jim dbm Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 right, i am in the process of selling my immaculate low mileage mica red impreza turbo, and i took a call from a guy from kent during the week, lots of questions etc usual stuff, then calls me next day and says he is flying up sunday morning can i pick him up from the airport, fine no problem. so i get up this morning, pick him up, come home, leave him to look round the car for ages, make him tea, he finally asks how flexible i am on the price, first time he mentioned it so i said im not. so he offers 250 less than im asking, i say no. he wanders around the car again for ages and says nothing, so i say look ill knock 50 off and thats it, iv just taxed it and motd it. he says no, and where can he get a cab!!!!!!!!! so i phone him one and off he goes. wtf!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant stress how mint the car is, and he doesnt buy it for the sake of 200 and pays a fortune for a taxi and another flight home!!! speechless.
wrx kenny Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 (edited) dont get that why come all the way from kent and waste everyones time kenny Edited October 17, 2010 by wrx kenny
smallcatalunya Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 what teabags did you use.................lol
jim dbm Posted October 17, 2010 Author Posted October 17, 2010 im thinking he was a bit mental actually. i opened the bonnet and all he did was look at it, didnt even check the oil filler cap. why didnt he talk money with me before he booked his flight!!!! i would of told him not to bother. just dont get it. wasnt a very chatty bloke either, didnt have much to say at all. good riddence!!
euan_r Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 unbelievable after the costs/time of travel for sake of 200 quid. cant have been that interested unless you get a phone call in next wee while.
mystery machine Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Aaaaah, the joys of private selling - always a magnet for total windae lickers. I had one guy phone me up the day after buying my car to ask me: "OK mate - what's the score with the engine overheating? Eh?! " I was quite surprised at this because it had never overheated in all the time I'd owned it. "What's the reading on the temperature gauge?", I asked. "Well it's aboot haufway... but it's no' that - I popped the bonnet, put my hand on the block and it was RED HOT mate!". Did you make it clear in your advert that you weren't accepting offers?

Richie Cross Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Mmm...I'm thinking that if that was me I'd had flown up expecting to pay the asking price! Try haggling and anything off would be a bonus! Just means you'll sell it to someone else who it'll mean more to
lewisscoob Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 I'd have told him to poke his cab up his ar$e! Jesus MM, just shows you get some real nuggets out there. Imagine the block getting hot, I wonder how on earth that could have happened - pleb!
Gumball Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Thats a strange one. Maybe he began to mull over in his mind in flight............this has cost me £200 to get hear and £50 quid home, so I will try and recoup that money? 250/2 = 125 minus the cost to collect him. Hes probably a goat lover
scooby222 Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 no danger that he was scouting the car for later? come back at night and liberate it? does seem very very odd so just a worry
maddogsx Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 no danger that he was scouting the car for later? come back at night and liberate it? does seem very very odd so just a worry Just exactly my thought's either that or it was a dummy run to cover something else if he thought he had a blue light shadow. I'd be tempted to remove tghe AFM or some other quite vital part anytime I left it for the next while or so, and either a heavy chain or something across driveway. (and a few handily placed items....baseball bat within reach at all times)
patsy Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 I had similar with a wee 'go faster' ford puma I was selling a few years back. A guy and his daughter travelled from the Highlands to Edinburgh and looked around the car, which was clean as a whistle. They were very pleased with it and rich daddy then tried to get £500 of the price. He whacked out a big wad of cash and laid it on the coffe table! I pushed it back to his side and told him I wasn't taking anything off the price. He then put another £100 down like something of a game show, counting out five £20 notes slowly and adding them to the pile. As the car was priced to sell quick and I could honestly have advertised it for a few hundred more. He put his cash away and told me he was sorry he's wasted our time travelling all that way and off they went heading home to the Highlands, Nairn direction I think. I was a bit annoyed with his cheek. Then 2 hours later they arrived back at the door. Gave me my asking price and f**ked off in under 10 minutes. Just goes to show what a spoiled 25 year old daughter can do! Then I put his 4k towards buying my scoob...
ciaranrb5 Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Rather bizzare to come all that way and not buy it. Youv'e not realy lost anything by him not buying it though so no need to be mad. I sold a MK2 valver golf in 2002 put it up for sale for £1800. Was by no means a minter but had full leather air con and a few sought after extras. I had put it in the paper not realy expecting much intrest. Had not even washed the car just wanted to see if anybody would actually phone. I had 23 phone calls the first day. Guy wanted to come and see it that evening i stated that i was actually still using it and it needed washed and all my stuff taken out. He said it was ok. Anyway get home from college and the guys already there He has a look around no test drive and says I will give you £2k (£200 over asking price) if i can take it away now. Strangely enough I emptied the personal contents of my car onto the ground sorted out the paper and off he went. Heard afterwards that he wrote the car off about 3 weeks later. Sometimes it's just your luck with private sales, im sure if it's as mint as you say it will sell soon
davey l wrx Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 Been there before... I moved to Cyprus for a while thanks to my job and needed to sell my car before i left. it was a Fiat Punto (i know....), eibach suspension, 17'' alloys, M3 mirrors, custom fitted pioneer stereo system, full fiat service history. Plus the original wheels and suspension that came off plus to save me moving it all the polish, wax, tyre dressing, pumps, tools the works. As i needed the car till just before i left it was £500 under the book price in Glasses guide and the car was immaculate.... Had some kid turn up and try to knock £1000 off the price, came back with his dad who tried to haggle again. Once the book price was pointed out to them and all the extra kit they finally (after 2 hours of crap) agreed to the price i had it up for. When he collected the car his friends mondeo estate was full to overflowing with all the extra stuff i basically gave away with it!!!!! Should have charged him more. Some people are just chancers.
G.Mac Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 He does sound a bit of a weirdo. When I was selling my Scoob a few years back I was asking 16K and was expecting to be knocked down to about 15K, had one guy phone up and offer me 10.5 WTF :redcard:a few choice words were said and then I hung up on him , hence I still own the car I have never sold a car, I have either given them away, stuck in in the scrap yard or traided them in, after my one and only go at selling a car I dont think I will bother in the future. I cant understand how some pople can buy and sell cars for fun Graeme

You must have the patience of a saint, I'm afraid that if it were me then good ol dad and simple son would have been 'asked to go away', in a rather abrupt manner, I have no patience for folk like that.

Haha i knew what it was worth and i knew they didn't have a clue when the dad got down and knocked on the sills..... 'sounds fairly solid to me'!!!!! I think it was after i'd text my neighbour and asked him to call and play along... then did the 'I've got someone here looking at it now' trick and forced their hand, if not i'd have shown them the door. With instructions not to return unless they had the full asking price.
marko72 Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 (edited) Strange man indeed. Sold a Metro GTI I owned bout 1995. Put it in autotrader, a few calls. One from a guy who wanted to take the car to Ireland, strip it out and rally it, offered me half what I was asking. Then call from guy who seemed very keen, lots of questions, good while on the fone then commented on the decent price I was asking and asked if he could get a blo*job as well for the price. Then all the laughing etc from the fannies in the background. A round of verbal jousting ensued. Waste of time. Eventually sold it to a guy of Indian, Pakistani origin or thereabouts. A doctor I think. I took the car up to Glasgow the night before ready to take it round to his the next day, only to have some c**t try and break in to it. Dented round the doorlock, some scraps, removed the indicator cover etc. Phoned him, he said its cool bring it round. I did and we went out in it. Everything going fine and he starts to tell me about the fact he's a bit of a christian, well quite a christian in fact. He drives the car for a bit then looks at me and says, you know as he's a mega christian he would expect to be treated the same, so is there anything wrong with the car. There wasnt so i said no. Back to his, checking all the docs etc, starts to tell me about how his life was messed up, how he ended up dangling off a balcony in some middle eastern city somewhere ready to end it all, when a voice told him to go back in where he told me about these giant golden feet that appeared in his room, that were the feet of god, all glowing and melting, so that was him all saved. Wow I was thinking, im getting freaked out. Each to their own but.... I go off home with a nice cheque and bring the car up with my dad the next week. Both of us invited in and we are sitting there and im thinking please dont start, but he did. Suffice to say I ushered my poor dad out after he explained to us that prostitutes in Glasgow earn about 50k a year but dont see much off it for the drugs and pimps, and how some guys like to inflict fear on them by putting guns in their mouths, just to see the look on their faces, all the while doing the 2 fingers in the mouth gun type gesture. Thats the only car ive ever sold. Enough was enough. Edited October 18, 2010 by marko72
mystery machine Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 That's a belter, Marko - takes all sorts, eh? Here's a telephone conversation that took place between my mate, who had advertised his old Escort in the paper for about £150, and a caller answering the ad... "Hello, I'm phoning about the car - is it still for sale?" "Yes, it is." "OK, would you consider part exchange?" "Erm, hadn't thought of that... what are you offering to exchange it for?" "A fridge freezer?" "OK...... just one question." "Yes?" "Can you suggest how I might get to my work in the morning, in a fridge freezer?!!!"
jim dbm Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 lol. well i had a rather lengthy email from another tyre kicker, asked loads of questions which i responded to, he then phones me a few days later and we chat about the car, i answer all his questions, he says he will come down this weekend to see it ,he is from aberdeen. guess what. never heard from him again. that was last weekend. so why email me and then phone me when u have no intention of buying it?? really annoys me, some people have nothing better to do.
subarucraig Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 hope your going to change the tyres before you sell car they must be well worn by now Don't get people asking loads of questions then not hearing from them again this happened when i was selling a £5oo pound van i mean it stop and started was taxed and mot'd for 6 months nbut people kept phoning asking stupid questions lol
Ovv Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 i'd have it if I didnt already own your old blue one mate, pictures in the FS section look mint.
jim dbm Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 cheers yes it is mint, but the market seems to be very very slow.
