evil_scoobs Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Hi Guys, Thought I would say hi now im an actual owner of a scooby Picked it up yesterday (6 hour drive each way but hopefully worth it!) Think it has a few wee issues with it that I need to fix so might ask for some help if anyone is local. Think there is a bit of a boost issue where it stutters and maybe boosts too high. Its a 2003 JDM with a few tweaks. any other JDM owners in the Glasgow area? Hopefully get along to a meet (if there are any) and meet some of you. Cheers Ross
ANDYJDMSTI Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Has the car been mapped for UK fuel? does it have a boost guage fitted and if so what bar you hitting?
dipsy Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 You can run them on V-power and octane booster .I asked Andy F when i bought mine
evil_scoobs Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 (edited) Yeah its been remapped for uk fuel. Apparently for Tesco Super Unleaded but any super unleaded should do. car seems to be getting worse Felt horrible coming on boost and very stuttery. Seems to idle so low as well Not having the best new experience of scooby ownership  Only got 40k miles on the clock Heres a pic of the boost guage hitting boost but with a red light (not sure what the light means) What boost do the remapped JDMs run?7 http://lh6.ggpht.com/_5wZXg3Q-_6o/Sf2DweA_...4A6bs/photo.jpg Edited May 3, 2009 by evil_scoobs
StewartyBoy Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Itd be worrying if you got the car for a steal. Best thing to do would be to get it to mapper to check the parameters, or even just a garage that are used to dealing with Import models. Last thing you want to be doing is running the car with the wrong MAP. Just out of curiosity, does it have an open cone!? Could be the MAF.

I think its a K&N typhoon which I suppose is a cone induction kit? MAF sounds interesting. Is that the Air flow meter? Can the induction kits blow them. If it was that would it run OK off boost, apart frmo low idle (is 400rpm idle normal?) It was remapped 20k miles ago for UK fuel so hopefully thats fine.
diablo Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 who done the remap fella maybe worth contacting them or the guys you bought it from if it were me i would be getting the car back to who ever you bought it from you should have at least some warrenty with it if worse case senario but defo sound,s boost related

I think they said powerstation but it was remapped 2 years ago. Hopefully a small boost issue. Im sure I can hear a dump valve in the car but cant find it. Was thinking maybe it was leaking, or there was a boost leak somewhere as there is quite a noise when turbo spools up. It does hit and hold full boost which made me think there wasnt a leak
steveairdrie Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Had the same issues with my 95 ra last week mate. it turned out to be the Maf sensor worth checking that out. cheers steve
jae Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 I would agree with steveairdrie on the MAF thing sound similar to a problem I had with my 99model when I got it ran like a bucket of bolts at 3k revs the maf sits between the filter and the turbo and yeah measures air volume and quality (i think) and adjust fueling to compensate, if it's mucky then it reads incorrectly....
StewartyBoy Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 (edited) As I said mate, due to the open cone drawing larger quantities of "cooler" air the MAF will sense this and stop the car from over-fueling itself. Try and get hold of a standard airbox or ask a friend with a scooby to try their MAF. The open cone may have been added after the remap has taken place, and maybe now needs to have the parameters for the MAF sensor widened to stop it cutting out. Edited May 3, 2009 by StewartyBoy
evil_scoobs Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 Is the MAF easy to test or get a new one then. Is the JDM MAF the same as UK. Any ideas on cost for fix. Lets hope some garages are open tomorrow while im off. Weird thing is the guy that I got it off said its been running like that for ages and he thinks it was fine. Maybe it just got much worse today as it was revving much higher last night without this issue. Anyone in Glasgow fancy a quick swap to test?

Unsure of cost but I would say JDM MAF'S were different to UK MAF'S. Easy to swap over mate, its betweenn the air filter and the turbo.
20kendo Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Hi evil ross . have a jdm bugeye wagon not mapped for uk fuel, run's fine on v-power, tis a tiptronic auto gearbox so could be entirely different fuel map from the manual gearbox's, not sure if any parts from my car would be any help! Welcome anyway to the forum from kenny.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 i remember when i changed my RCM induction cone for the APS setup i had to have the MAF re-scaled by Andyf. This was due to the pipework being a larger diameter than standard (hence flowing more air over the MAF). Might be worthwhile like has been said to get it checked out. I would also check your pipework on the dump valve for cracks.........again i had this issue before and the car would not boost properly.
steveairdrie Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 If your looking for a maf sensor try here http://www.importcarparts.co.uk/parts.asp?cat=68⊂=334 or there is a 2nd hand one for sale on pistonheads it is a green sticker one though http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/995449.htm cheers steve
micra_wrc Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 welcome to scottish scoobies glasgow area have monthly evening meets and the next one is this Thursday - clicky here for details there should be someone that would be able to have a look at the car for you, there are plenty of impreza owners around. we're going on a short run at 1930, perhaps best if you come along early if you need some diagnostic help. imy
evil_scoobs Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 Got it down to the garage today and they very kindly fitted me in . It was an air flow meter issue and spark plug issue, so its back running Girlfriend just stole a shot of it and has totally fallen in love with the power.
StewartyBoy Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Yup air flow = MAF. Glad you got it sorted mate. Enjoy!
evil_scoobs Posted May 10, 2009 Author Posted May 10, 2009 First decent pic I have taken of the scooby after giving it a little run today Pic I took yesterday
