~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Finally ................after waiting 9 days for the DVLA to transfer my private reg I have finally collected my new sensible lifestyle wagon Having gone from my 305 bhp bugeye it feels VERY different. Straight away I have noticed :- Quieter ( even with the PPP which has a limited discrete but purposeful burble) Creamy & Smooooooth power delivery but very linear and no kick in the back like before Pick up in 1st gear can catch you out at junctions Acceleration in any gear is immense and overtaking requires virtually no changing over gears ( 310 ft lbs torque) Very easy to pile on the speed and exceed the limit in 4th & 5th With the PPP :- 30-50 mph in 4th gear comes down from 5.0 to 4.0 seconds with 30-50 mph in 5th in 4.7 instead of 6.6 seconds Ride is nicely damped & pliant ( inverted struts ) with more roll than before but waaaaay comfier over poor surfaces The steering is much lighter and the car feels a lot more reponsive ( the 02 bugeyes had steering wheels like Corporation Buses !) Throttle reponse is crisp The acceleration is instant but the TD04 dies at about 5.5k Seats are less huggy but the leather feels great and the heated elements shall keep Natalie happy I said I would not modify it but the following would do nicely :- Whiteline ARB & Drop links (kill body roll but maintain pliant ride) Momo Gear Knob (standard one makes me feel ill) Reinstall the Defi's / Head Unit (cos they give me the Scooby horn) Unresonated centre (for just a tad more burble) Was sad to see the Black Mamba ( soooooooo many memories) go but the Silver Bullet is a very capable beast........ Here's what I had before ( and the dough I spent over 3 years ( nowt compared to Higgy & Fai17 but still a lot)) Approx Value Engine · Ported VF35 Turbo from an STi8 £300.00 · Ecutek switchable dual boost remap ( & license) by Andy Forrest Performance ( 305 bhp & 270 ft lbs torque) £600.00 · HKS decatted up-pipe ( ported) £150.00 · TSL ThunderCat SportsCat downpipe 100 CEL ( wrapped) £400.00 · TSL straight-through Centre Section £100.00 · H&S Scoobysport Stainless backbox £250.00 · Walbro Fuel Pump 255 £75.00 · K&N Panel Filter £40.00 · Samco Hose Kit £80.00 Chassis · 18” PFF7 Prodrive alloys c/w Toyo T1R tyres £1,200.00 ( but swopped with Mako + cash) · Prodrive Sports Springs £300.00 · Prodrive Geometry Settings £100.00 · Whiteline Rear Solid Drop Links £40.00 · Whiteline Adjustable Anti-Roll Bar £125.00 · Front Strutbrace £40.00 Brakes · Grooved God Speed Discs £180.00 · Ferrodo DS2500 Pads £150.00 · Goodrich Braided Hoses £50.00 · 5.1 Fluid £10.00 Interior · Defi BF gauges ( Boost, Oil pressure & Oil Temp) + Controller & Genuine Defi Pod £500.00 · Tracker £500.00 · Sports Upgrade Seats ( better than the STi seats) £0.00 · Alpine Ipod ready ( full speed/full control) head unit £150.00 · Forester Pocket £15.00 · WRX Floor Mats £40.00 · CG Lock ( locking the lapstrap) £50.00 Exterior · STi7 intercooler scoop £100.00 (painted) · Scott Lowe STi Mudflaps £150.00 · Mesh Fog Lamp Covers £50.00 Total £5,745.00 Off to the Ring in May again so shall see how she performs Thanks for the advice and modding addiction Cal
micra_wrc Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 ooh liking that have you had baby+stuff out in it yet?
eurosti Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) Very nice Cal, I will see it in the metal in May! Edited March 19, 2008 by eurosti
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 ooh liking that have you had baby+stuff out in it yet? I think this answers your question
pmacFTO Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Very smart Cal - not the car - I mean you tricking the wife into thinking you now have a sensible car...
st3ph3n Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Cal - did you not have a splitter on the bug that went its different ways from the car at an unkonwn location?
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 Oh yeah ! FASTEST splitter ever despite robust fitting. Must add to Andy F sessions to the above too ( another £400 !)
st3ph3n Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Mine's currently lying at the side of the house in two very distinct pieces, one of which is more twisted than the col de turini. I did manage to get nearly 3 years out of mine though.
andrew_forrest Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Nice one, excellent value these motors I tried to convince Mrs F that she would like one but she claimed I would take it away one day and turn it into a noisy uncomfortable monster ! Moi ?
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 Andy - you are a bad man ! With any luck I shall try and not darken your door ( but whilst I have your attention - can you do switchable maps for the MY06's ?)
st3ph3n Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 What he really means Andy is can you do a map that his wife wouldn't find out about.
thewelsho Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) Andy - you are a bad man ! With any luck I shall try and not darken your door ( but whilst I have your attention - can you do switchable maps for the MY06's ?) Not possible I'm afraid. The switchable maps was a feature of older cars where the ECU had dual maps; one for manual cars and one for automatic cars. When used in a manual car, the other map was not used (I'm not sure it was dual maps, but dual somethings!!). Anhyhoo, the Hawkeyes don't come in automatics, so the dual feature ECUs that could be used to provide two cycles was dropped. This is the gist of it but I'm sure some of the terminology is incorrect. What do I know about cars? Silver Bullet? I like that. I used to call my MY04 Toyota Celica that, but your chariot is far more deserving on such a title. Be carful when mapping your bad boy; I have lost an engine and a gear box so far! Good luck with it my man, I'm sure it will provide you with as much, if not more pleasure as Black Beauty. JW Edited March 19, 2008 by TheWelsho
fai17 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 What he really means Andy is can you do a map that his wife wouldn't find out about. Thats sound about right to moi... Nice Cal with all thefamily stuff in the boot.
RS Grant Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Nice car.. never realised it was PPP'd before, you'll enjoy that, very capable cars!! So did The Black Mamba get traded in with all the goodies on it... or have you sold that on yourself privately?? Cheers, Grant
G.T. Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 very nice cal, did you trade the bug in with the pff7s on it they would look sweet on your new car
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 G-Mac - different PCD for the 06/07 wheels Grant - stripped the Defi's & stereo. I did not think it was fair to take anything else off and besides my trade-in was bumped up heavily due to the mods. The Black Mamba will likely go to an enthusiast so it did not feel right stripping off Samco's etc. JW - cheer fella - I dont think I'll need a remap anyway. It has plenty of punch as it and I mng myself creeping round town in higher gears due to the low down grunt. Happy Days ! Cal
C_WRX Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Funny that so many silver cars receive the name "silver bullet", was same for my Civic Type-R, sold it to friends wife who call it Rhonda (as in Rhonda The Honda) ! Mind you my wife now calls my car Ruby (as in Ruby The Scooby) ! Bottom line Cal, good to see you still with an Impreza. Might have been £5k spent on the last one but you had fun doing it (keep trying to convince myself of the same!!), look at all your adventures, not to mention the informative write up's.
fai17 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 G-Mac - different PCD for the 06/07 wheelsCal It's G.T and not G.mac I thought the WRX PCD are all the same 5 x 100mm and it was only the STI that was different after the 05 plate (STI9) Have you still got the wheels as i'll be interesed in them?
thewelsho Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 (edited) It's G.T and not G.macI thought the WRX PCD are all the same 5 x 100mm and it was only the STI that was different after the 05 plate (STI9) Have you still got the wheels as i'll be interesed in them? Correct. All WRX wheels are PCD 5x100 and only from MY05 and onward did the STi change to PCD 114.3. Edited March 20, 2008 by TheWelsho
gus the bus Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Correct. All WRX wheels are PCD 5x100 and only from MY05 and onward did the STi change to PCD 114.3. Looking good Cal
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 Nice piece of info there fellas ! I never knew the WRX's were unaffected.......... The PFF7's were left on the car as part of the trade in. They had been powder coated and were on the verge of getting slighty tatty ( to a keen eye) Not sure if I'd get them again - they look the BEST in my opinion but they kerb very easily, protrude with zero protection and flat spot quite easily on large pot-holes. The flat spots were never a real issue and they certainly caused no vibration issues @ 145 mph on the German autobahn As part of the deal on my 2.5 I had the alloys swopped with a white WRX that had only done 6000 miles so effectively got new rims. 18" Superturismo's in Silver would be nice but I'm actually really liking the current ones. One more thing I failed to mention - it's soooooooooooo good have a rear windscreen wiper again........ And the HID Xenon headlights are awesome compared to those lame ersed candle powered Morrettes This is quite a good read :- ( see first URL with PDF link) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&saf...l+WRX%E2%80%99s Cheers Cal

colzo Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Very nice car Cal. I've drove my mates 2.5 WRX PPP Wagon and I would defo say its as quick as my 2.0 STI PPP.
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted April 6, 2008 Author Posted April 6, 2008 (edited) Well despite my best efforts I buckled slightly and have modded ( albeit only a little) Thanks to AWD ( who squeezed me in at the last minute and gave me a great price) I got a 24mm Whiteline ARB fitted ( standard is a piffling 18mm !) and solid drop links. I am leaving the suspension springs standard as the crashy ride was doing my nut in on pot-holed ridden urban areas on the last bugeye. The roll is massively reduced and the wagons corners so much flatter. Primarily had this fitted fot the Nuburgring assault next month as I felt I was driving a blamonge before this was fitted. Powerwise I am well happy. Met a red Mitsibushi FQ300 yesterday on the country roads after Stirling an he could not get away. The combination of 2.5L and tiny TD04 means that overtaking and acceleration out of bends is instantaneous. No lag whatsoever. Now have the Defi's and Alpine head unit fitted and got that horrendous standard gear knob replaced. K&N panel filter going in tomorrow and then that's all. Will uprate the brake pads when they next need replaced ! Cheers folks Cal edit - spelling Edited April 6, 2008 by ~ ~ Cal ~~
euan_r Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 ha couldnt resist modding it would you be better getting some pads now to have handy in the car if your going to the ring?
