andy Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Grant sent me that photo tonight in a hot sweat. I really, really, really wanted to get it up on the Gathering website, but the shirts went on sale tonight and I didn't want to bury that photo in amongst the shirts announcement, nor did I want to bury the shirts announcement with the photo as both are equally massive news It'll headline on the Gathering site for sure, but the shirts make money for the charities and they have to come first

badbaz Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I know this will cause uproar, but has there been real thought given to the decision on speed limit for the convoy. My Subaru does 56mph at an indicated 60mph, with the volume of cars likely to be in convoy, this is gonna cause a helluva inconvenience to other road users. How many times have you all read of lorries sitting side by side for miles on end on these or other forums? It infuriates car drivers. I drive trucks too and I'm not a slow or excessively fast driver but I think maybe there should be some sensible discussion on this. I can fully see that we shouldn't annoy anyone, but this may create just this kind of feeling. If we attempt to run at 60mph, trucks and coaches are gonna become a real problem. Thoughts?

Hi there mate, As far as I'm aware the convoy is not going to have cars sitting side by side, as I say im not 100% sure, but I was in the belief that the convoy would be one behind the other (with most motorways having 3 lanes) this gives other road users two lanes for overtaking. The actual people organising the event will have more accurate info tho mate. Cheers James
colin_ross Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 I'm sure common sense will prevail. The aim is to travel at 10 mph less that the limit on the motorway sections. As mentioned that will mean 60mph for the majority of the journey. If we needed to pass a slower moving vehicle I'm sure that people will pick a sensible speed to overtake and not sit next to them for miles like 2 lorries trying to over take each other whilst on the limiters. The main thing is that nobody drives like an idiot. This is a chance to show that subaru drivers can behave responsibly and on an event like this poor driving standards should not be allowed to overshadow the meaning of the day.
badbaz Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 (edited) I realise that the convoy will be in single file, has anyone thought of it's physical length though? As an Impreza driver I'm fully aware of the views some people have of the cars we drive. I just think that in reality, where most cars rarely ever travel on the motorway at 70mph or less that, to remove the difficulties with trucks and coaches, we should consider 70mph for the 3 lane motorway sections. Has there been a convoy of these proportions on a long motorway journey before? How did that turn out? Edited June 26, 2008 by badbaz
micra_wrc Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 (edited) Yes we have thought of this. there will be 2 motorway sections over the weekend the 1st stretch happens on Sunday when the convoy will be travelling approx 15 miles along the M40, from Banbury to Warwick. This is where the heaviest volume of subarus will be. the Highways Agency, local councils and relevant police forces are aware of this and give us their approval and backing. the fact that it takes place on a Sunday afternoon should also minimise the number of the public on the road at the same time as us. the 2nd stretch of motorway section will be the day before, on Saturday, when we do the Lanark to Banbury leg. This is where we'll be on the motorway the longest. Thats probably where your concerns about blocking the motorway come from. 60mph is a legal and reasonable speed and should not cause any tailbacks. 60mph is faster than the HGVs but slow enough to let other people pass without any bother. We are not going to be hogging all 3 lanes of the motorway. We will be using the inside lane, travelling one behind the other. obviously we will be driving sensibly and should not be antagonising anyone on the road . The point of the event is to commerate Colin's achievement and is our Subaru tribute to him. It is not a race or a cruise. that's why the limit of 60 mph on motorway stretches has been set. It will also help the fuel economy of our thirsty cars, those that are doing the full 2 days will be travelling quite a distance and we want to make the very expensive petrol last as long as we can I dont see a problem here Edited June 26, 2008 by micra_wrc
badbaz Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 If you're happy then I am too. I think it's a great thing you are all organising, just thought it was worth consideration. What is the expected volume leaving Lanark and does anyone know a rough "on the road" running length of the convoy? Non Scoob drivers have asked me this and many more questions besides! They're just jealous. When we did the memorial one from Cairn Lodge it was as far as you could see. In either direction!! Keep up the good work guys.

sKunk Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 (edited) I don't know if this is useful to you or not but this is what I think the route looks like via google maps including petrol stop and Premier Inn (Banbury): http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&hl=e....85144&z=10 A = Lanark & A70 (Depart) B = M74 C = M6 D = Fuel Stop E = M5 F = M40 G = M40 H = Premier Inn I = Prodrive (Banbury) J = Prodrive (Warwick) If anyone want to modify the route (ie where we go through Lanark) feel free Edited July 8, 2008 by sKunk
