j10 dly Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Since joining the site, I have heard a lot of people talking about getting their cars Remapped. Now this to most if not all of you will sound like a stupid question, but i was just wondering what was involved in a Remap and if you need anything in particular done to the car to get one, or can any car be remapped. Sorry again if this question is crazy but im not too clued up on this sort of thing, tried a search to find out more but no joy. Also heard alot of people on here talking about Andy F who done their Remaps, and sounds like a top bloke, just wondering where he is based. Cheers James

thewelsho Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Since joining the site, I have heard a lot of people talking about getting their cars Remapped. Cheers James James I'm not really the one to be answering your question, but I guess I'll do until a more knowlegeable person comes along. When the car is remapped, many of the paramaters containtained in the cars ECU - engine management system, are changed. These changes give the car more power and better fuel economy as well as other factors. Strictly speaking, you don't need anything else done to your car to have it re-mapped, however, the mapper can then only take the car so far. Typically, remapping is done to get more power, but new power will need modifications for one of two reasons. 1) to provide more power in the first instance 2) to provide support for the new power. If you bung on a bigger turbo to your car, it will provide higher levels of boost, however your ECU wont be able to see this. When you run your car on boost with the bigger turbo, the ECU will cut power to the engine to protect it as it doesn't know what to do with higher boost levels. Therefore, the car needs to be mapped or sort of reprogrammed to see the new boost levels and use them accordingly. Even with the car running with a new turbo and having been mapped for that turbo, there is a knock-on effect. For example, will there be enough cooling? If no, you need a bigger intercooler. Will the fuel system be able to cope for the greater damands? If no, then you would need bigger injectors and an uprated fuel pump. And on and on it goes! The only way to know what mods your car will need, is to know what you want from the car. Given the car's year of manufacture and model type, one can then build a profile of the mods required to match your requirements. As stated previouly, you can take your car for a remap with no mods, but the mapper can only take it so far. the remap is over £600 and this means it not much bang for your buck. most people start of with sensible mods like a decat exhaust or sports cat exhaust - depending on your car this could give you up to 30 or so added BHP. Most peope will wait until they have collected uprated parts, fit the mall at once and limp the car to the mapper and have him unleash the potential of the car and the new mods. Once you have added more power, will your brakes be able to stop you? Will your car handle well with the new power? on and on it goes, there is practially no limit to what you can do!!!! I'm not sure if any Subaru can be mapped. i know that any Newage can, but Classics, I think use a replacement chip (I know next to nothing about the old cars ). Hope that helps in some way! Oh and by the way, I should let you know that modding is costly, addictive and downright frustrating at times! That said, you cannot not do it! Happy motoring!
p1ggm Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) i had the wagon mapped last week by the power of greyskull, andy f and an apexi power fc, car pulls much much better, cant reccomend him enough this is the 3rd time i have used him, first time for power fc and so far so good mine is a 98 my so guessing power fc is the way you will have to go Edited March 25, 2008 by p1ggm
dipsy Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) J10 dly if you have the money go for full decat, panel filter, power fc ,uprated fuel pump and you might see 280bhp and maybe the same torque on the td04 after remap with these mods and ecu.Andy F is the man for a remap Edited March 25, 2008 by Dipsy

I don't know if mad scientists or witch doctors fits best, but one of them will guide you down the dark side of modifying anyway. The Ecutek website is quite informative though - http://www.ecutek.com/tuning/

Trackhound Tuning Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Thank you for asking this question. I've always wanted to, but thought I'd appear like a doughnut for asking. Hi Andy - as well as paying professional tuners, it is possible to remap the new age imprezas (bug eye onwards) using free and open source software called Romraider (previously called Enginuity). It has been developed by fellow enthusiasts all over the world and is as powerful as the software professional tuners use such as Ecutek. Romraider also has an excellent support forum of users who provide advice and share experiences of remapping and tuning using this software. I have used Romraider for 18 months now and with the necessary engine modifications have tuned my car, which is a daily driver, to over 400 bhp (using fuel additives and V-power). If you'd like to know more about ECU remapping on the impreza there is also alot of information on the Romraider site. www.romraider.com

thewelsho Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 (edited) Oh no, I dare not look at this site! I DARE not LOOOOOOK! I looked! But this section from the FAQs put me off Q What is the worst that can happen if something goes wrong? The problems that have the potential to occur include, but are not limited to: An unreadable/unusable ECU. A blown motor and its subsequent damage. Unexpected behavior on the road or track that may cause injury or death to the user as well as others. Violation of local and/or federal laws due to the modification of the factory ECU. I'll leave it to those in the know! Edited March 26, 2008 by TheWelsho

Sounds like a normal day in the SIDC to me.
