barry_shepherd Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Well was travelling into Broughty Ferry yesterday afternoon to see a man about a dog blah blah blah. Driving down fairfield road (pretty steep brae for all you non-Scumdonians out there) when my offside rear brake line decides it doesn't want to be stay in one piece and splits! Lost all pressure in the braking system and the ever pending T-junction at the bottom is giving me the evil eye. So much hand braking and down changing followed and a swift wee prayer to the big chap upstairs and the road was clear at the bottom and the speed was slow enough to let me take the turning. Ended up having to get the old pick up truck to take me to the garage where she's getting fixed just now. Moral of the story: Always take out RAC cover a week before anything goes wrong with you car! Saved myself £200 on the tow. Hoping the damage to the wallet ain't too bad when I get her later on. Stupid bl@@dy thing!

westtra Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 make sure if they are changing the brake lines for the reaer that they just re route them from the original of over the petrol tank as if theyy follow the original route they need to dropp the axel and petrol tank which means a big job.
scooby doom Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Glad to here things didn't go wrong at the junction mate. Reminds me though, I bought those HEL braided lines on the group buy but haven't got them fitted yet, so will have to get on to that next.

thewelsho Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Yeah close shave indeed. I'm pretty sure you would be able to upgrade to bradied hoses all round for a little more than that, which would seem like the best option.

Not being that clued up on the old mechanics of the brakes am not sure if that's a good thing it was only that that went or not. They had it sorted within a few hours anyway. The car had braided hoses on when I got it but it's only the front that have them now. Apparently the same must have happened to the other rear as the mechanic said that was just a standard one as well. Will probably get around to getting braided put back on to the rears but I'm just glad I can stop properly Cheers, Shep

AlanG Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Cheers Barry, I ask because if one flexy has went you're best to replace all four to be on the safe side. As for handbrake turns, unless it's been changed to a hydraulic handbrake, it's operated by cables!

iainc Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Could have been worse... I had a close shave years ago with the Discovery V8i... had been bombing into work as normal without a problem. Got into it around lunchtime to head to the other office and pulled out the car park, put my foot on the brake and nothing... turned out I'd burst one of the calipers Was so lucky it happened at 10mph or less rather than the 60-ish I'd been doing on the way in. Also lucky it was at such a slow speed 'cos the disco has a transmission brake and I'd probably have fooked the drivetrain or just spun out of control trying to use it to slow down. Glad to hear you got away with it as well... would hate to be going at speed and then find out I had no way of stopping
