zeolite Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Out in the middle of the North sea and we are bracing ourselves for 15m waves. As I am on a semi-submersible this could get a bit bumpy. So take care out here guys and roll on Friday!

RA Dunk Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 i just came home the day and to say the chopper was all over the place is a f*****g understatement!!, we were getting thrown all over the place on the way in [:'(][:$], im sitting in my house again now so it was all worthwhile []
Gumball Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 hats off to you all. dangerous caper out there, everythings metal and hurrts and you have to fly in a metal bubble for 2 hours to get thre. hats off
dan_jess Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Stay safe! My dad is a rigging supervisor offshore and has told me some scary stories. He also helped with raising the Kursk which is pretty cool.
zeolite Posted November 1, 2006 Author Posted November 1, 2006 Well the big waves are past and I was rocked in my bed. the big bangs can still get a bit alarming though [] No damage on the 704 but I would imagine someone somewhere will be missing a part or two. Shaken but not stirred. Personally I reckon driving to work everyday is much more dangerous than working out here.
st3ph3n Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Is it really a 2 hour flight to get to the rigs?
RA Dunk Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Is it really a 2 hour flight to get to the rigs? it`s quite often longer than stephen, ive done up to three and a half before heading into the wind stopping for fuel on route and returning
duncan_stephen Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Yup. Like Dunc said. It can take almost 4 hours depending on weather and rig location. There are some that aren't too bad though. Captain field is only about 40 mins (Just north off Fraserburgh coast) and Alba aint that far either. Another strange experience is when you fly out there but cant see the rig for fog, and you have to try and drop down into the fog and hope to see the rig. [] Been there a couple times.
westtra Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 am just home today, was pretty wild yest. boys were sayin a fair few big waves hit the platform at half 9 to 10. Couldna have been that bad as never even woke up. Was worst chopper ride of my life today though. only an hour thank god.
Gumball Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 i remember coming back from the Ensco72 off Yarmouth in 2003, hogmanay. There was snow everywhere and it was wild. The wind wasnt that bad until the chopper got to teh rig then it started going crazy. As we took off the weather got to the point where we had to sit about 100feet off the north sea to be able to get back. Then a strange beep beep beep started and the chopper banked sharply to the left and dropped. I shat my pants and thought i was going to die on the spot. The rotors were icing over and the engine was failing or some shat. We got back to the beach and the crew had us all out to explain and declare an incident. I made the decision there and then that i was never ever going offshore again. 3 months later i went to the 101 in denmark lol
duncan_stephen Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 owt like that to make you realise your living. [] Must have enjoyed the first pint. []
jamie_wood Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Were en route to Rosyth from Stavanger just now. Weather is better than it was this morning, thats for sure! We only got three hours into out transit on Monday night when we had to turn round due to an unsafe structure on the deck after the weather took its toll. Spent three days in port getting extra fabrication work done. Woke up on Tuesday morning to find snow on the hills and a wind chill of minus something!!! All I can say is roll on Gulf of Mexico!!
