2008 Wrx Hatch

Loving my new toy, but really looking for some more feedback, had this car since last year and I'm really struggling to get confident with it.

This was typified over the weekend when the back end came round 45 degrees from a standing start without applying any pressure to the throttle and this was on a dry road. The rest of the weekend on wet roads it felt like I was on a skid pan at all speeds having to fight a constant battle.

On the cobbles in Edinburgh there is a slight dull knock from the rear end.

Saying that driving it tonight it felt like it would never let go.

Its got to the stage where my Seat Leon feels safer in corners at all speeds than the WRX and that's only a 1.9TDI.

The unpredictability is really starting to piss me off I was wondering if anyone else had heard of this type of intimitent problem and more so is it a warranty claim or am I expected to spend more money to get a confidently handling car.

At present the car is 100% standard as I'm unwilling to do much which may invalidate the warranty.

There are going to be a few Subaru owners that are going to hate me but i dont think Scooby's are good handling cars, i honestly think it is more a good grip issue than good handling. Might just be me though.

the new WRX is not the sports car it once was, its little more than a shopping car with a turbo now, dont expect too much it TBH m8 :(

Yeh, I was shocked how my WRX handled as std. when i got it. And I have endedup spending a few pennies on getting it right, its almost there now though.

I've got to agree, i've had a 2006wrx and a 2008 sti and both have never really given me the confidence to 'chuck' it into corners. All feels a bit vague. My wife has a clio 197 and its point and squirt. Handles great and feels like a go-kart. I'm sure I'd be quicker A to B in that than the scoob.

a decent geometry set up is what most of you need, the set up from subaru is pretty p1$h AFAIK, get you geo set up and if your still unhappy the its whiteline time

definitely go to hypertech or progrip or similar and get the geometry done properly as it can make a big difference. and while there ask them(independent garage ) to check the struts as if your hearing a clunking...

but the newages definitely dont handle like the classics-not without full coilovers and setup

I was at my wits with the handling of my 07 WRX wagon to the point i was thinking about selling it.

Got some whiteline stuff fitted (arb's, drop links, ALK and lower springs) and the geometry set up properly at hypertech, i love driving the car now and look forward driving the B class roads when i can.

I woulden't say you need to fit all but at least think about the ABR's, drop links and geometry set up.

I'm no expert on suspension setup's and trying to explain it either.. However I'll give it a go!

My experience of the '08' car is that I've found it to be a lot more 'nervous' in the rear than on revious models, partly I think this is down to the lack of rear suspension travel and less weight over the rear.... This seems to be magnified on bumpy UK / Irish 'B' Roads.

I know with experience of Group N rally cars a lot of improvements were found in strengthening the rear cross member and lower arms... They still however suffer due to lack of weight and suspension travel. On a race track or airfield these cars are brilliant!

Maybe time to get the whiteline catalogue out and have a think about bigger rear roll bar and links, different springs and a decent geo. setup?

the first thing to mod is the roll stiffness. the cars roll too much giving a very nervious ride .

the front is wooly ,not positive and the overall handling is total p**h

after doing my front and rear bars 22mm each end so far the car has been transformed

here is front bar fitted

rear bar + strengthening kit

i am going to alter the stiffness of the bars to see whats the best combo

plans fo anti lift kit springs poly bush kit and under braces .

the wrx is even softer sprung than the sti and could with the bar and spring treatment .

when i first got the sti ,it was nice to drive till it was run in and when i used its performance the roadholding showed that it wasnt up to the job

this is a work in progrress

cheers geo
