Rheid Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Siince I can't get V-power at the moment I'm looking for advice on octane boosters. Most likely have to be from Halfords as its close by - I've had the yellow light on for the last 25 miles so there can't be much left! From their website it looks like the options are NOS Octane Boost Formula Street or STP Power Boost Fuel Aditive or Millers Petrol Power Eco Max. Any thoughts? Thanks, Neil
Frank_STI Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I always found Prolong Octane booster to be the best
thefastone Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Its millers that I use, but I forget which bottle it is though...
Big 'D' Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Prolong or Nitrous Formula (NF) seem to do the job Cheers Iain
stuarted Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 NF all the way. Alyn at ASP Trading does a good price on 5 bottles
bobbyc Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Always use the Prolong Octane Booster, can get it in tablet form as well now, for central region guy's Dunc usually stocks it up at Hypertech
Frank_STI Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 why not temporarily use tesco's 99ron and take it easy??
Rheid Posted March 30, 2010 Author Posted March 30, 2010 Thanks for all the replies guys, most helpful and in an ideal world I would go with the Prolong. However as I've probably only got 5 or so miles worth of fuel left it's a no go this time. Car's a daily driver and I need it tomorrow so mail orders also out. Halfords have the Millers in stock and as it's only a mile or so away and next to a petrol station that's what I'm going to go for. Millers say it adds 2 points to existing octane rating so I assume that if I fill up with normal 97RON super and add the booster then that should put it up to 99RON? Irrespective, I won't be giving the car any stick until I can get back onto V-power, if they ever get around to re-stocking it. Thanks, Neil
Rheid Posted March 30, 2010 Author Posted March 30, 2010 why not temporarily use tesco's 99ron and take it easy?? Don't think I'd make it to the nearest Tesco to be honest.
Spaceman Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 why would you have to take it easy on the tesco99 Frank
Frank_STI Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I've had bad experiences with 99 in my scooby, used it 2 twice, both time engine management light on (first time i wasn't sure if it was the fuel), however this could have been bad luck with some poor grade fuel and bare in mind my scooby wasn't exactly standard. From then on, the scooby only ever saw V-power.
gus the bus Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 (edited) why would you have to take it easy on the tesco99 Frank Been using it in the RA most of the time since i got it in June 2008 with no problems Edited March 31, 2010 by Gus the Bus
neill54 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Anything wrong with bp ultimate and booster as I'm getting bit unstuck too? Neil
gus the bus Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Anything wrong with bp ultimate and booster as I'm getting bit unstuck too?Neil Wouldnt have thought there would be a problem Neil as the correct mix would give you 100 Ron Gus PS did you get the exhaust on!!?
Spaceman Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 a used tesco 99 in both classics and the blob sti and they all ran smoother on the tesco than the vpower with more miles to the gallon. the M3 liked the tesco too.
Frank_STI Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Funny you should mention that because the RS get more miles on Tesco than on V-power
Spaceman Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 ave no idea why been told tesco increases to 99 using E85 and v power is an additive like octane booster. the thinking being the ecu like the tesco better therefore can lean the mix off giving more miles to the gallon. the st gets another 25-30 miles more out a tank using tesco 99 than on normal unleaded.
