  1. Shame you're not passing! Definitely worth a trip over the Splugen pass though, the views are really great!
  2. Pretty shocking how many are caused by people running red lights!
  3. Have I ever driven through Switzerland to lake Como? - Have I ever There is only one way to lake Como and that's called the Splügen pass This is by far and above the best road I've driven in the Alps... and I've driven a lot in the Alps... I LIVE in the Alps (well the foothills at least) Its certainly not the fastest road/pass in the world but definitely the most impressive. The Swiss side has the craziest set of hairpins (see link) of any road, the Italian side (heading from Switzerland) starts with a relatively flat section with fast corners before taking on a sheer cliff face with many single lane tunnels - you'll probably use reverse more than 2nd gear Its a very impressive road and the views are spectacular! Alternative routes depend really on where you're travelling from: If you're taking the ferry to Calais, then you're likely to enter Switzerland in (or near to) Basel. The direct route from here would take you over the Gottard pass. Personally, I'd avoid this at all costs, the Gottard pass is like a motorway compared to other passes and is pretty boring. If you come this route, then I would take the Gottard pass road as far as Andermatt, then as you enter the village of Andermatt, do a left onto the Oberalp pass towards Chur. This is a really nice little pass the way up is lots of nice hairpins and the way down is fast open roads. From the end of this pass, you can then either take the Splügen pass (as above) or the St Bernardino pass/tunnel towards Como. If you're taking the ferry to Holland, then the best route through Germany will take you into Switzerland around Schaffhausen/Konstanz or via Austria at Bregenz. In this case, you'll travel through Eastern Switzerland via Chur. This route is perfect for the Splügen pass above, or if you want the fastest route, then head from Thusis(/Chur) towards St. Moritz, then to Chiavenna. Its quite a bit further than Splügen, but the roads are much quicker so takes less time, yet still great to drive with fantastic scenery and a couple of smaller passes. Slightly further but a better pass to drive is to head to the St. Bernardino pass towards Lugano. Would probably take about as long as the Splügen pass route, but the roads are much easier to drive. Whichever way you go, you'll regret not taking the Scooby P.S. If you plan your route via Friedrichshafen, you're always welcome to stop by for a brew/beer!
  4. If you want good traction in the winter, then forget all the toys and get yourself winter tyres! I have Pirelli Sottozero in 235 width on the 08 STi and they're fantastic!!! If you are content on driving with the wrong tyres and letting the toys make up for it, then you will want to set the DCCD to Auto+, SI-Drive in "I" mode and leave the VDC on as a default start point. If its really slippery and you find the VDC system is over-compensating, then you can consider switching the VDC to sport mode by long pressing the button until the VDC symbol is lit up green in the display. This will allow more slip before the VDC kicks in and you may find it better. If its still not good, then as a last resort try switching it off completely (short press of the button so the VDC light is green on the dash! You may also want to try a manual setting for the DCCD. Hit the manual button next to the flick switch and you'll see the bias display on the dash. Flick the switch forward to the front most position, but NOT to LOCKED! If you lock the diff, you'll find the car very twitchy when you have varying grip; only use LOCKED when you're stuck in snow or mud with all wheels spinning and not able to move. If you want to have FUN in the snow, then VDC off, DCCD manual with full rear bias and SI-Drive set to "S#" But seriously, anyone who attempts to drive a car in the winter months on Summer performance tyres is a liability! The improved stopping distance of winter tyres in the cold, never mind wet or even snow, could potentially save far more lives than any number of speed cameras!
  5. Shocking news! You never know when something like this can happen! Best wishes to Greg and his family and this difficult time!
  6. Whatever you put on, you shouldn't really mix front and rear tyres as the driving characteristics of each tyre brand will affect the balance of the car. The problem is also made worse for AWD cars! I would also advise always replacing all four tyres together to ensure a matching rolling radius from front to back. Any difference in tread depth between any driven wheels can cause excessive wear on the diffs.
  7. I just checked the club rules... it says nothing about hypocrisy!
  8. Having owned a number of Blue imprezas over the years, I can confirm that the fastest colour is Black! Anyone who disagrees will be moderated! Now get back on topic!
  9. I'm kind of a bit sad when it comes to calendars, I don't like to look through a new calendar in advance, and wait for each month to come before turning the pages! Its not a superstitious thing, I just like the surprise picture each month Imagine my surprise a few minutes ago when I turned the page on my SIDC 2012 calendar to February to see a picture that I took of Paul N's P1 on top of the St. Bernardino pass in Switzerland! ...now then, who do I need to talk to about copyright and royalty payments
  10. Prior to the for sale forums being restricted to members only there were a few, but quite serious, scamming incidents. In the majority of cases, the general forum users won't have even been aware of the problems as they are handled behind the scenes by the moderators and admin team. Also the mods had to invest (read waste!) a lot of time in policing the for sale forums in order to protect the forum users. By restricting the for sale sections, we have managed make the for sale forum much safer for the buyers as the sellers are no longer anonymous internet users but club members with registered real addresses, payment and contact details. Additionally, the moderators need to spend much less time policing the for sale forums, so we can spend more time dealing with other users issues. Since introducing the rule, we haven't had a single case of scam sellers on the forum! The for sale forums provide an additional benefit for the members who are able to sell items in the most trusted Subaru for sale market available to the UK Subaru community, which in turn makes it much easier to sell items.
  11. Just to be clear, the SIDC has a deal with Keith Michaels for discounts for members along with a dedicated direct phone number to the guy that deals with the club members, so you always get to speak to the same person and he is familiar with Impreza's and various modifications etc. There is however no guarantee that they will be any cheaper than other insurers, but they do seem to be cheaper for most. Also don't forget that the discounted insurance is only one of many discounts you can get as a club member, so if the insurance doesn't pay for your membership, then the other discounts probably will
  12. I think the list may be a little out of date I think the membership pack was cut with the drop in membership fees last year. Certainly there is no more printed copy of True-Grip, only online now!
