Not sure what exactly is public at the moment so I'll say I heard this
through a 3rd party and have no idea if it is factual (keeping myself
out of trouble !)
I beleve this is what happened to S/mag.
Firstly,
a contributor of a technical article falsely claimed it to be his own
work. The issue was printed and almost out to distribution before JMB
were made aware that the particular article didn't actualy belong to
the contributor and it had been copied from another publication.
Attempts were made to buy the article from the real owner but the offer was declined.
This resulted in the loss of a complete issue printed run.
Shortly afterwards Hanna Barbera, http://www.toonopedia.com/hannabar.htm
the owners of Scooby-Doo allegedly raised a legal action prohibiting
the use of the name "scooby" in the title of the publication.
The actual name of the mag was Scooby Magazine. Scoobymag as one word would have been ok but not "Scooby" on its own apparently.
Another issue was printed, ready for distribution at this point but it was illegal to actually issue it.
A
new business will always have limited cash for contingencies. If they
get hit by two big 'show stoppers' on the trot it can be hard to
overcome.
I can only guess at the cost of these two most unfortunate issues.
I
can assure you these guys put a hell of an effort into this and
certainly are not swaning around in company cars spending your
subscription money.
I do know Jon had plans to change the name
and relaunch the mag (as mentioned on the website) and indeed this
still may be the case, it depends on what you read into the statement
published.
I hope it is still a viable business and wish Jon and Dee the best of luck with the recovery/relaunch.
