Megy Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Hi all, I am exploring the possibilities of swapping my WRX (hawkeye) for a newer Hatch STi but not sure which way to go. Today I had a look at a nice 330S and loved the way the car felt to drive, but I am aware that the normal STi can be a few grand cheaper. I am just looking for peoples thoughts on whether to save a few more pennies and look to get the 330S or whether the normal STi is not too different in the real world. Of course I could always get the PPP fitted if I decide to if/when I want the additional power. Appreciate anyones thoughts on this, thanks guys.

Another hatch convert... well... almost *lol* Handling wise, the 330S is no different... a few more toys and the PPP but otherwise little difference. If you're going down the modding path, I'd stick to standard STI... it ain't short on grunt, although if you want a more "complete" package and don't intend going any further, 330S is perhaps the better option.

monsterenergy Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 I went to look at the 330s when I was buying my hatch. I ended up getting a normal STI hatch and have upgraded it a bit myself. Mine came with the same 18" Prodrive alloys that the 330s came with. Since then I added a built in Kenwood SatNav/DVD, PPP kit and front lip spoiler (and a subwoofer in the boot lol). The 330s comes with Recaro seats that me or the missus didnae find comfy at all - much preferred standard STi ones. And I wasn't really bothered about the blacked oot rear windows. Fitting the PPP kit was well worth it. Getting the torque lower in the revs is good. After reading about possible piston problems I didn't want to risk a different ecu or invalidate the warranty so went for Subaru approved Prodrive. Reckon the front lip spoiler is the dogs bawz too. Next on my list will be the alloy exhaust finishers and trying to source an SPT boost gauge. Anyone here any idea about where to get one of these gauges? Overall - happy with the way I've gone about things and don't think the cost is much different from if I'd got the 330s. Hatches are the business

Don't want another white hatch in aberdeen lol I've had my sti mapped & a full decat & filter, it pulls like a train! Not sure how a 330 would compare to it but i love my hatch!

If so, saw ye in Anderson Drive Shell one day - nice motor - nae sure about the Monster Energy hoodie though lol I've got the dark grey metallic - only seen one other in Aberdeen, then the missus says she saw one and it had "shiny bits where the exhausts were and think it had more writing on the back"... so have to get those exhaust finishers ordered up pronto to keep up with the Jones' lol. Assume it was a 330s she saw, that's actually one thing I didn't like aboot the 330s was the cheapy looking 330s badge on the back.

Hatches are the business I agree - I have added as much as I can from the Subaru options list to mine and it is a great all round car. One point on PPP - not sure if it is still available or if it can still be had? People will tell you there are better & cheaper options (and there are) BUT PPP protects your warranty and is dealer friendly in every way...(and often insurer friendly too). Brian.
StrikE Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Both cars are great improvements, the Hatch sti can have the ppp fitted & keep warranty. Hatch 330s is a wee bit more than just a ppp fitted. Knowing now the difference if you can afford the extra few £££ then the 330s is the way to go.
r20grm Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Yip that's me! What's wrong with my hoody? lol Was speaking to a guy in my street thats just bought a grey one from somewhere in turriff, that colour is common as muck now, ha ha.

I got my PPP from Ian Grieve just about 6 weeks ago - had to wait a while for Subaru to get them one but only a few weeks. Fitted while I waited and burble-burble-burble I was on my way. For insurance just called up Elephant and they topped up my policy for aboot £30 a year or something.
salsa-king Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) keyless start is really kool. Racaro seats really nice. 330bhp out the can is brill. and as a 330s is listed on insurance 'on line' quote sites.. its quite easy to insure too. the radio/sat nav is very good. as a friend said to me, 'you go to a meet.. everyone has the STi so no one looks at your car, you go with a 330s and everyone goes oooooooooooh a 330s, not many of those about'. lol I may be biased Edited February 22, 2011 by salsa-king

That's different to mine - my ECU was sent to Prodrive for 3 days as that was how it was being done, specific to the car - they must now have placed a map on an ECU for swapping...

Megy Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 Just a quick question for you guys with both the STi and the 330S, what are the good points of the relevant stereos, mainly, are they able to control an iPod? Is the touch screen one in the 330S a CD player too? Looking forward to hearing more about either. Also, is anyone in or around either the Dunfermline or Aberdeen with an STi or 330S areas and wouldnt mind meeting up for a chat about them and a good look around etc? Ian
salsa-king Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 the 330s radio also has a single disc CD/DVD player... its' great. the RED/YELLOW/WHITE Av connections in the centre cubby hole, I use with an MP3/4 player, you can't control the MP3 from the screen, but volume is still with the steeringwheel etc. I just put the MP3 on shuffle... job done.
StrikE Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 You can also load a single DVD disk with MP3's so hundreds of cd's in the one place [330s]
monsterenergy Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 If ye buy a standard STi hatch ye can replace the double-din head unit with a full touch screen sat nav/dvd and have yer ipod or a hard drive in yer glove box - controllable from the touch screen
