scoobywho
Aftermarket backboxes are legal as long as they bear an e mark, and many have the ability for a bung to be fitted, there is no decibel test in the mot for cars, motorcyles on the otherhand are a different story, a loud deep tone is preffered to a high pitched scream endcans must have bsau markings and also be stamped for road use or not. The road traffic act states they must have the markings, but if you are handy with a dremmel then fire in and do it yourself. Its then down to the mot tester Link to comment
scoobywho
The sva test states on import a vehicle can have up to 140db as well Link to comment
corsa
Ive got a noise meter which is fun seeing how loud i can get it LOL I did get a higher reading at rallyday than a group B SWB Audi Quattro :-0 Davie Link to comment
Bryan d
I got flagged down in Huntly and told to go home coss ma car was to throaty and it was 7pm had to do it as not wanting the hassle Link to comment
scoobywho
Its too deep a noise to affect decibel levels anyway unless you are reving it Link to comment
doogz
just tried the iphone app on mine and it peaked at 104db Link to comment

corsa
Doogz, what did you take the RPM up to to obtain that reading ? Link to comment
lewisscoob
Is that dBA or peak? Do we know which the boys in blue apply? I'm thinking it should be dBA. According to noise at work regs you should have ear protection for over 85dBA... Link to comment
corsa
Should be 4k RPM a metre away at a 45 degree angle to get the right readings. D Link to comment
