terzo neil Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I see it didn't take long for my name to get brought into this like.... [] Well I'm (along with another couple on this forum) at Lossiemouth, witch I'm sure is a bit far north for most of you guys... If your looking at Leuchars, thats more central, and more likley to get the turnout, and the runways are huge IIRC... and Yeah I suppoes that It wouldn't be out ot the quesrtion to ask, After all its positive publicity for the station, and for us... although theres a good chance that we could be told to GTF! Im sure tho, that if we were to do something like that then We couls perhaps persuade the RAF Police to get a speed gun out.... Either way if your stuck for ideas or for that matter, Airfields.... then PM me... [y] Right enough, I would like to have some high speed runs to see what she can do, without the added pressure of doing the quarter.... Dale. i was at lossiemouth with the scottish/highland speed championship on the sat/sun weekend, good laugh going down the runway at warp speed
Guest Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 id imagine leuchers will be a no no anyway for matters of security and iv also heard their is no air show next year due to the runway is re-surfaced!! oh and grant is right about the TMIC thing sustained 100+ can lead to boom due to air no longer going in the bonnet vent but it's your cars plus would be a great day but campbell town is fcuking miles away though!!

More so with the classic TMIC than newages....but it would be a good run to Campbell tho.
craig mac Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 what about the old usaf base at edzell ?whats going on with that these days? know they used it for a few track days and stuff but not seen or heard anything for a while It has something to do with the noise polution etc, that they have stopped doing stuff there or so i am told. They were requested to build some 10 foot embankment right round it to keep the noise in or something, and it was going to cost heaps of dosh, so AFAIK There will be no more Edzell days[:'(] Craig
braveheart Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Just a thought wot about Kirknewton or Turn house in Edinburgh dont know if thease have still got Runways tho.....

sti pretender Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 The licensed aerodrome only takes up the 0.25 miles with the other 2 miles belonging to the RAF. So plenty space to play.
col666 Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Theres also errol airfield between perth and dundee, mostly used for car boot sales these days but theres a runway in there somewhere! I havent been near the place in years so dont know what state its in, do any tayside bargain hunters know!?
col666 Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Who needs a runway when you have the Garve to Achnasheen road in wester ross?! possibly the fastest stretch of road in the country[] How about a SIDC Midnight Club, like those mad japs?!

thefastone Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 You know guys I wouldn't rule out Leuchars, or any RAF base for that matter... for example... We have 2 events coming up now, one is a motorcycle handling day thingy, ie making up a track... and the other... is runway runs... again with the bike club.... and the RAF police will be there with their speed gun.... Going to see if I can get myself along to that.... Mebbe see if i can bring a few freinds.... [] think its like the 15th Oct perhaps....?
RA Dunk Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 if they can do it for bikes surely they can do it for cars?
thefastone Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Thats my thought Dunc, although, like I said earlier, Lossie would be a little far out of the way for most People IMHO.... and Thus Leuchars, you'll prolly find thats your best bet.... Has there been any contact for this with any airfeild yet perchance, or are we still sounding out the idea....?

Col Travelled that road many many times @ MAC 10 as my Grandfather used to live in LochCarron Only worry there would be Deer (had a few near misses) and Sheep, especially with all the Abahdeen boys[] Great Great Road, Also the road from Garve to Aultbea that is a real good road too, few more twisties in that one[] Craig
st3ph3n Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 I've not made contact with any airfields as yet. Have posted a question to the VMAX organisers down south though. Still sounding out the idea a little bit. I'm sure this wouldn't just be a SIDC as we'd maybe be struggling for numbers.
za - sti Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Hi guys, I am from Campbeltown and it is the longest runway in Europe. I have been on it many years ago with a couple of local bike nuts and thats when it was still operational. This follows an idea I had for a Scottish SIDC day as it is something that the local enterprise company may support. I was thinking of combining this with a Sprint, or single stage tarmac events, 1/4 mile, figure 8, etc for even the locals to join in. On a good May weekend the location is splendid and the beach is next door if you need to know anything let me know za-sti
RA Dunk Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Hi guys, I am from Campbeltown and it is the longest runway in Europe. perfect [H] . I was thinking of combining this with a Sprint, or single stage tarmac events, 1/4 mile, figure 8, etc for even the locals to join in. that would also be a cracker of an idea , sort of like our own wee Scottish Scoobies shoot out [H] [H] [H] [H]
st3ph3n Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 Fair old trek for the day for everyone so might need some accommodation possible for a wee cheeky weekend next year. But sounds like it could be a good idea. Great run to and from it and then some fun whilst we're there.
RA Dunk Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 would be a fair treck for us ABZ lot, but would be totally worth in though, perhaps we could make it a two day thing sat and sun maybe even camp over night getting the barbies oot Sat) 1/4 mile drag followed by a couple of high speed runs Sun) handling course followed by something else, or maybe a whole day of handling then? would be an immense weekend though eitherway [H]
za - sti Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 accomodation wouldnt be a problem, there is a camp site about a mile away and plenty of B&Bs the problem will be the weather, choosing a weekend will be difficult but from experience May is usually the best month although we were in swimming at Machrihanish in July this year. cheers za

Col You wouldn't be "suggesting" or "Encouraging" speeding now would you Col? As I know you recommend bans for speeders!!!! [] []
gogsie Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Campletown sounds perfect and making it a weekend thing would be sound as a fair few would be traveling from a distance. Also help local businesses [Y] If we had the airstrip for the Saturday it would allow those staying over to be "Sociable" on the Saturday night then drive up the road later on the Sunday. Top idea St3ph3n (AKA Swampie)
johns Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Who needs a runway when you have the Garve to Achnasheen road in wester ross?! possibly the fastest stretch of road in the country[] Cracking stretch of road, though you must be aware that although remote, this road is monitored regularly by both marked and unmarked police cars out to catch people speeding. I picked up a few points on my licence a few years ago here, despite only being above the speed limit by a few mph. It was a Sunday morning, clear sunny day, hardly anything on the road, and I was at least a mile from the nearest building or house of any sort. Was caught via the time between two marked points on the road method by an unmarked car that was sneakily posing as a tourist car in one of the lay-bys.[:@] I had passed the marked car a few miles earlier (was visible for miles!) without issue. Runway options sound good, though you may want to check out any requirements for public liability insurance by some of the potential venues whilst speaking to them. Although the club has a PLI policy in place, it wouldn't cover events like this. John
st3ph3n Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 John, what would need to be done to arrange PLI cover for an event like this under the club's own policy, or is anything beyond the realms of show and shine outwith what we can cover? I'm going to try and get in touch with the VMAX people properly and see if they'd be up for hosting something north of the border because they obviously have all the gear too, and I imagine the policy stuff.
