johns Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Was at Costco at the weekend. They have a deal on at the moment if you buy a set of 4 Michelin tyres, then you get a whopping 20% off the total bill. This also applied to their excellent range of winter tyres Michelin Alpin PA2(3), which I used last winter. Just got a quote to get some fitted to y wife's Astra (205/55x16), and the cost for a set of 4 brand new winter tyres was about £275 including fitting, balancing etc. A set of 225/45x17s was about £94 each including fitting etc under this deal. The guy informed me that the deal on winter tyres will run until the end of the year, but I'm not sure if this only applies to the Aberdeen depot. Now that the track day season is effectively over, and the roads are cold, wet and covered in leaves, I'll be fittig my winter tyres in the next week or two when I find some time. John
thefastone Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Yeah I saw this too john, in fact I was in there looking for one tyre that I was needing (sidewall damage) as the rest at the time was fine, and they refused to replace just the one, saying that they would ONLY replace all 4 on a 4WD car... (thats when he pointed out the 20% thing, like that was going to make me any happier replacing tyres that were fine!) and anyways, Ive vowed never to put michelins back on my car ever again, they just dont do what they say on the tin, ive never felt confident on them, its pilot primitives that ive got on just now (and one goodyear...) and when I change them off then thats the last time that rubbish is getting on my car!
scientific steve Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 john was just wondering about these tyres are they ok for normal road use ie from now on till the weather gets a bit better or is it only for use when the roads are realy bad ? am needing tyres for my 16" alloys anyway and these winter ones could sway me if i can use them all the time over the next few months cheers steve
Auldy Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 I use www.mytyres.co.uk for mines, think ther prices are quite cheap plus free delivery []
johns Posted November 15, 2006 Author Posted November 15, 2006 Steve, you can use the winter tyres every day. They are only V rated (up to 130mph), but the chances of anyone going faster that in our winter conditions are quite remote. They do have softer sidewalls, and due to the number of cuts (sipes) in the tread, they are a bit squishy on dry roads, and you'll feel the car rolling more than you would normally expect, and understeer earlier coming out of corners etc, but you soon get used to it. Where they come into their own is on colder days, where the roads are wet/greasy, and braking distances are much shorter and the car is much less nervous. On snow and ice, the difference is astounding - I had to work to get the wheels to spin on frsh snow, whereas on normal/summer tyres, the slightest twitch of the throttle in any lower gears had the back end sliding around. However, the biggest difference is again under braking. I've got a downhill slope onto a main road, which after a few cars have driven over it tends to be akin to wet polished ice. On normal road tyres, I've got to stick the car into 1st gear and use engine braking in conjunction with very slight brake pressure to come to a gentle stop. Last year, there was a 1.0 VW Polo with skinny tyres which was unable to stop at all going down the hill, and skidded righ across the main road and collided with a van on the other side. On my winter tyres, I was able to come to a complete stop halfway down the slope with no fuss or drama. At times it was hard to tell that the road was even covered in snow and ice!! After running them for 4 months, the wear was negligible, so I can see me getting 4 or 5 winters out of the set. Overall, about 15% of the time during the 4 months, I would have been better with normal summer tyres (the occassional warm/dry day). About 30% of the time there wouldn't have been much difference between them (wet days, but not freezing), but the remaining 55% of the time I was far better off having the winter tyres fitted. Regarding other Mchelins, the recent Pilot Sport PS2s are very good tyres, and probably one of the best all round tyres for the Impreza during the summer months. Even Mike Wood from Prodrive recommended them above their usual Pirelli's! Some of their other "commuter type" tyres aren't so great though, as they are designed for long life. John
scientific steve Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 john many thanks for the info, think i'll have to get meself a set of these now as the 18's were coming off for winter anyway cheers steve

thefastone Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Nice one, never realised that there was that much of a differnce in the winter tyres...so might just go do the same as Ive noticed after Knockhill I'm in need of a set.... But I'll be going to Silletts tyres in Holland St (Aberdeen) as he's never done me wrong before now, and his prices tend to be ok! [y] I'd only take my bike there too when it was on the road... Edit: oh and the same michelans were as I remember CHEAPER than costco per tyre, although i dont know the diference after the 20% off.....
johns Posted November 15, 2006 Author Posted November 15, 2006 When I bought my last tyres (Michelin Pilot Sports), I got them through Blackcircles.com with SIDC discount (you need to phone up). Were fitted locally, and slightly cheaper than Costco (by about £2/tyre). The one good thing about Costco, is that you can walk around the store, watching plasma Tvs and eating all the free samples of food whilst waiting for your tyres to be fitted []
thefastone Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 I'll give you that mate, ony thing Is I'm not sure its possible to go round costcos without spending a silly amount™ of money... I know ive tried lots of times LOL []

HairyDJ Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 I thought about the michelins from costco - got my summer tyres 225/45ZR17 there and they are not bad, but not as good as the potenza RE050 that were on before. I've put winter tyres on my second wheel set, but went to blackcircles for some Toyo snow prox 952 and am really pleased with them so far. Some extra tyre noise on some surfaces, but very trustworthy so far on anything slippy. If you want blackcircles and can't get SIDC discount (they hadn't heard of us when I asked), then drop me a PM with your email - looks as if anyone that I point towards them gets a 5% discount code to use! Prices and range were better with mrtyres, but i don't want the hassle of tyres being delivered and then finding a fitting station - I went for the easy option and paid a little extra (just under £125 each).
craig mac Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 I personally run the Nokian WR tyres in the snow and they are great in every dept. Braking, grip, everthing really. Worth checking them out too folks[]
st3ph3n Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Last year I ran my balding Bridgestone RE050s. Magic fun. []
