Stunning Grp B video

Group B was a classification for rally cars in the 80s. They were ultra light purpose built prototypes that had performance that was mind blowing at the time, and still is. They only lasted a couple of years before the rules changed as it was deemed too dangerous.

Current rally cars are probably as quick due to other factors, but are much safer.

whats grp b and why is it banned?

Watch the video and the reason they were banned is at the end

At the end they were about 400 - 450hp, with torque to match, as opposed to the 300hp current WRC cars.  So in essence it was a bit like driving Wilky's car

Didn't realise at the time, but I was lucky enough to see these monsters in the mid 80's when we used to follow the RAC all over the country.

Group B was banned due to the above accident in Portugal when 3 spectators were killed and 13 injured. Also on the following rally one of the best drivers and his co-driver were killed in a fireball accident. At this point both Audi and Ford withdrew from rallying and Group B was banned from the end of the '86 season.

I've got loads of videos and DVD's from that era, and I'm sure it was Malcolm Wilson in the Metro 6R4 that came into service, the mechanics opened up the engine compartment (tailgate) and some fingers fell out, from an overenthusiastic spectator trying to touch the cars as they went past.

In another one the 550bhp Audi S1 could accelerate from 50mph to 75mph in just over 1 second. It also shows the same car pulling wheelies accelerating out of corners.

Modern WRC cars are indeed faster over a given stage due to far better tyres and electronics.

I've been lucky enough to have driven a 2001 WRC Subaru S7 a few years back, but a shot of an S1 would be even better. Anybody got one?

I'm sure I remember BBC coverage of the Portugese rally in 85/86 and they did a special stage at the Portugese grand prix circuit. I'm sure the commentator said that the Lancia S4 lapped the circuit in a time that would put it on the 2nd row of the F1 grid...

I believe it was 4th place on the grid, which would have been 2nd row.

It's absolutely insane to think that a car like that, complete with 2 people in it, was as quick as an F1 car.

I remember seeing them go through the Bellahouston Park in Glasgow

The stages through Bellahousten Park was for the Scottish Rally, probably about '86-87. The official rally start back then was in Blythswood Square outside the RSAC building.

The only time in the mid 80's that the RAC rally came so far north was Ingliston in '86.

Superb video.. some lovely cars n superb driving...

Real shame about the spectators but when you see them all standing on the track over a blind summit you have to think it was inevitable..

DR Motorsport got it spot on. GpB were built in limited numbers. 200 for first batch then 20 off evolution models. Hence the EVO tag. if you watch the cars bounce about you can see how poor the suspension was compared to a modern WRC. tyre technology and transmission systems make todays cars much faster even with half the hp.

I was at the Ingliston event and I have a few photos of that somewhere can't remember what year though. seems i am a bit older than Squirrel
