Casper Spec D Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 The exhaust must emit noise to the same level as a standard system on same model. So how does this work with a car which has a prodrive kit which includes a louder none standard exshaust from the origanal model?Should they all fail as they are not at the same level as the stanard exshaust?
neill54 Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 (edited) First off I'm not really ranting about my mot station just a bit peeved it has passed there in the same guise two years running with no cat I'm not bothered about having to buy a new back box cause I wanted one anyway but this is a good way of getting by the wife! But at the end of the day I thought a cat Was for emissions not noise reduction! Neil Edited July 18, 2009 by neill54
neill54 Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 Another thing I'd like to ask does everybody on here with a car that has been decatted change it back for mot time? Neil
scoobzie Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 neil the cat pipe is yours m8 to keep free of charge if you need it i dont require it anymore because i bought a bugey sti 2 weeks ago just give me a bell
Joe G Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 I have a standard catted downpipe if its any use to you?? Will be sure to get you through the emmissions. As for MOT's i had to change the cat every time to pass the emissions! Its just one of these things that you need to do. My old Evo failed its MOT with the exhaust being too loud. Thats all down to the discression of the MOT tester as my arguement was, would you fail a standard TVR for being too loud.
GalaGogsie Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Mine is in for MOT on Monday and my Ninja back box is bloody loud as well! On the plus side it's my mate thats doing the MOT so i hope he goes easy

Not at work so can't check the wording, the noise level we check is between 2500-3000 when doing the emissions test. I think it says clearly different from a standard system on equivalent model. That means a PPP would pass as it's not clearly different. A totally decatted system with one silencer is clearly different. I know, I have one! Cat needs to go back on for test, then off it comes, then back on when you fail a roadside check and back off again after you've had it cleared. Best to fit it with wing nuts
neill54 Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 judge for yourselfs guys right let me try and understand this my cars emissions are too high which i reckon if i do the over due service bit of additive it will go through but this with the cat, on my failure sheet it doesnt say anything about the cat just exhaust being to loud so if i fit a nice new quieter back box im on to a winner?? neil ps the problem really have is the wee guy who usually does my mot was not there and the boss done it!
terzo neil Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 jesus my 3 inch apexi exhaust is much louder than that, old dear can hear my coming to her bit and she's on the forth floor in mini highflats thats quiet mate in my opinion i have never had an exhaust knocked back for mot, even on the track car which hits 114 decibells at 2/3 throttle static test
badbaz Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 You'll need the cat to get the emissions down, it won't come down by servicing or additive, presence of a cat is not a test requirement, emissions levels are. A cat may quiten it enough to get through that part. Remember you can appeal the decision re the noise but it'll cost you and you're likely to lose if it's not standard cause that's the basic requirement.
craigdmcd Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Badbaz, I also work in a MOT station (my father's) an couldn't agree more with what you say. Bitching about a set of MOT standards that we have to adhere to boys is not our fault, we are just trying to make a living - it's very simple - make sure the car is legal at time of test! Diesel Hands, I think your MOT testing scenario is a little different to Neil54's !!

All cars after August 1992 require a cat test except for a very small minority such as kitcars.
arch Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 !00% correct craig mine is tested as a MY92 no emissions test - result
