kookamunga Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 well finally got around to releasing the big blue cloud that used to follow my car like a bad smell!! yep i finally stripped and rebuilt my turbo I don't know why i put it off for so long. All i can say to anyone out there with a Smokey old turbo and not lookin for the reason to change for a bigger effort at £40 and a few hours work you can't go wrong. I expect not responsibility to the loss or injury to persons or possessions in following this route.
euan_r Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 nice one , surprisingly a job i havent had to do yet.

When i rebuild my turbos, i just mark the impellers, that way they go back the same way, and dont need balancing. I am at the moment working on a TD04/TD05 hybrid of my own, just need to work the details out to see what would work.

emoe Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 yeah man i just used a wee bit of paint to mark it up Yep that works!! i use an automatic center punch and punch two dimples next to each other on the impeller and body on both sides and then they go back together perfectly! Sometimes wonder why Turbo companies charge so much when i know they dont have a balancer!
thewelsho Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Any picts of the job? That's what I was thinking. Some nice step-by-step guides would have been good.
kookamunga Posted August 13, 2008 Author Posted August 13, 2008 That's what I was thinking. Some nice step-by-step guides would have been good. i didn't take pics but i have some guides if you want to pm me your email address i can forward them to you if your needing them. but the isnt that much involved just split he turbo leaving the exhaust housing in place so you don't need to mess about with an up pipe and down pipe gasket then its just a case of removing cir clips marking the shaft and spindle i also marked the nut so i knew it was going back at the same torque, then it should with any luck fall apart
kookamunga Posted August 13, 2008 Author Posted August 13, 2008 (edited) forgot to say i could do the job for you for a small fee lol Edited August 13, 2008 by kookamunga
emoe Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 i also marked the nut so i knew it was going back at the same torque, You didnt replace the nut? Did a new one not come in the kit you purchased? where did you get the kit. as all mine from air research or garret come with the nut. when i do the rebuilds i replace that nut, and i always use Loctite 808 high temp locker fluid. Although thinking about it, i dont suppose it really matters about that nut, i just change mine because theres a new one. Im also amazed you did it on the car!! Fair play to you!!! What has pleased me more Kook is that you too are doing a job that MOST would say is far too technical and involved, yet is really a simple job to do!
thewelsho Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 forgot to say i could do the job for you for a small fee lol Mine's isn't needing doing; would just have been interesting to put images to it - a picture paints a thousand words and all that
JohnSt Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 Im also amazed you did it on the car!! Fair play to you!!! He didn't, read it again !!
emoe Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 He didn't, read it again !! Just re-read it. pleaze explain this! but the isnt that much involved just split he turbo leaving the exhaust housing in place so you don't need to mess about with an up pipe and down pipe gasket so tell me, how do you remove the whole turbo without messing with the up pipe and downpipe gaskets???????????
turbo2000wagon Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 Just re-read it. pleaze explain this!so tell me, how do you remove the whole turbo without messing with the up pipe and downpipe gaskets??????????? I think he leaves the exhaust housing still bolted to the up pipe, removes the downpipe and then splits the body of the turbo in half. ..clever. I've had a bash at rebuilding my turbo (I even tried modifying a TD05 16g to an 18g with some success) but I've always removed the unit from the car.

My point is (and i guess my years of doing these turbos probably means nothing!to some!) the only way you can do the turbo seals without touching the up-pipegasket AND the downpipe gasket (which is what he stated) is to do the seals with the turbo still bolted to the car. This is completely possible, i have done this a couple of times, but makes space a little tighter. I complimented kook for doing that as most people deny its possible. other than that i wanted to know how you remove the turbo with the uppipe and downpipe still attached if it wasnt done on the car. But the previous post stated I hadnt read it right. Must go back retake english!
kookamunga Posted August 14, 2008 Author Posted August 14, 2008 i did get a new nut with the kit but i was a cheep nylon locking one which i thought would not stand up to the punishment and heat but yeah a wee bit industrial strength thread lock did the trick. sorry boys never meant to cause a tiff between fellow impreza buds. i think we should all meet at the Mcrae Gathering and imbrace in one big group hug failing that we can strip down to the waist and have a bare knuckle fight please put your names belowe if your interested

You did the right thing then there mate. Fight Club: 1: Kookamunga 2: Mike Tyson 3:

Erm, don't thing so !!! Remove vband clamp and remove core and Compressor complete. leaving only the turbine housing still attatched to both the up and down pipes But the previous post stated I hadnt read it right. emoe Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 (edited) Remove vband clamp and remove core and Compressor complete. leaving only the turbine housing still attatched to both the up and down pipes HOLY GOD!!! is that not what i said in the first place!!! HOW DO YOU GET THE PIPES AND TURBO OFF THE CAR THEN??????? please explain rather than post clever comments!! You obviously dont read evry well, as it states he left the gaskets and pipes intact. What you just stated in your first wittey comment was exactly what i was referring to. Some people!!! Edited August 14, 2008 by emoe
JohnSt Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 HOLY GOD!!! is that not what i said in the first place!!! HOW DO YOU GET THE PIPES AND TURBO OFF THE CAR THEN??????? please explain rather than post clever comments!! For clarity, please read post #9 again Who said anything about removing pipes from the car ? No need to get stroppy For the life of my I don't see what is difficult to understand. It's not Rocket Science. But since you appear to be struggling I'll explain. The up pipe is still on the car, it's still attatched to the turbine housing, it's therefore still attatched to the car. Lets not forget the downpipe, it's still attatched to the car also !! I'm sure you will agree neither the uppipe-turbo Gasket nor The Turbo-Downpipe Gasket have been disturbed in this senario. Remove Oil Feed Pipe, and Oil Drain. Remove Water Banjos. Pop wee circlip between Acuator rod and Wastegate. Remove Cold side inlet pipe and outlet. Undo Core/Turbine housing V Band. Remove core Turbine wheel and Compressor assy comlete from car. Strip and replace seals. Reverse to re-assemble You obviously dont read evry well, as it states he left the gaskets and pipes intact. Really ? He did and it does What you just stated in your first wittey comment was exactly what i was referring to.Some people!!! I do like to introduce Wit where I can, it's nice to be nice
