  1. It all depends what you want to achieve and your budget. If you stay local and do the Lowlands down in the central belt or the Highland Championship for the guys up North it can be a fairly cheap sport. If you want to compete in the Scottish the cost ramps up exponentially as does the competition. As has been mentioned previously by JC this can be a cheap hobby but not in A3 or B3 where the impreza's and Evo's live.

It can be very rewarding from a personal point of view in terms of building a car yourself and seeing it become competative but it can also be very very time consuming. If you are not able to do a lot of the work yourself you will need very deep pockets.

  2. interesting contraption, screamer pipe?

Pretty standard set up not unlike the RCM one. take off for external wastegate then plumbed back into the downpipe to keep it nice and quiet ish. It was made to try and make sure the gas flows were as good as possible. The downpipe has also been made to flow as best possible which compromises the turbo location a little. It is difficult to fit it all in the space available so its pretty much a case of sticking as close as possible to what works and taking advice from those that know and have been here before.

  3. Well been out today and removed all the exhaust pipework so it can be sent for ceramic coating.

Not the best pictures of how it turned out but here it is.

Also took a couple of pics of the intercooler pipework, again it will be coming off to be cleaned up and then refitted. Will also check all the interior weld joints to ensure they are smooth and grinde flush with a flexi-drive where necessary.

I was going to V-Band the turbo to downpipe joint but decided against it so this may find itself a new home soon

Next up need to remove and swap the rear diffs after the new one has had a tweek. Then its a case of putting it all back together ;)

  4. Well thought it was about time to update this thread. I have not really had the time to spend on the car that i had hoped due to working away from home a lot recently.

I have now managed to pick up most of the bits i need for the changes i have planned. The first item was an uprated twin plate Exeedy clutch which will be needed to cope with the extra torque and power i anticipate this year.

    CIMG1686.jpg

Also needed a set of GT Spec headers which i have trial fitted prior to getting reworked at Meercat.

I knew that the gearbox I have used for the last 2 seasons would not cope this year so i have been hunting for a fair while now for a suitable six speed and managed to pick up a Hawkeye Spec D unit. This is fitted now but not wired up to the Neetronics yet but that wont take long. I was surprised at the difference in size of the two boxes but having seen them side by side can now understand why the 6 speeds seem able to reliably cope with decent power levels.

It is not the easiest of boxes to fit with the car on axle stands but with the help of John McG we managed to get it in after a bit of persuasion.

I do have a small issue with the linkage hitting the tunnel but hope that will be resolved when I fit the 6 speed gearbox mount, I had to use the old 5 speed one as a temporary measure but have a new hardrace one now thanks to Bren at Apex

As a result of the 20G I used last year heading off to a new home I have liberated the GT30 from the Rocket - thanks John. This is obviously a rotated fit turbo so needed to get the pipework etc changed to suit this. I had the car booked into Meercat just after Christmas but with problems associated with the weather that had to be postponed until last Monday and Tuesday. I had the car down with Willie and Scott for two days to have the upipe modified to suit the garret, rework the downpipe to suit and plumb in the external wastegate. As well as this I had to change around all intercooler pipework. I cant thank the guys enough the attention to detail and effort put in to ensure the best results possible was superb but having said that Scott has done work on the RA numerous times before and also on the road car so the quality of the work is not a surprise. I have not got many decent pictures of the set up yet but all the pipework has to come back off to have some sort of heat management arranged so will sort ot some pics then.

There is still a fair amount of work to do to get the car ready for mapping but confident it should be ready by the end of the month.

  5. GT30R, 2.5, 6 Speed. Looks like i will have to turn my boost up :D

What like at kames  You are also making assumptions about what is fitted to my car also what classes or even where or what i intend to do next year :D You should spend more time on your own car rather than stalking me B)

  6. the car needs two new back tyres on the car the now is the Pirelli P7000 soulld i put the same back on as the front two have the pirellis on them or sould i go for sumthing diffrent? if so what? or not wheres there a good deal on them

    thanks for the help guys

What size tyres are you using I have 2 very good condition Pzero rosso tyres that are surplus at the min if you are interested they are 225x45x17

  7. As others have said anyone can map a car but the results you get are down to the experience and expertise of the mapper.

Andy has mapped both my road and race cars and I can see no reason to go elsewhere. As Dave says Dyno's can be a very useful tool no more no less. I have not had either of my cars on a Dyno just to get a bhp/torque figure and dont intend to, it wont make any of them any faster.

  8. A 16G will take you to around just over 300 ish BHP on V power which seems a small gain for the expense when compared to the 280/290 you can easily achieve on the standard TD04 with simple exhaust mods and a remap. It would be silly to remap the car without at the very least removing the restrictive cat in the WRX uppipe and preferably fitting a sports cat and centre decat. By changing the exhaust components and fitting a panel filter, if you want, and then getting Andy F to remap it you will see around 280bhp which makes the car a totally different machine and infinaitely more fun for little expense and hassle.

  9. Did the bobbies come round Noel? they should have been able to get samples and check round to see whos been buying that much stripper... You never know, people who do things like this dont tend to be that smart in the long run, and I'm sure that they should get found with a bit of effort...

You answered your own question there "with a bit of effort". If it was one of us doing 35 in a 30 the effort would be there but an act of vandalism like this will probably see little action. I hope I am wrong :D

  10. What are you doing about all the drain holes underneath the sound deadning? Im at your stage except a roll cage isnt in and I wasnt sure wether to weld them over?

I went for the asy light option some ally cut shaped and riveted on using windscreen sealer to wet assemble to ensure it seals

Cars looking good, must be costing a fortune in labour tho :)

  11. oh yes.

The Peltor will do it's thing as I have no intention of reducing the volume that is generated from the car so may as well strengthen the weak parts and have some confidence that the gearbox is not going to implode with some spirited driving.

Lucky for me that my MOT tester is as deaf as a fencepost

Grant is Andy F's PPG still for sale that may interest you it would be perfect for your car
