Whats your current exhaust configuration?

I'm running with just the downpipe cat in place with PPP backbox (newage WRX) and on MOT emissions it's slap bang in the middle of the tolerance.. However it will fail if theres a bad join or a small hole anywhere..!!

2 1/2" decat downpipe, 3" middle section with 2 small silencer things then a sort of manipulated japanese 5" back box all joined properly

Your going to need a catalytic converter in the somewhere (even a sports cat) to get the emissions down, additive stuff wont drop your emissions much unless you have a groggy engine... And yeah 5" backbox probably is a bit much for the noise levels

car passed the emissions with this set up last year!

D'oh!

Just out of interest, do you still have the results from last years test? Interested to see what the emissions were then..

ask to see the noise measuring device and the calibration certificate that goes with it, i doubt they'll have one and it'll be the MOT testers opinion.

i was told my car was going to fail its MOT as it was too loud, this was before he'd put it on the ramp, i told him not to start the test and i'll go elsewhere, it sailed through.

take the car to sw motorsprt and get steve to mot the car your mot tester just sounds like a tit to me on my last classic i had a full blitz nur spec r no cat and believe me that was mega loud and nothing was ever said about it being loud as for emmisions i have a standard center section with cat you can have for free if need be

Arent some mot stations just a joke.A mk5 golf r32 makes about the same level of noise straight out the box.Are they gonna fail them for too much noise,or a lambo or a ferrari?I doubt it.

Simple answer yes!

the MOT station I use will fail my car for having a sunstrip.. Yet they know full well I now remove it just before I take it for the MOT and have one fitted again within an hour after! Yet the one time they said not to worry about it, they failed the car for it! To say I was a wee bit pissed off that year is putting it mildly.. Strictly speaking it is a MOT fail but FFS! I know someone with a suntrip that covers a lot more of the wiper sweep than mine yet his car sails through at the same MOT station!!

I used to think MOT stations where there to make sure cars are maintained and are roadworthy. Now I just think they are out to piss off people with whatever reason they can find

I own an MOT station, I also am an NT and a Scooby owner with sunstrips, small number plates, no cats and loud loud exhaust.

Firstly, you'll need a cat to pass the test, that's the bottom line. The exhaust must emit noise to the same level as a standard system on same model. There are no measuring devices and it is at the testers discretion to determine what is normal, clearly yours is not.

We are not here to piss you off, we're here to follow a set of rules laid down by the powers that be. The test is ludicrously poor in some areas and good in others. As an owner I have invested between 50 and a 100k to build to suit and install and operate a test station. If we don't test to the rules we can easily be removed from testing, bang goes the investment and there is NO way back. It's well known as stated above that stuff goes on/off for test and straight after you can put it back how it was. The test is appropriate on the day, while the car's in the bay and still on our premises (unless we're putting a car back to the way it was pre test which would have caused it to fail) and half an hour later it can be altered in so many ways (exclude corrosion from that). I see it from both sides. If your car isn't to MOT standard then either make it right then change it back, or if you are so inclined get yourself an MOT from a pub, save the time to change.

One thing - many, many cars, prob not so many Scoobs I presume because of the reasons we drive these cars, only ever get looked at once a year at test, never see a service, so see us as weeding out the dangerous stuff and not someone who's out to pick on you cause your car doesn't toe the line.

Rant over.

Oh, and all MOT stations should always come to the same result, the rule book is clear, experience is where the differences occur.
