scoobyseller555 Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 whatever you do...................dont get your wheels powdercoated,it weakens the alloy and have seen many wheels crack spokes around the bolt holes. not adviseable get them painted Gav
craig mac Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 whatever you do...................dont get your wheels powdercoated,it weakens the alloy and have seen many wheels crack spokes around the bolt holes. not adviseable get them painted Gav Now that is the first i have heard of that, Is this Due to the oven heat?[:^)]
thewelsho Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Is painting better in terms of looks? Should they have a laquer coating as well? Is it as durable as powder coating?
scoobyiain Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Think painting is the safer option, would not want a cowboy putting my wheels in oven. you need to know the exact grade of alloy it is and select the correct temp, if temp is too high then it will ruin the properties of the metal and become flimsy. Painting is the safest option imho
james_mowbray Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Its not just the oven bake that causes this. In the powder coating process after the alloys are blasted they are bathed in very strong acid. If theres any hairline cracks in the alloy the acid will penitrate and the oven process will aggravate this. There are pros and cons for both powdercoating and painting. If the alloys very badly damaged or corroded you will get a better finish powder coating than painting You will get a better colour match painting, powdercoating esp gold always seems to come out darker. (whites good though) Take into account that a bodyshop still bakes the wheels. All IMHO James
Jamis Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 Going to get some prices to get them painted.

scoobyseller555 Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 we use a mobile guy to do all our wheels. amazing finish in any colour you want,he will tackle even the worst damaged wheels! Gav
cusco kid Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 hi guys i have powdercoated hundreds of wheels and never had a problem /comp-rally -road i will stick to powdercoating geo
scoobyseller555 Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 i reckon that it could be the form of the wheel that is the problem Geo,i have seen many standard subaru wheels powdercoated, but, any of the ones i have seen with defects have been 2001-current model year wheels, perhaps it is down to the strength/formation of the wheel that is at fault here.
